Micon breeder Connie has at least 3 litters or more per month. The females if they ever get out of the kennel are unsocialized with their teats hanging to the ground. It took a while yet I was able to reverse some of the damage done by lack of time, socialization by the breeder. No one should have that many litters in a months time. The males used at stud frequently die in the kennel. The female I adopted at age 6 got pyrometria, lost her litter of 3 or she too would have died in the kennel only luckily for her she no longer had any value $$$ for Connie. It's a shame for the breed and the dogs stuck in the kennel. After that experience I adopted from rescue groups to avoid dealing directly with greed driven breeders. The AKC doesn't care as they make money off Micon litters as well as entry fees for the dogs they show. I'd suggest avoiding Connie, her granddaughter if you want a chance at getting a healthy, sound dog as I have with my current, previous rescue dogs. read more

This breeder is just a puppy mill. I bought Angel a 7 year old lab last June 2021. I took her to the vet because she had such bad breath. This is when I noticed how bad her teeth were even though this breeder said she has recently had them cleaned. The vet told me she would need a cleaning and extraction and gave me a price of $1500 - $2400. This was back in July. She is now at the San Francisco SPCA in dental surgery. The vet just called and said she will probably need most to all of teeth extracted. Which means the cost will be $2400+. Not to mention she will be in pain and may need a second surgery because there is so much damage. I have had many Labs, (not from this breeder) in the past, and they have never had even 1 tooth extracted. This is so irresponsible. I am not a complainer, but when it comes to a dog I have fallen in love with I want to warn others of this breeder's lack of care and honesty. read more

I'll start with saying that the dog that we got from Micon's was the best dog in the entire world, which makes what I'm about to say so much more difficult. We had to have our 2 year old chocolate lab put to sleep, due to a genetic disorder, Copper Toxicosis. After much research and contact with my vet, this happens in Labradors, but it is avoidable! Our pup was from Ammo (dad) and Sierra (mom). There IS testing for this copper Toxicosis and when contacting the breeder, she was just now testing the female, after breeding her, which to me is not ok or right. Come to find out, the mother is affected (carried both genes), and the father is a carrier (carrying one gene). When you breed the two, you get some pups that will also be affected and carriers. Our lab began to throw up, and very soon showed signs of jaundice. He spent a week at the animal hospital and eventually succumbed to the copper Toxicosis, which is genetic. He was only 2 years old. I'm not sure if the breeder was just negligent or what but I don't think it's right to continue to breed the female that is affected and will pass that down to the pups. I wanted others to be aware of this and that is why I'm posting this review. Also, they "require" to you give your dogs a multivitamin "NuVet" and if you don't they void their guarantee of their dogs health. Which again, is not right, that part is all about money and only money! They require you to give your dogs these vitamins which are completely unnecessary with a good quality puppy food, but again, it's just for the money. read more

I'm going tomorrow to pick up my second dog from Micons and can't wait to have another great family dog. Repeat business is the best referral I can give but here's my story: I bought a yellow lab from Micons in 2000. She lived to be just shy of 12, a good age for a lab. She had some medical problems but not until a few years before her death and nothing unexpected for an aging dog. My dog was the best lab we've ever had. I grew up with labs and my family has had 5 total so we know labs. Even my parents say our Micons lab was the best one in terms of temperament and intelligence and she looked like a puppy until the day she died. Regarding the breeders and their treatment of the dogs: my recollection is that the grounds and house are clean and well maintained. I also recall that the puppies are brought into the home which I don't think breeders usually do. I have a preview of the pup we're getting tomorrow and it's clear she is clean and the photo was taken in the home. I get that can be a misrepresentation but this photo wasn't a great shot - slightly fuzzy. If they were trying to "sell" the dog it would have been a much better quality photo and staged. My impression is that they were playing with the pup and decided she was too cute not to take a photo of. I would recommend Micons to anyone looking for a purebred lab. read more

My husband and I are appalled by the conditions Micon's labs are kept in. We asked to see the parents of the lab puppies and were shown two barns FULL of adult dogs. It was hot, smelled terrible and the barking was overwhelming. It was one of the saddest things I have ever seen. There is NO way the owners of this place are able to take care of new born pups from their aussie and lab litters when they have 30+ adult dogs to care for. In addition to having new pups (both aussie and lab litters at the same time) and two barns full of caged, adult labs they also have horses, cats, a bird and acres of land. How is it possible to care for all of this when there is just two of them...it is not. Please do not buy from here. read more

