The MICA Team is fantastic! We had booked a Ice Fall Trek at Matanushka Glacier and had the best experience with them. The check in experience was seamless following which we were each given helmet, boots, crampons and backpacks and briefed about what to expect in the hike. Our tour guide Kendall was very knowledgeable and stopped at various places during the hike to explain the different phenomena visible on the black ice and glaciers. We felt very safe with her and learnt how to use crampons properly (very important for glacier hikes!) This Glacier trek was one of the best parts of our Alaska trip and thankful to MICA guides for making it so amazing and fun for us.

My husband surprised me for our 12th anniversary with the most epic adventure, we started with a breathtaking helicopter ride into the glacier, not a fan of heights and not a thrill seeker but this was worth getting over those fears. We had a private tour guide, Adam, cannot possibly give him enough great adjectives, he was so fun and fact filled and completely committed to making sure I felt safe while making me test my boundaries. We climbed ice walls!! We saw incredible water features and we were out there for about 6 hours alone. The rarefied air we were able to breath humbles you. We ended our tour with an amazing base camp where Julian took over, I didn't think we could find a nicer guide than Adam but Julian was just as amazing. He took care of us from 4:30 until 10:30 the next morning, we had hot coffee, Margaritas, Hot Toddies, dinner served while we were sitting around a hot fire and then french toast served in the morning. The only thing we had to do while we were there was to take it all in. My husband also got us the Glacier Glamping Tent and honestly it was the most comfortable bed/covers that we had the entire trip. I didn't want to leave!! And I swore that next time we'd stay 2 nights if they offered it. Mica tours are just top notch, this was the best gift I never knew I wanted.

My wife and I really enjoyed the Matanuska advanced glacier hike with Ford! He was very knowledgeable about the glacier and geology in the area. He had a fun personality. He let the group decide how "adventurous" of a route and features we would explore while remaining cognizant of hazards and keeping us safe. We had a great time and felt that the longer "advanced" trek allowed us ample time to explore a satisfying number of features and take photos. In all our group covered about 7 miles on the glacier and moraine. It was our first experience on a glacier and felt like a good one to start with.

Signed up for the Advanced Ice Trek and Brett did an awesome job as a guide. First of all, I was joining my 2 friends who had signed up earlier. Although MICA Guides has strict guide-to-hiker ratios, because I was checking in every day to sign up (they require at least 2 people sign up at the same time for a trek) and the ice trek I had wanted got booked up, they were nice enough to talk to Brett, who was willing to make a one-time exception and take an extra person. They are always available to answer phones too, it's interesting--I called around 10pm once to leave a message and to my surprise, they answered and were as very courteous. The hike was perfect and definitely worth the $150 (including glacier access fee charged by the owner of the land). Brett was very knowledgeable about glaciers and he took us to an ice cave that he discovered. I am so glad I was able to get into this activity, because the other Ice Trek would've just been to take a look at the ice falls for $84. The advanced trek had more features while not being too physically taxing as expected. If anyone wonders if they can handle it, I'd say: any normal person with average physical activity should probably be able to do this.

Our guide Sherman (Thomas) was wonderful! We had a great experience at the glacier. We felt very safe and learned lots of fun glacial facts! The 6 to 1 trekker to guide ratio was much appreciated after seeing some other massive groups out there with just 1 guide, from a different guide company. We even saw a baby black bear on the way to the glacier. It's always more fun doing these kind of things when you have an enthusiastic guide!

Julian and Ford were awesome, patient, knowledgeable, and well trained as our guides. We appreciated all of the interesting facts and stories they shared not only about the glacier but also about their experiences. We would highly recommend MIcA and also ask for Ford and Julian. Tell 'em Nashville sent ya! (Don, give them a ride up the glacier in the helo for being so great!)

