After discovering I had an invasive and aggressive squamous cell carcinoma on my chin, I was referred by my PAMF dermatologist to Dr. Michael Dacey for Mohs surgery. My case apparently is rather rare and he and his colleagues discussed it, all of them having not seen this sort of SCC often in their years of practice. So I was kind of apprehensive about the procedure, wondering what to expect. I was very impressed with Dr. Dacey from the moment he walked into the exam room and introduced himself, looking me directly in the eyes as we shook hands. He went on to explain exactly what was going on with my particular case. He drew a diagram of the area he would be excising, and how he rarely sees this type of aggressive cancer after an initial biopsy that showed a more benign lesion. This squamous cell carcinoma was deep and invading the muscle and nerve. So, it was to my advantage that we caught it early. It can spread to lymph nodes without treatment. Thank goodness the initial lesion was painful and bothersome and on my face. It got me to the doc sooner! His assistants were competent and friendly as they prepped me for the procedure. I felt very much at ease. The exam room was clean and uncluttered and a comfortable temperature. I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed how my eyes or areas of my face didn't have to be draped before and during the surgery as it had been when the plastic surgeon did the previous excision. I'm claustrophobic, so this is a biggie for me. :) Dr. Dacey is so pleasant to talk to. He chatted with me during the procedure and made me feel comfortable as he injected the lidocaine, apologizing for the temporary discomfort. I felt totally at ease. I could tell that he was confident and experienced. After he excised a very deep area of tissue, he then left to look at it microscopically. I stayed in the room with the open excision packed and wrapped while I waited, probably close to an hour. I was told ahead of time that I could bring a book, food, wifi device and even family and friends. My husband actually came and sat in the room with me. Sometimes it takes more than one tissue sample to determine if there's still carcinoma, so there could be multiple specimens and additional wait times. Dr. Dacey came in and gave me the good news that he took a deep enough specimen that showed the area cancer-free. Hurray! However, because of the depth of my lesion and perineural and muscle invasion, he said that radiation would be the next step to zap any cells that may not have been seen. The incision was then sutured and the area bandaged. Stitches will come out next week. All in all, a very easy and uneventful procedure for me. I highly recommend Dr. Dacey if Mohs surgery is said something you need. I can't emphasize enough how personable and competent he is. read more

Never thought I'd write a review for a doctor, but Dr. Dacey was that good. Just had my second Mohs surgery performed by Dr. Dacey in just over a year. Seems my childhood tanning techniques had long term implications. The first surgery was to remove a 50cent size piece of skin cancer from my left temple. This took two tries to get it all, and a substantial amount of suturing to get it closed. Now, a year later, you can't tell anything was done. Amazing. Yesterday, Dr. Dacey removed a piece of the end of my nose that my dermatologist has diagnosed as Squamous cell carcinoma. Yuck. The original biopsy performed by Dr. Wennie Liao, didn't get it all. BTW, I hate needles and anything that has to do with any type of procedure. As he did the first time, Dr. Dacey was personable, professional and explained exactly what he was going to do. Apart from the first numbing needle, I didn't feel a thing. If you need to get this type of work done, absolutely go to Dr. Dacey. He is the best and his assistant lives up to his high expectations. read more

I just wanted to mention I am puzzled by the previous review. If somebody is going to a traditonal doctor than why expect non traditional treatment. It would be liking going to Starbucks and asking for a cocktail. I am guessing he was not laughing at you but perhaps shocked by your comments. I find Dr Dacey to be a very good communicater that makes good eye contact and explains in detail his findings and suggested treatment. I would expect over to see over time that his reviews will rate the good doctor more fairly and with ratings closer to mine than to the original one listed. What a pleasant surprise, my Mohs surgery was less painful then the biopsy I had from another doctor. Dr. Dacey puts you at ease the moment he walks into the exam room. It was during my surgery that I realised - this is easy - this doctor is great - I'm going to be fine! Dr Dacey fully explained every step of the procedure I had, drawing me diagrams and explaining it clearly. He is very knowledgable, friendly and optimistic. He was fully engaged with my case almost as if I was the only patient he had. Dr Dacey quickly, I mean quickly, diagnosed my skin issue and offered a treatment. He was friendly, sat down to talk with me. He was warmer than the previous derm I tried. We even a had a few moments to connect on commonalities, which is really in the 'how' of the conversation, not the 'what'. I left very satisfied, and the front desk was easy as pie (they have me in the system from over 15 years ago). They scanned my insurance card and I had only to initial twice and sign once. Honestly, it went much better than I expected, what with a 10 minute appointment scheduled (shocking, truly shocking for a first time appointment). My husband and good friend had recommended him to me. Perhaps most important, even in that short of time, I trust him to treat my issue. Such a bizarre experience, as others here have noted. I've never experienced a doctor as disinterested in me, or my health, in all my years. I don't even think he made eye contact with me once. So, it gets even weirder. Long story short, they had gone ahead and charged me for things that I did not ask for, nor did they tell me that these charges were their "procedure". When I complained, they did offer to drop the charges... get this... only if I promised I would never return to see the doctor again! This was his assistant relaying the message straight from him!!! I had recently seen Dr. Michael Dacey for a skin condition that I thought was untreatable, as the last two dermatologists I had seen previously couldn't recognize what was going on. One dermatologist (Sandra Yeh in San Jose) even tried to upsell me on a chemical peel which would have hindered my skin condition even more. It took Dr. Dacey no more than 2 minutes to detect that I had a special case of eczema and explained the regimen he was going to prescribe me. I tried the prescriptions he ordered me and sure enough, my skin made a complete transformation. I am grateful I gave Dr. Dacey a try, even after reading the negative review below. Ignore that person and focus on the other 5 star reviews, because those are more accurate. read more