Unethical breeding practices? We purchased a beautiful white pup from Micons labs in Aug. 2009. He was magnificent! But in January, 2010 he was diagnosed by an orthopedic surgeon with severe dysplasias and advanced arthritis in both elbows. The vet said it was by far the worst case of dysplasia he'd ever seen; especially in a puppy just 6 months old. Consistent with their contract, Micons gave us only half our money back and said they would never breed those two dogs together again. But sure enough, we saw an ad on Micons website for pups out of the same match in early June, 2010. That's only 8-9 months since the previous breeding. (see the previous post.) So by early February, 2010 Micons KNEW there was a genetic problem in breeding those two dogs and bred them anyway! Aside from the dysplasia and arthritis in both his elbows, the dog had a subsequent ACL injury in his right knee, and so we know he had a 70-80% statistical chance the left will go as well. Is Micons an ethical breeder or something else? You be the judge. read more

I would strongly suggest NOT to get your puppy here. This business is a puppy mill! I researched Micons on the web and thought she was good from what I was reading. I put a 200$ Deposit down to hold a pup. We then went to her facility to look at all the dogs. Boy was I disappointed! It was just her and her husband with a bunch of dogs! To many for two older people to handle. We walked into we're she kept most of her dogs. The barn had such a bad stench of pee. It was awful. All the male dog were all out of control in there pens, like they haven't been out for a while. The female dogs had no emotion, like they've been pregnant to many times. There eyes looked so sad. That's what made me choose a different breeder and loose my 200$. I'm not comfortable knowing that my puppy came from what I think is a puppy mill. Late last year I purchased a lab from Micons. She is a great dog but I just noticed on their website that the mother of my pup is due to have another liter later this month. This is over breeding. The purpose of dog breeding is to make the breed stronger and healthier for the following generation, not to make money. I have always been told that you should never breed a female more than once a year and not more than 3-4 times in their life time. It seems that Micons does not give their girls a rest. They always seem to have litters and pups for sale. read more

Do NOT buy from this breeder! Connie sold me a male golden Labrador but failed to inform me that the mother had to be put down due to her allergies. Needless to say, I had to put my best friend down yesterday at the age of 8 years old. I would never trust a breeder that would hide such important information about a family member. I purchased a puppy back in 2005. Shortly after my labs 2nd birthday she started acting funny. I took her to Davis and after 2 weeks of testing they found a severe case of angiosarcoma, which they told me they had not seen in such a young dog. She only lived for three more weeks after that. I found out later, after researching, that Micons breeds their dogs into their "teens". This is cruel to keep breeding one litter after another and extremely hard on the mother. They should be retired after no more than 3 litters and before they hit 6 or 7. This also makes the puppies more susceptible to disease and other issues. I never did find out how old my labs mother was but I can only imagine she was way too old. At the time I called them in to the AKC to investigate, not sure what happened with that. DO NOT PURCHASE PUPS FROM MICONS. They breed cruelty. read more

We bought a Fox Red Lab in August of 2009 from Micon and within 9 months we noticed a limp. We took the puppy to the vet and was told it might be due to an injury while playing...take some meds and get back to them in a few weeks if it doesn't go away. Two weeks went by and the limp still existed. Return visit to the vet and multiple x-rays were taken and sent off for reading. They came back with both elbows have dysplasia. So, now we're trying to figure out a medicine that will mask the pain associated with this diagnosis. I contacted Connie to let her know the issue and she did honor the agreement and offered another puppy, but I don't have the space or desire to have another...we only wanted one dog. Piper is the most even tempered dog I have ever seen and we enjoy her beyond words, but it is so sad that at 9 months she has this joint issue. Reading these posts I guess we should have been more selective when we were searching for a breeder because it seems Micon has a long history of bad joints. Micon was fine when we went to visit, it didn't smell and the dogs all seemed happy. I think we should have just done more research before committing to buy. There seems to be an awful amount of bad reviews for Micon. By the way, Connie requires you to purchase these supplements for two years in order for her to honor the contract. It's a pyramid scheme...just know what you're getting into (she gets $ when people purchase the supplements using her number). Another friend bought from Micon a few moths before us and has recently had the same experience regarding joint issues. Please, Please research before making a decision. read more

We have an 8 month old fox red puppy, Ruby, from Micons Labs. We've had labs in the past and when we decided to get another dog, it really had to be a lab. This puppy is happy, healthy, smart, and absolutely gorgeous. She's been very easy to train. Ruby gets along with everyone and everything, and we're really glad she's here. They've been breeding dogs since forever at Micons and know their dogs well. They have, and breed, a lot of dogs. It seems like they pay a lot of attention to the characteristics of the dogs they're matching. I called Connie once to tell her how delighted we are with Ruby. She asked which dogs were her parents. She immediately knew the dogs and was glad that the dad's temperament had come through. I spent weeks checking out breeders online before choosing Micons. Genetic testing for eye and joint problems was important to us because of our experience with one of our other (non Micon) labs. Connie has a wealth of information that she's willing to share. I would go to Micons again if we wanted another pup. read more