We were staying in Wasilla and knew we had to do a glacier hike, I just wasn't sure which company to go with. In the end we decided on MICA, they were one of the more affordable options and they had a longer time period advertised for the trek. I am SO GLAD we chose this one. Warren was a great guide, had interesting facts and knowledge went our speed, was informative, and allowed us to explore. The sights constantly change cause it's a glacier but this trip is a must! You can venture on your own but you won't be as secure or able to go off exploring like you can with a guide. Being with a guide allows you to feel comfortable as well as allows you to see things you can't on your own, like climbing into a moulin. I would do it again and with MICA!!

WOW! What an experience! From the helicopter ride to the glacier hike, to the glamping on top of the glacier it was all so surreal and life-changing! The team at MICA Guides are super professional but also personable and I felt like I was chatting with old friends. They know their sh*t and are ready to educate you on glacier knowledge, but they are also human enough to hold a real conversation. Renee greeted us and made sure we were prepared for the next 24 hours. She was funny and made me and my son feel very comfortable. Next, we had a quick helicopter ride with (can't remember his name) but he was also professional and has been flying for over 17 years (At least thats what I think he said) so I felt pretty safe with him behind the cock pit (or whatever they call the driver seat of a helicopter). Next, we got to hike around the glacier with Jay. He was super chill and also a glacier expert. He was very educated and seemed to know all about glaciers. If he didn't well he definitely fooled me. LOL. We ended our evening with the overnight glacier glamping. OMG, those tents and those beds were AMAZING. Kelsey was our overnight glacier host. She was super sweet also had a great sense of humor and made the whole overnight experience super fun. We ate salmon with pesto pasta and they topped off our mugs with warm adult beverages. How can you not love this place?! I wanted to live on the glacier. Well during summer. The MICA Guides team seem like a big family and I felt like they truly loved what they do. Thanks again for such a great experience. We will be back for sure.

We had a fantastic experience at MICA guides this Thursday. We had Advanced tour (10am-5pm) with Katie. Katie was fantastic!! She guided us exploring unexpected glorious ice caves, hiking and climbing on huge glacier, and what's more, I swam in a glacier pond!! Katie was so nice and helpful!! We all had wonderful experience! MICA guides is only 2 hours drive from Anchorage, which is convenient for a day tour. And this tour is below 200$! This is a must go! I went to Denali and Seward, but my favorite is MICA guides!! Highly recommend!!

We toured the Matanuska glacier with Augie on July 12, 2025. We had an amazing time exploring the glacier. Augie was very well informed and excited to show us his recently discovered crevasses, rocks, sharing the location's history and evolution. We enjoyed learning more from Augie. It was evident that he is passionate about what he does. read more

MICA came highly recommended and they did not disappoint! They gave lots information on what to expect and bring beforehand, multiple reminders, and detailed directions. At check in everyone was friendly and welcoming. I got lucky and was with a group of two other people, which made the experience feel a lot more personal. We scored with the best guide ever, Levi! His knowledge of the glacier was so impressive. I felt safe and secure the entire time. He triple checked everything, on every climb. It was an incredible experience and I cannot recommend MICA, and Levi, enough! Would definitely do again! read more

I went in the glacier trek with Baxter and Kyle and it was an awesome time. I was with several scouts and Baxter and Kyle interacted with the boys like they were old friends. They were both so knowledgeable and we all learned a lot about the Matanuska glacier and about the formations of the mountains all around us. They were very safety conscious and made me feel very comfortable on the glacier. I highly recommend the Mica Guides for your glacier experience. We also went zip lining with the Mica guides group. I had never zip lined before and our guides Meg and Ryan were equally as awesome. They were great at explaining how our harnesses were being connected and how they would keep us safe. They kept the mood fun and light so my anxiety stayed under control. I never felt any pressure to go and believe if I wanted to back out my decision would have been supported. However, because of Meg and Ryan's upbeat attitudes I easily took the step off the platform and zipped through the air. It was a great experience. Mica Guides was a great time. If you are ever in Alaska it will be well worth your time to visit the Matanuska Glacier with Mica Guides. read more

