I can see how there are some negative reviews of the service, but I just feel like they're tired of tourists (don't blame them) because once we started to have a conversation with our server, her personality came out. The salsa was great, cheese dip was typical but the food was just meh. The rice has veggies is in it and not a lot of flavor. My chimichanga was stuffed full of chicken, but it was dry. The place needs some TLC, it's in a historic building like much of the city, but needs some fresh paint and new tables.

We got both chopped guac and creamy guac to get started. They both ordered tacos and really enjoyed them. I needed a vegan option, so I ordered the vegetarian fajitas without cheese or sour cream. In the dining room there were several large TVs showing the World Cup game so I was able to watch that as a bonus. I ordered a Mexican draft beer and the Birria tacos, a house speciality. The complimentary basket of chips and salsa was great. The chips were okay but the salsa was terrific. When the tacos arrived I was impressed by the presentation. There were four crispy tacos filled with stewed beef, onions, cheese, and something green (lettuce? Peppers?). They were delicious with the little bowl of dipping sauce (like a French dip!) or alone. The food was reasonably priced. Staff were kind and checked on me regularly. A large party left just after I was seated and they made a huge mess with food, straw wrappers, and napkins all over the tables and the floor. Otherwise the dining area was clean and in good condition.

To my surprise it was served with a side of mixed sautéed vegetables cooked to perfection rather than the traditional rice and beans. $12 Reasonably priced and yummy beyond expectations! It obviously has plenty of other charms, most notably its beautiful and remote Blue Ridge mountain environment. But dining options turned out to be drab indeed. The Santo Niño tienda and restaurant was very much an exception, though. We only made it there once but should have come here for every restaurant meal we had while in the area. Based on a couple of tortas, this humble family-run spot killed it on the food. Everything was fresh as it could be, and the kitchen does not skimp on the more-expensive ingredients like avocado and meat, or any other ingredient for that matter. These were sizeable sandwiches. Lengua was tender and succulent, and the wife thought the chorizo was great, too. The tortas are served with fries that were better than they looked (which was rather Ore-Ida-ish)--piping hot with some crispiness to them. I was only a little bummed because it was only after our food was on the way that I realized that the restaurant has pozole on Sundays. Santo Niño occupies a spot in a shabby and grim strip center on the western edge of town. Don't be deterred by this. The business inside is hardly fancy, but it has a warm and comforting feel.
