Friend and I googled yarn shops in the area and Yarn on Front came up, so off we went to Dowagiac. This little shop is a gem. It was exactly what I was looking for. Unusual yarns from trusted yarn companies. And the owner (?) was very friendly and helpful. When I told her I did a lot of knitting for charity she directed me to the discount yarn bins. There was everything from affordable yarns for every day knitting to the "wow" yarns that one only buys for special people and occasions. Another customer came in and we joked about our yarn stashes (huge but always room for more). Very friendly people! I ended up buying more yarn than I planned just because I was so comfortable with the shop. The choices of needles was huge so I was able to get a circular knitting needle that I had been looking for. It's too bad I don't live in the area as I'd be back here a lot, buying more yarns to add to my stash. It's a lovely shop.

They even have weird stuff like t-shirt yarn and fabric strip yarn. Tons of weaving equipment, spinning wheels, and more. The staff is so knowledgeable and can make great recommendations. Being weavers, they are familiar with how the yardage descriptions vary so dramatically from weaving to knitting yarns. They can help you choose the right type of yarn for your project and are very familiar with the behavior of the yarns after washing and drying (for both knitting and weaving). Spectacular shop! We get them in bulk, at a great discount and we pass that savings on to our customers. We can sell the yarn by the cone, as we get it... or we wind the yarn into smaller packages like a 1lb cone or tube, or an 8oz or 4oz tube. We have no control over what or how much of any yarn we get... we just take what they give us. We can't order or re-order any yarn. So, when it's gone... it's gone. The owner was so helpful the entire time we were in the shop. She gave us a tour, answered all of my moms questions about starting felting, and even printed out a helpful sheet for her. I had called and left a message about the hours and she was so sincere when she replied and apologized for taking so long replying. There are classes being offered every month on different topics. They also have a nice area at the front of the store to sit and knit. She welcomes open knitting when she is open. I believe she so just added a late night knitting on Thursday nights. I cannot wait to see how this shop grows!!

I'm taking a sock class right now, and the instructor, Ann, is great! My only gripe is they don't carry a couple of my favorite fibers, but overall, they have a good selection of fiber. I also thought their prices were pretty fair for a local yarn shop (e.g. skein of Rowan Made Alpaca Haze was $10 vs online is ~$8.80). The staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable. They will point you in the right direction but also let you browse alone (when choosing colors I need full concentration). They also offer a range of classes too! From the outside, this store is unassuming and in stealth mode, it also serves as the office for a storage unit property. The store is a single medium sized room, but it is well organized, and there is plenty of room for all of the goodies. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of lovely fibers in the shop. There is a nice area to take knitting lessons, and plenty of yarn to admire, pet, and purchase. There are also quite a few books - both older and new - that provide inspiration as well as must be purchased! The sharp-as-a-tack owner has lovely samples and knitted items that she's knit up and is happy to show you. There were several fibers that I would usually have passed by that I must buy now (and I bought some then) because I was able to see them in knitted form. There were finished objects that ranged from very simple ones that a beginner could have confidence in doing, to very complex heirloom pieces that inspired me. There was also a good range of prices and fibers from simple and easy machine washable blends to scrumptious baby camel and silk blends. She also sells spinning supplies, and a tempting selection of wool for rug hooking (I'm just learning this, it's the one where you cut the wool into 1/4" wide strips and punch it through the canvas). She has the supplies as well as whole kits for these rugs. The quilting is primarily the custom work that she does, there is no fabric on its own available here. I felt very welcomed, and will certainly stop in again when I'm anywhere near the area. I could have spent much more time here!