My husband and I booked and Ice Climbing adventure and our guide Warren made the trip great! My husband is an experienced climber and I am a novice. This trip is wonderful for those looking for a glacier experience with a little adventure. We traveled with another couple who were also into climbing. Ice climbing on a glacier was by far one of my favorite activities in Alaska. How it works: From Anchorage, it is about a 110 mile trip to the MICA Guides office. It's a really pretty and easy drive from Anchorage along the Glen Highway. Once there, you are outfitted with mountaineering boots, gaiters, crampons, helmet, gloves, and harness. What we needed to bring were sunglasses, a lunch, waterproof pants and a waterproof top. Optional things are extra layers for warmth like a fleece, rain jacket etc. We wore our own gloves under the ones they gave us as well as a hat to wear under the helmets. Once outfitted, its a quick 15 minute trip or so to the start of the glacier and you trek in about another half hour or so. Once there, you will be on the the glacier for about 4+ hours. It's a full day of adventure and activity. The trip is really stress-free due to the professionalism and friendliness of the guides. They set-up the anchors, taught us how to walk and use crampons, belay you, show the basics of ice climbing, offer encouragement without being annoying, and overall are just great people to have around when you feel like you're looking stupid while trying something new. The climbing experience is absolutely worth trying. It's similar to rock climbing but it felt more skill based than strength based. Don't worry if you've never ice climbed or held an ice ax in your life, they will start you on an easier route and you can advance to a harder and more technical one if you'd like. It's a great experience, be prepared to work hard and enjoy the fruits of your labor once on top of the glacier wall! What a great view and feeling of accomplishment. Don and Mandi, our guides, were also really knowledgeable about the glacier and we went on a short glacier trek afterwards. It was an amazing experience being on the glacier and we had the best time. Highly recommended. read more

Went on an advance trek this July which far out blew any expectations I might of had for the tour. The tour was composed of 5 people total including the guide and only passed another group of people a couple of times, most of the tour it felt like we where the only ones out there which made the experience so much better. Our guide Wes was INCREDIBLE!! Very knowledgeable and made sure we stayed safe at all times but also provided with vast opportunities to explore and play at the glacier. He knew exactly where to go on the glacier in order to see some of the features you just might not get to see if you try to do it on your own, they really know the area. The scenery is like any other, pictures do not do it justice, got to see blue pools, explore glacier canyons, and got to do some climbing and rappelling on the glacier. 100% recommend going with MICA guides. read more

Don, the owner of Mica, made this an unforgettable trip for my two teenage girls and me. He helped me plan out the entire adventure. We ice climbed with Luke, who was the best guide ever and had us climbing the ice walls on the glacier. Then we spent the night on a glacier, and Lindsay was an outstanding host; the meals were five-star, and the glacier cocktails were epic. Tommy took us ATV riding through the wilderness, and then Peter and John lead the team on our whitewater rafting trip. We Ziplined with Andy and Caroline, and they had us "Zipping" through the rainbow-lined sky. I highly recommend MICA for your Alaska adventure! read more

My boyfriend and I decided to cruise to Alaska in our 30s/40s, rather than waiting until we were too old to actively enjoy what this type of trip had to offer, and this trek/climb was exactly the reason why! You simply can't go to Alaska and not walk on a glacier, and getting to ice climb on one was sensational. We hiked the Grand Canyon rim to rim the previous summer, and this was right up there with that as the most amazing experience of my life. Our guides, Pete and Scott, were the perfect balance of professional and personable, and they are the reason that this adventure was so special. While they asked us about ourselves and shared fascinating info and stories on our trek to/on the glacier, they were also gauging our abilities so they could set up climbs perfectly tailored to the level of challenge we were capable of tackling. It was certainly strenuous and daunting, but we were never nervous because we knew that their expertise, skill, judgment...and ropes that could hold a truck...had our backs. And we could always hear them cheering us on from below--eventually, quite far below. This type of encouragement is what gave us the confidence to get onto the wall in the first place and what propelled us up those last few feet to the top. Thank you, MICA Guides, for the thrill, the support, and the memories!! read more

