Yuki the manicurist uses Soft Leaf gel which causes nails that have any real length to break. She did gel extensions for me and the nails started to break after the second week. The nails didn't have a chance to grow back because every time they were done the nails would break within one or two weeks. Yuki refused to use any hard gel on nails to protect them. Her prices are just as high as in NYC. She doesn't talk much and has no personality even though she speaks English which makes it more difficult to know if she understands what I have said to her. I would never return to this manicurist. read more

I guess this is the worst hair cut I have ever had in my life by Izumi. I paid for almost $150 for a hair that looks like an old market lady with no layers and dog bitten ends. All I did was to ask her to trim my hair but even her trimming skill was so poor which completely ruined my original style. With such a botch job, it barely worth $15 in some papa mama haircut salon down the street. It ruined my day and now I have to wait until my hair grow back a few inches before I can go to a different salon for fixing. read more

6/7/14 I have come across Michi Beauty Salon once again! :) This time I had Yuki as my nail technician. If you sit at her station you would notice that there are 2 calgel uv lights, that would mean that you can actually simultaneously put you hands instead of one light! :) Also, her station includes cabinets filled with all the essential materials necessary for the purpose of calgel. :D Additionally when taking care of your nails please note that when the gel is immersed in water they(your natural nails) will become rather weak. :OO I presume Yuki is the manager, the way she files the customer's nails is immaculate, I must say! :) She is a perfectionist(a very good trait), I admire her hard work and dedication!!!! :) After all, she has 10 years of experience on calgel so it goes without saying that she is a true professional!! :) read more

Yuki is the best nail artist I have ever had. She is a true artist taking passion in her work. I have had my nails done in NYC, LA, Nashville, and many many other spots across the US. Her attention to detail is unparalleled and for the price, I cannot find a better value anywhere. It's simply astounding. I asked for candy cane stripes painted on my nails for the holidays and she delivered painting each finger by hand meticulously. read more

Update: The Calgel nails lasted for 4 weeks with no peeling or cracked fingernails. I also need to mention that they were subjected to complete abuse during this time - hours in the pool, days at the beach, even painting(!) and they held up wonderfully. They were extremely easy to remove too, soaked in regular nail polish remover and the Calgel peeled right off. I was happy to discover strong, healthy nails underneath too. No ugly peeling or weak nails like you would find after a regular gel manicure or acrylics. Yuki, Calgel, you are my nail angels! read more

Going to Yuki for a cal gel manicure is like going to a top specialist. She pays attention to the details and takes her time focusing on each job. I never feel rushed the way normal salons feel. I'm already on my 2nd manicure and I'm loving it more and more each time I go! Since this is my first gel experience, she really helped guide me through possible designs. I would throw ideas out there and she would put it together. The finished product is always better than I imagined. My first manicure lasted 5 weeks. It probably could have lasted longer but I was eager to get a new design. Her work station is spotless. Everything is very clean and organized. Definitely call ahead for an appointment. Yuki is the only one working on nails so it's important to get on her schedule. read more

I have been going to Michi Beauty Salon since I was 5 years old. The stylists have changed over the years, but my go-to stylist is Erica. She is incredibly detailed, pays attention to what you want, and goes above and beyond. Last year, I chopped nearly a foot of my hair after years of long, shapeless hair. I finally went super short but I knew exactly what I wanted. I showed Erica a dozen photos of hair styles from different angles and she inspected them carefully, hearing my concerns about length and texture. She was super thorough from start to finish, conferring with me throughout the haircut, making sure I was comfortable. Erica is the most attentive hair stylist I have ever met. She'll make you feel special and at ease from the moment you walk through the door. read more

I'm new to the area and I chose to make an appointment at Michi over other salons, because the other salons in the neighborhood came off as stuck up and catty. When I stopped by Michi during my reconnaissance to check out the neighborhood salons they were the nicest, friendliest, and the stylists looked impressive. The salon was clean, bright and very comfortable. Customer service is more important to me than going to a drama filled night club esque salon were everyone dresses like hoes trying to one up each other. Kay sat me in the chair to give me a consultation, and then gave me a thorough and relaxing shampoo experience. As part of the shampoo, she gave me a wonderful head massage! I explained to her that I love my long hair, and do not want it short at all. She listened to me and gave me the most precise and beautiful cut. ( Lots of layers and bouncy blow out). I have long thick hair and by the end of my blow out I looked and felt exactly like a Victorias Secret Model. She even gave me a neck and back massage after the blow out! I am so very pleased with my first experience at Michi and I am so happy that I came here. I'll def be back in 2-3 months for my follow up hair cut, and maybe get highlights. I'm def gonna try the calgel mani maybe in like 2 weeks. I totally recommend Michi! (My mom and aunt are both hair dressers so if anyone would know hair its me!) read more

