Supports MAGA. I've been shopping at Mickey's since I was a Cub Scout. 35 years or so. Have purchased everything under the sun there: socks, boots, clothing, camping gear. On my most recent visit, however, I was dismayed to see MAGA hats on the shelf, and the owner walking around with a big Trump patch sewn to his vest. For a store that claims to support the police and military--who serve everyone equally--Mickey's sure has a funny way of showing it. Sorry, Mickey's, but I have many LGBTQ+ friends, as well as friends who aren't yet US Citizens. I also speak Spanish and have a vested interest in treating everyone kindly. I forgot how cool of a store Mickey's is, but was reminded on my visit this weekend. It was a fairly frequent stop in my teen years and early twenties, but I don't think I had visited since 1986. That last visit was to completely outfit a buddy and I for a hitch-hiking / camping adventure across Canada's Yukon and into Alaska. Tent, sleeping bags, cooking utensils, hatchets, hiking boots, tarps, insulated clothing... everything to keep 2 foolhardy Midwesterners alive for an October trek of a lifetime. Thank you Mickey's, we couldn't have done it without you! Even though Mickey's carries everything an outdoorsman would ever need, it's so much more. Tons of work clothes, military collectables, swords, biker gear... you will truly be amazed at the selection and variety and I guarantee you won't leave without a purchase. This visit I bought a stylish plaid cap and a bunch of carpet tiles, while my wife went silly and bought some Bear feet slippers and a one piece winter pajama. A longtime KC institution that every Kansas Citian deserves/needs to visit. Five stars for longevity and selection alone. read more

Mickey's Surplus has me shouting things like "Yo, Joe!" and "Knowing is half the battle!" GI Joe references aside, this place will rock your world if you dig military threads or urban and mechanical styled accessories like bags, pouches, cases, etc. Stores like Mickey's give me a great thrill. It's truly amazing what you'll find, especially from a fashion standpoint. I was going nuts over utility themed sweaters and rain-wear. If you really pay attention, you can see where many designers get their inspiration for their lines that grace the catwalk. You'll also find a plethora of backpacks from Condoor and role-specific equipment like shoulder bags, paratrooper packs, duffles, etc. Other gear like medic bags, gas masks, and Kevlar helmets can be had if you have the need or want to go rogue for a costume. I found this small tool bag that to me seemed like a perfect idea for a toiletry bag. The construction was so good it put those you'll find at your nearest mall to shame. What would one do with a US Domestic Mail 860 lb. mail bag? Laundry sack - that's what. It's white exterior and black lettering, ample size, and rugged drawstring make it a must for a alternative and modern take on holding those dirty clothes. That's just my take, but if you're like me, you'll probably start to see each item in a new way and its potential for "alternative uses." Go wild and and don't forget you'll find an assortment of hunting and outdoor gear as well. Mickey's is the coolest! I like this store so much because it's like a non-pretentious and way more badass Dick's Sporting Goods. Minus the basketballs and such. They have a great selection of clothing, obviously military or work-related. They have a ton of work boots and shoes. Oh and they have knives, helmets, motorcycle riding gear, camping supplies, hunting supplies, airsoft guns, and ARMY WIFE thongs. Dog tags made while you wait! Shopping here is always a fun experience and makes me feel like a little kid. Oooo what's that? A Kershaw pocket knife? Yes I'll play with it! Here's a cool little secret - Mickey's has super cheap and decent quality nursing scrubs. You can get a top and bottom for around $30 and although they aren't as high quality as Grey's Anatomy scrubs they fit a million times better than the cheapos available at Walmart. read more