Great ice trekking experience with Mica, barring just one experience. ie the $25/person access fee (we were party of eight, so hurt us even more with this sudden fee). Agreed, it does show up on their website in fine prints and also know that's its charged by a third party taking advantage of the system, but not adding that to the cost or not spelling it out the amount (vs simply mentioning an access fee will be charged separately) isn't a shining example of transparency, is it ? Apart from that, the experience was really great. The guides, Ben and Morgan were knowledgeable and experienced and kept the kids and us engaged all throughout the trip.. read more

Everything about this place is excellent. I mean, all of it. The ice climbing was a surreal experience that left me driven to come back to AK for more as soon as I possibly can. The guides are great with a bright attitude (Noah and Sandra) and the day never felt rushed. I used to be a climbing nut in my 20's and climbed all over Italy and France. Now, in my mid-40's, I am energized to climb again and the Mica team (and the glacier) brought it back to me. Some other props for the Mica Guides post: Great baked goods, great hats (yeah, I bought two...), and amazing coffee that they take very, very seriously!!!!! If you are in Alaska for any reason, take the drive and let the Mica Guides give you a day of amazingness that you will never forget. read more

I did the Matanuska Advanced Trek on August 2020. I would definitely recommend this trek to anyone with an adventurous spirit. You need to be relatively fit because it involves a lot of hiking on uneven terrain but you don't need any experience with ice and crampons. The guides are great, very experienced and friendly! The views are amazing, our group was able to see crevasses, moulins, a canyon, and a pool! read more

3 of my friends and I went on the Ultimate Helicopter tour and couldn't recommend it more! Our guide, Brett, was super knowledgeable about the glacier and ice climbing, tailored the experience to our interests and abilities, and was awesome to hang out with. Even though they couldn't guarantee that certain glacial features would be accessible because the glacier changes from week to week, they worked hard to honor our request to explore any crevasses/ moulins available, and we appreciated that Brett taught us how to ice climb at a quicker pace given our existing experience with climbing/ canyoneering. The helicopter tour was also a gorgeous way to see Matanuska glacier, and Dusty, the pilot, was an excellent flier. We'd 100% recommend this tour and MICA guides to anyone who wants to get out into the backcountry side of the glacier and explore its depths! read more

After reading very good reviews about Mica guides we thought of trying them out. We are very happy with the service they provided. This is definitely the best way to enjoy the beauty of Matanuska. I would say if you don't use their services then you will know and enjoy a tiny fraction of what Matanuska has to offer. We (my wife and I) went there on a 2 day trip during the week of 4th July. We had plan to do ice fall trek and ice climbing but because of too much rush during that time we could not get a spot for ice climbing. The ice fall trek exceeded all our expectations. We spent 4 hours with Mica guides and they were very friendly and cooperative during all this time. We did not have any accommodation when we reached there. The lady at reception also helped us reserve a hotel that was next to Matanuska glacier. Our guide (Richard) was a very friendly and knowledgeable guy. He pointed us to lot of cool facts about Matanuska which we would have ignored very easily. And seriously, there is no fun in a trip to Matanuska if you don't notice those facts. They provided us crampoons that made walking on ice very easy. They also had good hiking boots available for use. Basically, just walk there, pay the fee and they take care of everything else. Overall our visit to Matanuska became one of the highlights of our Alaska trip and Mica guides had a big role in that. :-) read more

