I needed to change up the scenery a little bit without jeopardizing my health - see my review for Roosevelt Park in Edison and the lack of mask-wearers and people not practicing social distancing. The greenway has a main path that starts in Metuchen on Route 27 by the Whole Foods Market Plaza and stretches all the way to Fords right before the Parkway. I really liked this walk - the part that really got my heart rate up was going across the pedestrian bridge going over Route 1 in Edison. I came to the Greenway on Saturday and it was a hot one but the trail is covered with so many trees and greenery that the shade keeps you cool. I like how this is tucked away and not a lot of people come here. There were some people not wearing masks but because its not packed, they socially distanced themselves not like the crowd at Roosevelt. Just to reiterate this is a straight path from Metuchen to Fords with exits at various points (Main St, Metuchen, Herbert Hoover MS in Edison, Woodbridge Ave in Edison, etc.,). Check it out the next time you're looking for a new path!

This is a very interesting place to visit. You can take train from New York City or Philadelphia to get off at Metuchen Train Station and walk a few blocks to arrive the entrance while passing Whole Foods Supermarket where nice clean restrooms and fountain water and WiFi and sitting area are very handy. While everything is expensive here, banana and soy beans milk seem to be reasonable and good supply for a long walk through the park. At the entrances of the park, there are quite a few bikes that can be rented with app to unlock. Across street is Fulton Bank that has complimentary coffee water and lollipops and nice clerk to chat a bit. About one and half mile walk, you can pass the brand new Korean Supermarket Lotte At Raritan Shopping Center which has small food court. You also may find their Japanese Ice cream Mochi very delicious and easy to eat a box of 8 only $3.99 They also has nice clean restrooms and fountain water to fill your bottles. During lunch hours also has lots of free delicious tryout. After detour and back to Greenway Park, you may continue the walk or bike toward Woodbridge.

The Middlesex Greenway is a paved trail in Edison and Metuchen. It's 3.5 miles long and mostly flat except for a bridge that goes over Route 1. No grand vistas, but much better than a gym. And most importantly, local and convenient, so you don't need to drive (or I don't, anyway). I think most of the people who come here are from the immediate area. In the summer, it has the advantage of being about 70% under the shade, so you aren't under the sun all the time. Year-round, it's car-free road biking. The sign says the greenway is closed in the winter; however, it's been open when I've gone. I think they may close the gates when there's snow or ice on the ground. There are some comments in other reviews by people saying they are so glad it's not overcrowded. I think this trail is in no danger of being overcrowded. Have you seen Central Park? This park is at maybe 20% capacity. It could take on a lot more people. Might be safer that way. Just my opinion. On the Woodbridge end, it's a little creepy because you need to pass by a graveyard to get to the trailhead. Thankfully, I don't come in that way. I think for those coming from the East side, it may be more pleasant to park on and enter from one of the several side streets that connect directly with the greenway. If you familiarize yourself with the path, you'll see what they are. Rose, Greene, Liddle, and Wolfe Streets come to mind. At the other end, there's a small lot on Middlesex Avenue off Rte 27 (see below) DIRECTIONS FROM SOUTH: Take 27 North. Right after the part of 27 N where you have to make a left to stay on 27 (AFTER Walmart and the 287 junction, going from Edison to Metuchen) -- ordinarily you would follow the signs to make a left and then a right to stay on 27, but instead of making a RIGHT at that light to stay on 27, go LEFT. That is Middlesex Ave. The greenway entrance is immediately on the left.

Thomas Edison Park has its own parking lot (which has a lot of potholes), but if you're here to use one of the 16 tennis courts, parking in one of the MCC lots and walking through the chain-link fence gate is quicker. From dawn to dusk on weekdays, the gate leading to Rartian Center is open, which allows office employees to take walks in the park during lunchtime. The baseball, softball, and soccer fields are popular with locals on the weekends, as evidenced by the contents of nearby trash cans. The asphalt walkways are popular with the cheeky Canadian geese, who seem to enjoy deliberately defecating where people walk rather than on the grass. Metal benches and bleachers are strewn throughout the park, along with some wooden picnic tables by the parking lot. Interestingly, this park is the only one in Middlesex County designated as a "Model Airplane Field". Since the wide, open, unobstructed fields here lend themselves to being very windy, this park is also a good place to fly kites.

I am also so happy that Wheeler park welcomes everyone from all over NJ (and elsewhere). Coming from out of the county will cost you a bit more, but not much. If you live outside of Union County it is $4.00 for kids ($2.00 in county) and $6.00 for adults ($3.00 in county). This splash pad has every water feature a kid could ever need - from bigger twisty water slides, to a small dragon water slide. Also, water guns that you can shoot each other with, a pirate boat, water shooting up from the ground, and much more. My kids spent a little over 2 hours here and had an absolute blast. We've been here about 3 times and it never disappoints. Just be sure to bring some sort of shade covering. There isn't much cover at the splash pad so we usually bring our small beach tent with us. There is also a dry playground in the splash pad gated area where kids can play too. They have staff who help keep the kids safe and to make sure everyone goes down the water slides safe and sound. I highly recommend Wheeler Spray Park on a hot summer day.