I went back recently to help someone with a Halloween costume. I hadn't been in this store since I was 15. Back then my dad was buying thermal underwear? Just stand in one spot and you will see a million things. Military is the main theme, but there are also work boots, fur hats, knives and a weird basket of fur animal pelts. I hope they are not cats. I'm looking around the city for places to find the pieces to put together my boyfriends Halloween costume. I came to Mickey's in search of some leather combat style military pants or whatever for his costume, so someone recommended me here from a nearby costume shop I visited. I enter the establishment which is a really great size with lots of inventory. Awesome, I'm sure I'll find what I need, right? There's a handful of folks up front talking as I enter; I assume it's the chatter of clerks busy checking out customers, so I received no greeting or inquiry to help identify for what I came in looking for. Fine. Now mind you, we're not really the outdoorsy, camping type or any military/veteran, that would regularly find useful items in here, so I had no clue where to look inside the store. They had a huge selection which was great if you're in the market for this kind of stuff. I wandered around a while unable to find what I was looking for, so I return to the front asking for help and the same group of people that were up front when I entered, basically just shrugged and pointed me back off in a direction, again without really engaging with me to offer help in finding what I was in search for. Can't say they were ruuude, but no one cared enough to actually help me. It was evident I'm not the type to usually shop there, which means I must've been recommended and come in for something specific, and they should've made a greater effort to help me get that specific item. Sales. Conversion. Customer service. Easy. I work customer service and the afternoon carelessness of the staff just pushed me to take my search elsewhere. read more

Rolling through The Argentine, you'll notice Mickey's seems like the only building within 4 blocks that's not a Mexican restaurant. To me, this just means I have many options to see who has the best Margarita before another drunken sortie through the dense jungle of military surplus (at value prices) that is Mickey's. If it wouldn't look like I was some kind of crackpot, I'd buy all my stuff at Mickey's. Last time I was there, I went in with the MAIN purpose being to pick up a winter coat (a dashing p-coat, as a matter of fact), but almost walked out with 800 ration kits, a Norwegian Army-issue cliffside latrine, a gross of wool neckwarmers, and a samaurai sword. All because when I see that kinda shit, I revert back to a 12 year old playing war with my friends in the vacant lots up the street. "But, I may NEED this!". No, it's just the liquor and mid-life crisis talkin'. I actually HAVE found stuff I DO need (cold-weather gear, tool-bags, storage boxes, motorcycle gloves, etc) that are way cheaper, way sturdier, and way cooler than anything I could find at any standard retail establishment. Plus: reusing shit! Yes, that's a good thing. The staff is awesome, helpful, and friendly, just the type of characters you'd imagine should be running the show there. And, indeed, part of the fun is just striking up a conversation with any of the characters that shop there as well, as they're all there for the same reason: the cool stuff they can find to make them even more of a character. Anyhow, to quote Bill Murray in "Stripes" when commenting on his Army Greens: "Chicks in New York are paying top-dollar for this garbage!" Everything you'd expect and want in a military surplus store, and then some. Off the top of my head, here's a few things you can find at Mickeys: Gun cleaning kits cheaper than Dick's or Cabela's sells them. BDUs and boonie hats in just about any kind of camouflage you'd want. Work boots. Motorcycle gloves, helmets, and face masks. Warm, thick socks. Fishing gear. Paracord just about as cheap as you'd find it online ($8 for 100 feet). Pocket knives, from the $10 Chinese ones to higher-end offerings by brands like Kershaw. Dog tags made on a cool stamping typewriter machine. All manner of patches, pins, and other military insignia. Camping equipment (tents, stoves, pans, everything). Bags of all shape and size. Chest rigs and plate carriers. Airsoft. A ghillie suit. In all it's a good mix of actual surplus (check out the coats, last time I was there I saw an Eastern European presidential guard coat) and new items made to military specification by brands like Propper, as well as "military-ish" stuff like Condor range bags. Not everything is a deal, but a lot of it is. The store has a genial and fun atmosphere - the folks that work there are nice and despite its location in a windowless building with bars on the door it is not creepy by any means. If you're in the market for anything outdoorsy or vaguely military-related, Mickey's is a good choice. read more

Came here in search of a PEA Coat as recommended by my friend who is military. Staff was friendly and the selection of coats I had to choose from was pretty staggering. Multiple brands and every size you could imagine, including one to fit my gargantuan frame perfectly. The best part? 1/3 the price of somewhere you might find a PEA Coat on the Plaza. Will return, though hopefully not too soon as I want this coat to last a long time! read more