Mind blowing!! Mica has it going on, they know what they're doing! This experience was incredible and for such a great price. We had Sam as our guide-ask for him if you can. Sam was the best teacher and guide we had experienced throughout our entire trip to Alaska. We did excursions with different guides every day and he was the best we encountered. He was patient and explained what we were going to do every step of the way. He was also very fun, skilled, and made it a great time! Everything was smooth and they provide all the gear. Thank you mica for this unforgettable experience. It was a winter wonderland and I couldn't take enough pictures. read more
OK, so if you're in Alaska... you have to go ice climbing. It will probably be one of the coolest things you will ever do. And if you do it, make sure to go with MICA because they are beyond awesome. There is no way I can describe how fantastic the guides are and it's not because they didn't laugh at me when I hit myself in the face with my boots while taking them off. These guys seriously rock. So after I saw Al Gore's 'An Inconvenient Truth' I realized I would not only have to go see the glaciers before they all melted, but I'd have go to climb one too. So I made sure ice climbing was a part of my itinerary during my trip to Alaska and away I went. I was somewhat dubious about the whole thing at first. I'm really gung ho about trying new stuff and I try really hard, but in the end, sometimes physically I just can't keep up. I realized there would be a lot of upper body strength involved in this and got sort of wary when I saw all the gear I needed. Plus, it was raining. I checked in at their main office which is on Mile 102 of Glenn Highway (about 2 hours north of Anchorage). I signed waivers and got outfitted in gear which was all provided (rain proof clothing, boots, helmet, harness...) You're supposed to come with a lunch, day pack, rain gear, warm payers, and sunglasses but if you don't have it, they have extras so no worries. Also, don't forget to bring a camera because you're really gonna want to document this trip. Once you're done getting outfitted, you take a drive down to the Matanuska Glacier (make sure to use the bathroom before you leave because the trip is about 6 hours). Aside from the cost of the actual ice climbing trip ($130.00/person) there is also a fee to enter the glacier park which is $15/person. There's a bit of a hike up and around the glacier before you start climbing and it can get sort of taxing with all your gear. Our guide Cornelia kept us informed about all the different facts regarding our surroundings and the glacier itself which was very informative and even entertaining. Once you get to the wall you'll be climbing, you get all your gear in check and your guide will hook you up with your harness and you'll be doing a couple of practice climbs before a big one. Now here was where I started to wonder if I would be able to do this. It was hard. It required a lot of strength and patience. I kept slipping and sliding straight down the wall and bless Cornelia's heart, she had to hold on tight so that I wouldn't fall and smash my head in. I felt bad cuz I'm sure I gave her a crazy workout. But I realized I really wanted this experience so I just stuck it out climb for climb and I was really proud of myself. It is just an amazing experience and when you climb up to the top, it's surreal looking down and around you, seeing the glaciers for miles and miles. Kinda scary too. I wish I could do a better job of explaining it but it's one of those things you've just got to experience firsthand to really appreciate it. The weather was cold but you couldn't really tell from all the exertion from the climbing. However, when you stop moving you can really feel it. There was no specific time we stopped to eat lunch, we just ate whenever we were waiting around to climb or we were resting. You know how Visa has ads with lists of things to do in your lifetime? This should so be on that list and everyone should go. read more

Okay, so I didn't do the super cool thing and go ice climbing, but I did do the glacier trek that they offer. When I got there, I learned that I was the only one that had signed up for that particular trek. I was super stoked! I met my guide, Natalie, and got my helmet and crampons. Away we went... I got soooo lucky - Natalie was awsome and she knows her stuff. I felt completely comfortable and safe with her leading me around some sketchy ice/slush areas. Being the only one in my group, it felt as though I was out there with a buddy instead of a guide. She's really personable. The next time I'm in the Anchorage area, I'll definately go back to MICA Guides to go ice climbing! read more

History
Established in 1999.
MICA Guides was started by our friend Julie in 1999. Back in those days we brought our guests on Exposure Alaska adventure tours out to Julie for trekking and ice climbing. In 2004 we took over MICA Guides and merged with our Exposure operation to offer a complete Alaska Adventure experience for our guests.
Meet the Business Owner: Don and Tina W.
Don and Tina are the founders of Exposure Alaska and owners, operators of MICA Guides. Tina is originally from Australia and Don from North Carolina but these days they make their home in a small cabin, off the grid in Alaska.

