I was NOT impressed…read more Visiting here made me feel depressed, like I was in a slowly deteriorating city with political leaders who lacked the motivation to keep this historic city beautiful, like the real gem that it is. However, I have also had several opportunities to visit this city over these last thirty years and I have seen great improvements since that time. One of the small efforts to beautify this city came with the decision to add several "Cleveland" script signs at various locations around the city, like here in the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland. I have visited a few of the Cleveland script signs, and this one here in Tremont is my favorite so far. It is located in a beautiful little neighborhood, within an area that almost feels like a small park. Even though it's in a beautiful little neighborhood, it is close enough to the heart of the city to provide visitors with a breathtaking view of the Cleveland skyline, along with several beautifully constructed historic bridges within view. To add to how pleasant this location is, there are also railroad tracks nearby, where one can occasionally see a powerful train pass by. Still further, there is also a nicely constructed walkway through this area where folks can take a nice stroll while enjoying the view. The Cleveland script sign here in Tremont is easy to get to, located just south of the Cuyahoga River, with nearby exits from both directions of the Interstate 90 freeway. There is also a nice, clean and safe place to park within walking distance that is open daily, from 6am until 11pm. This parking area has several parking spots, most of which are under the I-90 overpass, and parking is free. If you happen to be visiting the Cleveland area, I would highly recommend that you stop by this location for a quick visit. It's a great place to take in a breathtaking view of this beautiful city, and of course, to snap that selfie of your visit to Cleveland.

One of the best presidential mausoleums around I suspect. My wife and I ubered 12 minutes from…read moredowntown to reach Lakeview Cemetery on a beautiful June Saturday morning. The grounds here are very well maintained with this memorial towering over everything else. The two volunteers working inside shared lots of the details of the place along with meanings of the different architectural features and works. The mosaic floors and alcoves were impressive but the 10 ton marble statue of Garfield is certainly the highlight. Centered in a circular room on the main floor, he is well lit above and surrounded by stain glass windows depicting the original colonies on all sides. The details in the statue itself are impressive right down to the laces of his shoes. Take the circular staircase up a level for a birds eye view. You can also sneak a good peak of the downtown Cleveland skyline in the distance. Head back down two levels to the crypt and see Garfield's flag draped coffin alongside his wife's. Admission is free but there is a donation box to help maintain things. Our visit lasted about 15 minutes and was well worth the walk from the Mayfield gate. Just follow the white line on the road to the left to reach it.

We saw old steam locomotives, learned how they work, and that the machine shop is busy making parts no longer found. The American Freedom Train, after years of work (I saw it in sad shape in 2018) will take to the rails next year for the 250th birthday of the U.S.A. Passenger cars were sitting for restoration, some in working order. The black one on the turntable was lived on by a wealthy couple during Covid as they traveled safely. The car that we sat in was used in the movie "The Natural" and Robert Redford sat there. The "Death" Car filled with steam and killed everyone in it, and now has active ghosts. Cabooses are no longer due to automation. Only an engineer and a conductor ride each train. I need to find a group and go again. Look for open houses here. Not expensive. A deal with a Groupon.

While I admit that I didn't read the description enough, I thought this would mostly be a train ride. It wasn't. So this starts in a large machine shop shared with a business. There is many friendly volunteers to check people in. Then a tour guide takes you to first a caboose to walk through. Then comes the train ride. It was cool as it was vintage passenger car, but was only 15 minutes. After this, you tour various old style steam and diesel trains. This is great for kids to a point, some do get restless, but there is plenty to look at. Adults interested in mechanics and old trains will also love it. They also have ghost tours as the passenger car was the site to an accident that killed many people. This group is interesting because they are mostly volunteer and are working to retire very expensive machinary. They also had a blacksmith (my favorite part).

During my walk hours before checking out of my hotel, I was able to canvass the area while in search of a breakfast restaurant. The Fountain of Eternal Life is located in Veterans' Memorial Plaza (formerly Mall A), part of the Civic Center Mall in downtown Cleveland. This plaza is a large, open public space designed for pedestrians, making it a hub for walking, jogging, sitting, and gathering. I learned that the memorial is 46-foot-tall and honors Greater Clevelanders who died in military service from the Spanish American War through the Iraq War, symbolizing humanity's quest for peace and transcendence above conflict. Designed by Marshall Fredericks, a World War II veteran who had served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Air Force, was selected as the sculptor after a civic campaign led by the Cleveland Press raised a large amount in donations. The main statue is a 35-foot bronze figure of a man rising from flames toward peace, emerging from a bronze sphere symbolizing humanity's legend, with four granite carvings representing the world's major geographic civilizations. And it absolutely lived up to his hopes and dreams. Free parking. $18 for adults and $10 for kids grades k-12. It's a Gato-class submarine, on the smaller side as these things go, commissioned in 1943 and served seven war patrols in the Pacific. The only downside is it isn't exactly ADA compliant. If you can make it down the hatch, it's a self guided tour with lots of signs posted everywhere and several buttons that have audio information as well. All of it is fascinating, especially the size of the kitchen that prepared food for a crew of 97. We really enjoyed this experience and would definitely recommend it to other history buffs.