We are on our third lab from micons. They have all been extremely healthy. Connie's breeding practices are fine and her property does not smell. Our first lab from micons lived to 14 and our second to 13. Our current lab is 1 year and we are following the vets orders not to have her run long distances and keeping her weight down. We don't usually get our pets from breeders, just rescues, but were in the area and decided to stop by (mostly so I can play with the cute doggies :)) and were completely appalled to discover this horrible breeder. The elderly couple who owns the dogs, has close to 30 of them in their barn, all in cages and the stench is absolutely unbearable! I won't go into all the details, but it did not look like any of the dogs were well taken care of and since then, I have heard horror stories from people who did end up getting their puppies. Can you guys tell me what the names of the parents were for your puppies from Micon. We are due to pick up a puppy on Sunday but haven't put down any money yet. Also if the parents have health clearances aren't the chances pretty slim that the puppies won't have problems. I got my first white lab 2 and a half years ago from a different breeder. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma shortly before her 2nd birthday. No history of cancer in any of this breeders dogs. We lost our girl 6 months later. I also have a choc. Lab who is 7 that I got from a backyard breeder, no registration, no health clearances on the parents and no guarantees. She has been the healthiest dog I've ever owned. read more

I have known Mike and Connie for years and have been in, out, and around their ranch and I can personally tell you that in no way are the dogs mistreated. They are treated like royalty compared to every kennel I have been too as a veterinary technician assisting my boss perform exams, pregnancy check- ups, and vaccinate. We have multiple clients at work whom own Micon's labradors and not one has ever had a serious medical issue caused by birth and are all very even tempered family or hunting dogs. At Micon's, each dog's kennel is cleaned twice a day with new shavings and water every morning. In the warmer months they have an industrial size fan that constantly blows air throughout and play in the hose to keep cool. In the colder months they have a large heater in the barn. Each dog gets time daily in a large play area with other kennel mates, they are always provided shade, water, and toys. Micon's has multiple padded and carpeted areas in the house for bitches to whelp safely and they are always under a watchful eye. Every dog has hip and eye clearances by a licensed veterinarian. Mike and Connie have always taken pride in their dogs and their ranch. I always recommend Micon's to clients at work and will continue to do so for many years to come. read more

I totally agree with Cheryl S. and can certainly sympathize with Geoffrey S. I to purchased a beautiful white pup from Micons that within 3 years was almost debilitated with both knees (ACL's) blown and severe arthritis in both elbows. We ended up having one knee replaced to the tune of $3,500 waiting until we could afford to do the other one. It was during that waiting period that the elbows got so severe that he could hardly walk. He was the best dog ever and I mean ever! Sad to say that before his 4th birthday the vet recommended putting him down because it was not a quality of life for him. Saddest day of our lives, truly! Labs are not suppose to live just 3 1/2 years, not right! Just wanted to share our story so people just do research about breeders or over breeders before they bring home a family member that may or may not be healthy. It's the saddest thing in the world to go through and I would not wish that on anybody. read more

I have purchased 2 puppies from this breeder. One was a yellow lab puppy and the other was a black puppy. The yellow lab puppy was the best puppy that I have ever had. She was so sweet and playful, I loved her so much. So after that first great experience I went back 8 years later with my then boyfriend and we purchased another puppy thinking that we would have the same experience as before. Boy were we wrong. We purchased the black female puppy and was told that the liter was an accident and the 2 dogs weren't supposed to be bred together. Regardless of this fact we were told that both parents were healthy and there shouldnt be any issues with this liter of puppies. So we went ahead with it and bought the puppy. She was fine for the first year, than the health problems started. And it all went downhill from there. Eventually the puppy passed and it was heartbreaking. I would not send anyone to this breeder ever again. There doesnt seem to be any care for the puppies after the money is exchanged. Its disgusting! read more

in regards to the post dated 7/6/10 from geoffrey. i had purchased 3 dogs from micons. the first one died in an accident so i went back due to heart ache and bought another one in 2005. approx 8months old i noticed the dog was having problems walking, i took the dog to the vet and he told me for a dog so young she had a severe case advanced arthritis again in both elbows. when i contacted micons they said its from the puppy going up and down to many stairs....not true. They would not refund my money or take the dog back although they did offer me another dog...what am i going to do with another dog, its not like you can just throw them away. So I decided to me my puppy. Before all this started I referred a friend to micons, long story short this dog had xrays due to problems unable to get up from a sitting position. she was 2yrs at the time in 2006. The vet said again it was one of the worst cases of hip dysplasia for such a young dog. I contacted micon on my friends behalf, they said the same thing "oh we wont breed that combinsation again", although they have. Micons again offered my friend another pup and said they did not want the other dog back. what do you do with a dog that has become a part of the family, Micon is banking on this. My friend did not take the dog because he did not want another defective dog....you dont know anything is wrong with it until its to late. I would not advise anyone to buy a dog from them because there is a high chance they dog has some form of dysplasia or arthritis because they keep breading the same dogs over again with disregard to healthy animals. read more