It's a modest salon tucked away on the 2nd floor in Mitsuwa marketplace. Shin my stylist was low key and friendly. I showed him a picture of how my hair is normally done and let him do his thing. His work is very detailed and precise and he gave me what I wanted. The cut came to $60. Everyone in the salon is kind and professional. read more

So my hair was getting pretty long and I decided to shave just the sides.. myself. Of course it came out crooked but I managed to make it look decent (I work at an office so I have to look a certain way) By the way I have long thing straight hair. Months later my girlfriend suggested to check out Michi in Edgewater. She mentioned they are great and will know how to deal with thin hair. What a great place. Everything looks nice and neat. I was greeted by my stylist and got on the chair right away. I didn't get her name but she was awesome, very kind and caring. My hair was washed twice and I even got a massage. My cut was neat, she did a wonderful job. Of course I will be back! read more

They accommodated me in the last minute, on a Sunday. Listened to what I wanted and did a great job on my haircut! Because I was in a hurry couldn't get the stylist's name. The salon was very neat and maintained sanitary conditions for Covid-19. Definitely will go again. Loved their Milbon hair products! read more

Izumi ruined my hair. Lack of detail and attention, this may be the worst haircut I have had by far. If you want a hair dresser that takes their time and listens do not come here. I went to Michi the first time today for a haircut. I didn't have to wait long. I walked in around 2:10 pm and made an appointment at 3 pm. My hairstylist is Izumi. She is great and she cut my hair to the way I wanted. It cost me $60 and I like it. read more

I've gone to Michi several times to get a Japanese straight perm. Each time my hair has been about the same length so you'd expect that the price would be the same ($250). That was the price the first time and the second time it was $200 because of a one-time $50 discount. The manager Izumi did my perm both times. I went again yesterday, but even though they told me on the phone it would be $250, they charged me $300 and told me that my hair was longer and they used more chemicals so it was more expensive! It is completely outrageous because my hair length is exactly the same as before. Izumi had the day off so a new beautician who came from Japan 2 months ago (Ken) did my perm. I obviously left very upset. On my way home, Ken called me. He said he spoke with the manager and then said the prior $250 price was with the discount and the regular price was always $300. I told him this was a lie and told him about the first 2 times I had a perm. He was caught in the lie and didn't know how to answer. He said he would speak to the manager again - I told him that if $50 wouldn't be refunded to never call me again - and he never called again. Lastly, giving a tip depends on what level of service you get, and I'm happy to tip well when I get good service. They have a sign up that says guests should pay at least a 20% tip which is insulting because they feel like they don't need to give good service at all to get a nice tip. They treated me very disrespectfully and I will never go back! read more

I live near Mitsuwa and decided to go to Haruka to get a hair cut after reading about him on Yelp. He cut my hair and did a very good job. He pinned my hair in hot rolls after he blew it out, which left me with amazing bouncing curls. He told me I looked like a Victoria Secret model for my husband :-) I felt awesome the rest of the day. I will be back! read more

I've never had my hair done here (I go to another Japanese salon for that) but this is the only salon in Jersey that does Calgel nails. They last for about 3-4 weeks, but the girl doesn't do fill ins :( They also do not do acrylics of any kind. Make sure to make an appointment because the girl who does nails is only there on certain days of the week. She does really cute sparkley gradation. read more

Erika is the sweetest hair stylist, loved the way she cut my hair and Shiu does amazing color (only works on the weekends)

I'm giving this place three stars because the two times I've gone for a haircut I was satisfied (once with Erica and once with Cassie). But the third time I went for color and it came out terrible. My stylist was Ken and I asked for a subtle ombré and it came out orangey and did not blend at all, just a straight line across. They charged me $170 and for that price you would expect better skill and quality. read more

I had an amazing experience of quality, professionalism and kindness with Shin today! The jury is still out for me regarding how I feel about calgel. The design was exactly what I asked for, and everyone at the salon was courteous and friendly. I love how thin the gel is in comparison to other gels I've gotten. The problem is after just a week the gel on one of my nails is lifting from the tip. I was really hoping to get more wear out of this manicure for the price. That being said the rest of my nails are still intact and because the color close to my nail bed is clear you can hardly see the re-growth. I will be going back to try the calgel again as I still have high hopes for the process, particularly for use at my upcoming destination wedding. I will update this review once I've given it a second try. If subsequent manicures yield a longer lasting result I will certainly upgrade my review to 5 stars. read more

