I've been practicing Shotokan since I was a child. I've competed in WKF, USANK, JKA, WUKO, AAU, competitions nationally and on the international stage. I am new to the area and was looking for a place to train. My first impression when walked in was that it looked like a traditional Dojo. The Sensei who I assumed was the chief instructor was sitting in his office that is situated across the floor, which makes it unapproachable. The office had a window that he could see out of and still would not pay attention to the fact that there was a visitor there who could be looking for some information. He only came out when the kids class began. Once the class began he would have the most senior student lead the warm up which is fine, but he was not active in coaching or guiding the students. After the warm up Kihon began. instead of teaching, guiding and directing, he would shout in a demeaning and abusing manner towards the children. I've trained with high level Sensei's, Shihan's, and High level coaches. I have never seen or would I put up with a Dojo owner behaving this way. On a side note yes the JKA competes internationally mainly ipon shobu, but it's not THE US team. The official US team that is recognized by the international Olympic committee is governed by the USANKF. I walked away in disgust without saying a word. I really don't believe the JKA hombu Dojo in Tokyo would approve. read more