I gotta say I found everything I wanted. They have boots, and carhardt, and hunting, and camping, and army, and patches and pins.... Everything the working man needs. They don't have a huge selection for women, but they have every size available, so I'm sure you can find something close. I got the coolest keychain too that is going to take alot less room in my purse. They also sell kids stuff. Every few aisles you see miniature boots, or carhardts, or long johns. I wouldn't let them lose in the store, even if all the knives and sharp bits are behind glass. But then I don't like to let my husband lose in the store either.... for other reasons. (grin) Sometimes these guys get dinged for lack of service, but I had several people offer to help me. I'm guessing they heard the complaints and are acting on them. Just for a little jaunt, we went to Mickey's Surplus one Saturday afternoon, and it was interesting, even for a gal who grew up in a rural area where half your neighbors owned half this stuff. I wouldn't consider this a bargain store at all, but it's all in one easy place. If I ever want to get my Dad a Vietnam Vet or Purple Heart bumper sticker or pin, they do have a nice selection to honor military veterans. They also have plenty of camping gear, and probably survivalist gear as well (such as gas masks, etc). They were knife selections, as well as interesting hats, Dickies overalls, boots, scrubs, motorcyclist stuff, camping gear and more. Not one thing in here I could ever see myself using (unless they had a phone book of hotels to call for reservations), but interesting nonetheless. The suit of Armor, the NASA space suit, and the outfit for dressing like a giant bush were interesting to look at as well. It's in the Argentine area of KCK, and pretty easy to find and get to. I bet the 2 nearby Mexican places would be good to eat at. read more

They have much more than your average surplus store including cheap dickie's work pants, dickie's school uniforms, military memorabilia, funny hats, camping gear, and doomsday prepping equipment. Most everything is reasonably priced, spare a few bizarre things (flame retardant body suits?). The staff is always helpful with all of my odd questions. My only complaint is not on the store itself, but the location. I get lost nearly EVERY time I go out there. haha. read more

Mickey's used to carry CAMPING gear too, but now the selection is poor and the quality is on par with Wally world. I want to support local businesses, but the vibe is just sketchy. Not only that, they happen to carry my favorite style of Levi's on the cheap for what people "shell" out $55 bucks for. Then there's the other random stuff. You can actually buy all your pot leaf rasta wallets, nazi and USSR war medals, Mexican flag boxing gloves, confederate flags and gadsden flag (don't tread on me) merch all in one place! I get all my knives, Doc Martens, Dickies and Alpha flight jackets from here. This place is a ton fun. read more

Everything. The store is pretty large and there's so much stuff to see you'll need plenty of time. One year i dressed as a cop for Halloween and was able to get everything I needed at Mickey's. This store is just fun. And the staff is very resourceful. Cool place. The prices are a bit higher, but just a tad. I rather contribute my money to Mickeys than walmart though. But if you go deeper into the store will will find some awesome leather boots, even Harley's at good prices. Camping gear, tents, cooking supplies, sleeping bags ... I love this place! I've been going here since I was a kid. I went last weekend to get some Carhartt t-shirts. They have the best prices in town. I ended up buying an FAK that I can attach to a backpack I bought there last summer for my trip to Europe. If I have free time on the weekend, this is my favorite place to take a stroll through. Great if you're buying, terrible if you're trading. They have literally everything. I've purchased quite a bit there when I was processing out of the military and had to find replacements for things that had gotten lost or ruined. Between the military products, camping gear, and odds and ends - there's something for everyone. But if you're looking to trade in any of your military gear to make a buck you're better off going elsewhere. You won't get a tenth of what the stuff is worth. They're pretty open about it, and they usually direct you to try and sell it somewhere else. read more

I used to love going to Mickeys because of their extensive inventory and have been doing so for MANY years. As of today, I will never be going back. Found a rack of polar fleece extreme cold bibs for $9.99, previous $29.99. Found a pair of medium and was very happy to buy. At check out the woman running the register asked a man behind the counter of which price to charge. I hadn't even noticed that there was two pricing on the hanger. He told her to charge me the $29.99. I stopped her and said I got off the racking that said 9.99 the man jumped in and said someone must had put them on the racked with 9.99 pricing for only XL. I said that was wrong for charging me extra for even a smaller size and it was the only one. I know in retail they have different ways of clearing slow selling inventory but this was ridiculous. I finally said to forget the sale. While my husband was paying for his purchases, I went and pulled the sign off the rack that did NOT specify only one size that applied to the 9.99. Took it to the register and said you might want to correct your sign. The man was an AHole and was very condescending when I said he had lost my business. Well Mickey's, suck this. Found new pair on eBay and even with shipping was less that 9.99. Found a few more in the 12.00 range on Amazon. Lessons to be learned here; the internet is very price competition; however, bad customer service can hurt your business even more. read more
