I love all the flowers and foliage in the summer that is at the park! They have a beautiful rose garden too across the street. When playing mini golf, the trees give good shade. It's nice to be in nature. There is playground equipment for the kids and duck shaped paddle boats that are cute for families to ride in. The staff are very polite too.

Lots to explore in this park! Walking trails, 3 ponds, dog friendly! Include the Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden- Over 3000 roses in full bloom! And water lilies pool. And surrounding Arboretum! Parking lots available.

A beautiful rose garden amidst a vast park. We came here to look at the flowers they have a bunch of different roses as well as a sensory and fragrance garden where you can smell various plants and flowers and feel them . The rose garden isn't big but very pleasant to stop and take some pics or sit down and relax .

I absolutely understand why they'd have a free 5K here every Saturday at 9! https://www.parkrun.us/delawareandraritancanal/course/ It's so dang beautiful! Long gravel trails, lots of fishers and bikers! Great place to walk your dogs!

Had a great time in this park. We were looking for a family friendly hike, and found this place online. The park was huge though, so we actually spent more time doing other stuff than we did hiking! We followed google maps directions, which took us to Parking Lot A. This is close to the Rose Gardens, but a bit further from everything else. If you want to hike, I'd recommend parking in B or C. We started with the Fitness Trail, which is more of a regular walk along a paved path that has various fitness stations along the way. My elder son attempted most of them. This brought us to a very large playground, which kept both boys occupied for a very long time, since it was huge and had a large variety. Eventually we got to the Nature Trail, which is what initially attracted us to the park. This was our least favorite, as there wasn't much scenery, nor nature. We gave up pretty quickly when it got muddy. There is a lot of green, and several BBQ's. Great park!!

" I remember Sunday morning..." Colonial Park located in Somerset County is one the the most complete parks that I have visited. I spent most of my time walking through the perennial, shrub, ornamental grass & rose gardens taking photographs but there is so much more to the park. Each section of the park has a designated letter which makes orientation to the various elements much easier. This community park offers bike/walking paved paths, hiking trails which turn muddy in spots, a 1.4 mile fitness course, bbq piths and picnicking tables. For the kids they feature miniature golf, paddle boats, a playground area, a mini-water park which were all closed down for COVID-19 when I went. Tennis courts, fishing ponds, baseball fields, large open grass fields, bocce courts, shuffle board area and a large fenced dog park. There are public rest rooms with flish toilets and running water. Parking is available at each section of the park but weekends can get crowded. It is difficult to find a park which is as large as Colonial Park offering such a variety of activities.

Great spot for quiet meditative time. Has a nice short nature walk, and little workout stations along the paved trail.

I am a photographer and have been shooting here for the last ten years. It's a beautiful location. Now all of a sudden it's not allowed. You get chased out by the mean man in the green golf cart. Yesterday i went there and there are big flashing signs no photography without a permit but a permit costs more money than a photo session costs! Maybe instead of chasing people away you can ask for a donation or something? Like i said I've been working here ten years, never a problem. It is a huge turn off and unfortunately now I will just go elsewhere as the permit thing just doesn't work for what people like me use it for. Very disappointed.

Quintessential park. Colonial is as good as parks get, in my opinion! I've been visiting Colonial for the past five years, and have done everything from playing mini golf, to training for a half marathon, to taking my nephew to the playground, to even shooting my engagement photos here. There really is something for everyone. There is paddle boating, mini golfing, a rose garden, an arboretum, and a ton of paths, sports fields, tennis courts, etc. The only thing I think is missing is a basketball court (maybe I am wrong, but I've never seen one there). Not a big deal to me personally but I could see some people assuming there would be one, and there is not. I work a few minutes away, so one of my favorite activities is to spend my lunch break in the park. I've attached a photo from my latest lunch break excursion. Reading on a blanket, under a tree, in a sunny field ... what a peaceful way to enhance your day.

What a great big spacious park. Many walking paths, with ponds, playground, paddle boats, fishing areas and many benches to sit and relax.

This garden is absolutely beautiful! My daughter and I really enjoyed the many roses there..it was so serene and blissful walking through the garden. They also have a paddle boat, playground, tennis court and mini golf course..oh yeah, bike/hike trail as well..it was definitely worth the drive and I'll definitely visit again!

Great place for the family and friends. The kids have their own play section with a mini water park. It has miniature golf and paddle boards. The rose garden is the greatest and they have weekly 5K fun runs only one your competing against is yourself!. All 5K runs are free. Just register at Delaware and Raritan canal park run

Lots of playground equipment, nicely kept up. A very nice splash pad for kids 3-8 years old. Mini golf. Just a gem in Somerset.

Ask the Community - Colonial Park

Does Colonial Park have basketball courts?

I haven't seen one there, and they don't list basketball as one of their many activities on their website. There are plenty of sports fields there, bocce ball courts, mini golf, tennis courts, etc. But no mention of basketball!

Love visiting Rutgers Gardens through the seasons! If you come in fall, don't expect much in bloom,…read morebut this place is wonderful to hike and stroll through with its various paths. If you visit in spring or summer, get ready for stunning flora and fauna that is cared for by Rutgers staff and students. I adore the lilacs that's smell delicious and envelope a walkway like a natural ceiling. So amazing! Also, I adore the wide open fields and spaces that lend themselves perfectly for a picnic or spot to lay down a blanket and enjoy a nap out in the open. PS. Very romantic spot- if you're coming here for a date, you will not be disappointed!

Really this should be a 4.5 but I rounded up to five to encourage people to come. Really worth it!…read more So let me tell you the negatives first, some of which were covered by some other reviewers. First, there are ticks and you should spray before you start. Second, the directions to get off Route 1 to the gardens is confusing, even for someone from New Jersey who is used to jug handles, but you'll get there eventually. Third, you can hear the traffic from route 1 as you walk through various parts of the gardens and the adjacent woods. And fourth, some toilets are in sad shape. To me, no showstoppers but more you should be aware. Best thing is to print out a map of Rutgers Gardens and Helyar Woods first. It's good to have with you as you walk about although signs are about. This is a really a beautiful garden set out in a very approachable way. Well documented and you can use those maps so you can find and explore the Asian Hill garden, Holly Collection, the Succulent Gardens and, my favorite, the Bamboo Grove. All in all there are 23 gardens and 8 structures, most of which are research sites. The gardens are adjacent to the Helyar Woods. The woods has 7 viewpoint spots and 5 marked trails ranging in length from 0.4 MI to 1.6 MI. Within the forest is a forested wetland, a meadows, a pine grove and just plain old Forest. Most of the trees are old-growth beech, birch, maple and oak trees. It's really wonderful. Note the gardens are closed on Mondays.