A cold, wet, miserable trip to Anchorage left my daughter and I bummed. We had picked this weekend for the Costco 600 as nothing was going to be fun in this weather; but as we drove out of Palmer and got on the North side of Range, everything opened and that Mythical light source spread hope for the rest of our trip home. Get out the Kite, Kayaks, fishing poles, recon our berry spots? What should we do? Luckily, she chose Ice Cream and mentioned Zipline. We have driven past Mica Guides enough times to know they provided this service, but the Zipline was always closed when we stopped in. Today it wasn't. We signed up and soon were in the hands of MICA's Awesome Guides: Sarah and Meg. They quickly whisked my daughter and I on an exceptional, uniquely Alaskan Trip that was well worth the stop. These two exceptional Gals helped make my daughter extremely comfortable and at ease as they answered all her questions and alleviated her fears. Seeing her drop in on her first epic Zip was amazing! Thank-you MICA guides for having this Zipline and especially for have such Motivating Guides as Sarah and Meg to help inspire my daughter! The three hours spent finishing our drive home to Valdez was spent with a chatty preteen asking about Ziplines when we can do it again... (PS Mica: You are going to need to offer a Punch Card for Alaskans driving by....) read more

Went on an advanced glacier tour with Warren & Dekker and OMG it was amazing! Myself and my husband have never done anything like that and it was a trip we will never forget. We hiked, climbed the glacier in parts, and even drank from the pools! (Don't bring lots of water ya just fill out there, I kid you not!) I am a more nervous type when it comes to adventurous activities but I felt so safe with these two. Just hearing what they are qualified in and what skills they have made it so much more stress free, and them being sticklers for safety even more so made me feel comfortable. They push your limits a bit but in a good way! They were informative, fun, light hearted souls who made it one of our top Alaskan experiences. Would highly recommend them and this company who has definitely got their stuff together! read more

BEST TOUR EVER! We were blessed with a beautiful day and lucked out with a private tour guide named Julien. It was absolutely the best. We spent the whole time, about 3.5 hours actually on the ice of the glacier. We got to see it from so many angles. Julien took care of me as I tried to keep from breaking my fool neck and always made me feel safe and secure. His knowledge was limitless and he told us so much about glaciers and how they shape and form the land around them. The beauty of this trek can't be described and pictures don't do it justice but I beg everyone to try this at least once in their lives! read more

I thoroughly enjoyed the hiking trip on Matanuska glacier. Luke was our guide along with Julian, Lindsey and another gentleman who's name escapes me. I am from Alaska and this is not the first glacier I've visited, but it is the best by far. The guides were great and provided awesome opportunities to see unique features of the glacier. The cost was surprisingly low and well worth every penny. I recommend everyone who is traveling the Glen highway take a few hours and visit Mica guides. You'll be glad you did. read more

Our tour was absolutely amazing! My family and I had Jackie and Thomas as our guides and they super fun to talk with and told us so much about the different places on the glacier. They took safety very seriously but knew how to make it enjoyable for us. Overall I would love to go back the glacier itself it very interesting but with wonderful guides and a warm atmosphere all around camp it made the trio even more fun. read more

Hannah Rodell was the best guide ever!! I really didn't want to go since it was rainy and cold. but our kids didn't want to make a change to another day. Hannah was so I informative about the glaciers. Her love for nature was evident the more she talked. She was the key to keeping this ADHD woman interested and not bored! read more

We loved this tour company! We debated between the ice climb and advanced trek and opted for the trek. It was a nice variety of climbing, rappelling, hiking, and sightseeing. Brett and Adam were our guides and were phenomenal. The tour itself was amazing, and I highly recommend it. read more