(I have typical Asian straight hair) Wanted digital perm to get large, loose curls (done it before at a Japanese Manhattan salon before) but after consulting with Ken, he recommended regular perm so I went for it. BIG mistake. I ended up with tiny frizzy curls. Before I left, he offered to do digital if I didn't like the regular perm for only the difference in cost, but I just didn't trust his skills to do my hair again so I didn't return. Do not go to this salon; save your time and money. read more

one of the best hair experiences i've ever had, hands down. i'm pretty particular about my hair, and Michi is the first place i've ever left the salon feeling like the person who worked on me really knew what they were doing and i could rely on them to give me the kind of cut i was looking for, consistently. just a little bit of background, i've got long asian hair so when i went to Michi for the first time in January 2013, it was because i had researched different Japanese/Korean hair salons and Michi came out on top (and added bonus, i could grab lunch at Mitsuwa afterwards, eee!!) i've also gotten digital perm service there just yesterday with Kay (who has done my hair twice before) and i left totally happy with the bouncy curls she gave me. i'm trying my best NOT to wash it today for fear of lessening the curls, but my hair still looks fabulous as it did when i left. i will definitely be going back to Michi for more cuts and digi perms in the future!! yay! read more

I think I finally found my salon soulmate! All the salons I've been to in the past range from high-end Bumble & Bumble salons to great stylists in the East Village of nyc. I thought I'd try the place out since my fiance and I were headed to Mitsuwa for some tasty ramen. Haruka cut my hair, and he did an amazingly detailed job--I live in VA now, but I'll definitely be making the drive back to NJ to get my hair cut by Haruka again! The best part about my haircut? The fact that a few months have passed, but my hair still looks great! The telltale sign of a good cut. read more

Yuki is definitely THE BEST nail art tech in New Jersey! Her creativity and attention to detail are OUTSTANDING! I have found my new local hair salon. I have been searching for the best place for me as I hopped from one to another with Groupon deals, but just couldn't find one where I was truly happy. Michi hair salon is located in the Japanese plaza shared with mitsuwa and is on the second floor. You can't miss it, just take the stair case up from the river road entrance. The store has been here for quite some time, I dare to say over ten years, and it is a modest space but very well managed and a clean welcome environment. Not noisy or bumping with house music either. My stylist was Ken and he was so patient and kind and listened and did a fantastic job cutting my hair. For a hair cut with shampoo it is $60. Ask for Ken! read more

I've been going to Michi Salon for about 4 years after I moved to NJ from NYC so I can speak about them from experience. They are flawlessly polite and they leave you alone (I'm one of those people who can fall asleep while getting a haircut and don't want to be talked to). They are very precise and my haircuts are always consistent. They also massage your scalp with Sea Breeze astringent, which may sound weird, but is oddly refreshing. Additionally, they give you a neck, shoulder & upper back massage with your haircut which makes it the best haircut experience you can imagine. They are also open on Sundays which is great, quiet day to go. So you have convenience & quality rolled up all into one! read more

When I arrived in this salon I was quickly seated for my appointment. I showed Shinobu (my stylist) a picture of what I wanted and said how I hated having my hair short. Shinobu quickly went to work washing my hair and also gave me a head massage. She took at least 30 minutes just washing my hair! Next she went over to drying my hair and dried each and every piece which took at least an hour. By the end of the "hair cutting experience" I got exactly what I came in for. She made my hair super silky soft, and gave me the bangs I have been wanting for along time, for only $40.00! I'm definitely coming back to this salon! read more

After reading all the reviews here, I decided to make an appointment at Michi with Yuki. When I arrived, I was told Yuki was unavailable and Nana was free, would that be OK? Sure. (Bait & Switch opportunity!) I showed Nana what type of design I wanted and asked her if she was able to do it. She said "Oh yes". One would think cool! Don't think like that, you'd be mistaken. While she painstakingly applied the gel, I kept thinking "this will turn out great". I was wrong. But, I stupidly didn't say anything. I had hope...until she finished and noticed the design was uneven, she used too much gel at certain points. Then, when Nana asked to take a photo, seriously, I was amused by this. I told her no, the design is crooked and not photo worthy. She kindly asked if I wanted to fix it. I had to say no. (If it couldn't be done the first time correctly, why would I give you the opportunity to messed it up even more?) I did pay the $75 - I WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN. It was simply a waste of my $. But, live and learn. (The only reason this gets one star? Nana was nice...ineffectual as a nail tech but, really nice.) read more