Dr. Dacey has horrible "people skills." He doesn't give thorough explanations (about my recurring skin problem). Sometimes he doesn't answer some of the questions I ask him; he just ignores the questions he doesn't want to answer (even though they are important to me). He told me he decided to specialize in dermatology because he wanted to perform surgeries and related procedures, which I hear he is good at. During my annual skin checks, he doesn't spend a lot of time examining my skin (which has a multitude of skin conditions, including history of 3 skins cancers in the last 5 years). He just shakes my hand and says "you're doing great", and walks out of the room. If you want a doctor to takes the time to answer questions about your various skin conditions, and has reasonable "people skills", I suggest you find another dermatologist. I will not return to see Dr. Dacey anymore. read more

I had a very strange and disturbing appointment with Dr Dacey. I scheduled to go in for a diagnosis for a rash that had popped up on my hands and feet. He looked at it, told me it was a type of eczema and that I HAD to go on steroids to treat it. When I mentioned that I had researched topical steroids and that I wanted to avoid all the really bad side effects he laughed at me, told me I didn't know what I was talking about, and that I could not treat my skin any other way. He stood up, slammed the door open and walked out of the room when I asked about natural remedies. Really?Three months later I have perfectly normal, healthy, beautiful skin with changes in diet, supplements, and topical oils. Too bad this MD doesn't want to take the time to "do no harm" and find out what else may be available for his patients. I will never go back to this clinic after the attitude and unprofessional manner this doctor used in the 4 minutes he spent with me. Everything about him was toxic. read more

I saw Dr. Michael Dacey and I can honestly say it was the worst experience I've ever had with a medical professional. I was in the midst of a very stressful summer -- my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy scheduled. Perhaps it was from the stress, or maybe a hormonal problem, but my usually clear skin had been broken out for months. I was really self-conscious and worried about scarring. On the morning of my appointment i was flustered, running behind and had other appointments to take my mom that day. After rushing to the office and filling out paperwork I was 7 minutes late for my appointment. Dr. Dacey walked in and seemed flustered and bothered. When I told him I was interested in getting to the root of my problem, not just covering it up with topical medicine or antibiotics, he cut me off and proceeded to tell me that he had surgery in a few minutes and that he didn't have time to do that. Very condescendingly he told me that I had "wasted" my own appointment time and his time by showing up late. He wrote me a quick Rx for antibiotics and didn't answer any of my questions, even though I had eagerly waited 5 weeks for my appointment. He spent more time making me feel badly for being late than taking the time to hear my concerns, which were important to me at the time. I feel like this is a perfect example of, "You never know what others are going through." Maybe HE had had a bad morning that day, or was feeling stressed or overworked with his job or issues in his personal life. It was very obvious that he didn't have the awareness to consider the same for me, and that the reason I was late that day was because I too had so much on my plate. I called the clinic later that day and said that I wanted my co-pay to be reimbursed, because I received little to no care, with zero compassion. An office manager called me back and apologized, reimbursed me, and said that they only allow short increments for these appointments because they are in such high demand. Regardless, I feel like it was unprofessional on Dr. Dacey's part to have made me feel guilty for rushing him to his surgery. I don't think surgery should be scheduled 20 minutes after an appointment time, and should not have been communicated to me at all. I hope this 1-star review encourages Dr. Dacey to speak differently to his future patients with the kindness and respect we deserve. I will obviously never go back to him again. read more

I've been seeing Dr Dacey for about 5 years now. He's always been thorough in his assessments as well as being a personable guy. Recently, I had a basal cell removed from my nose. He was very efficient in during the entire procedure and took the time to remove as little as possible and then check in the lab to make sure he got it all. Finally, he did a small skin graft so the visual effects would be minimized. He kept me fully informed and comfortable through the entire process. I'm a real happy patient! read more

Dr. Dacey was recommended to me when I found out that my own local dermatologist who did the biopsy would not be able to do the prescribed MOHs surgery on my facial skin cancer in a timely way due to her busy surgery schedule. It was bothering me and I didn't want to wait. I was so relieved when I learned that he could remove it that very same week! The front office was clean, professional and polite. The paperwork was minimal. His assistant was efficient and kind as was Dr. Dacey. He carefully explained everything that was going to happen. The pain was minimal and he took great care with the stitches. He also explained to me about the healing process and sent me home with little ice packs and printed information on caring for the disappearing stitches and the scar. It has been almost a month and the scar is barely visible already! I am impressed! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone. It was well worth the drive to Soquel. read more

This wonderful Dermatologist has provided wonderful care to me since I moved to Santa Cruz from the Bay Area 6 years ago. He did the Moh's procedure on two different sights, to save me from skin cancer. He is thorough, kind and gentle. He answered all my questions, and I felt much less anxiety as a result. I have met other physician's along the way since I have been here, and Dr.Dacey is on the top of the list of "good finds". I would absolutely recommend him for any dermatological needs. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Dacey's for 5+years. During that time, I have been impressed with the quality of care that I have received from him. He explains things well and offers informed and effective treatment options. He is observant and will often ask about issues that he sees happening with my skin in the course of the appointment. I have seen Dr. Dacey for chronic skin issues as well as cosmetic issues. He has provided excellent treatment for both. He recently performed laser treatment on broken capillaries on my face. The results have been incredible and life changing. He is a somewhat of a perfectionist which I think is a great quality for a derm guy! Who doesn't want flawless skin?! He is kind and compassionate in his care and quickly put me at ease.
