Usually it's the Freeport location, but I love the Old Port too. I found the best pair of pants, in the clearance section! Love love love them. And Allison was so kind to find me a matching top, and I absolute love it. And I grabbed a knit like cardigan too. I figure I was saving so much on the pants, it didn't mind paying full price for 2 tops! Service was outstanding as well. I don't remember the cashiers name. But she was wonderful too! I recommend never purchasing anything from Mexicali Blues. They sent me this bright yellow, ugliest skirt ever, and won't stand behind the bait and switch they pulled on me to allow me to get all of my money back. I tried to return the skirt. As you can see from the photo, it looks like the wrong product. So I marked that on the return. My return was rejected. Customer service tells me that this is my responsibility and this was clearly my fault and I have to pay. See photo of her email and the photo of the product. If they wanted it to be quite clear that the skirt pictured on the website could look absolutely NOTHING like the one they picture, then they should picture more than one skirt for the color range - or be more specific. Are the colors in it or not. On a previous purchase of a magic skirt, their website suggested to me that I pay the surcharge to exchange or return. I knew there were no returns, but nothing was said about exchanges I thought I could exchange. No go on that either. So I told her that I had paid it and I felt I should be able to use it on this purchase. The answer was again, no. She was very critical. Why would I purchase it? If you are into third-world cheaply made, no standard sizing type of colorful clothing than you'll love this junk. Items are not true to size or even close and trying to return and exchange is not easy, not to mention that there is only 45 day return policy. I purchased an item when I was in the store this summer. My gift recipient got it in September after the 45 days return policy. I was told I could not exchange it. It is unacceptable that I cannot exchange a gift item that has never been worn and has tags because of an inflexible policy. Other companies have longer return periods and if tags are still on the item they take them back regardless of time. I have never been impressed with the sizing of the clothing so never shopping there again is fine. Advice: if you can, try the clothing on in the store and save yourself aggravation. read more

Mexicali Blues offers "clothing that fits your mind, jewelry to accent your life". One of the most appropriate slogans for a local businesses, if you ask me! If you're looking for articles of clothing taken right out of the 1970's or music festivals that span generations, anything considered hippie or bohemian, or beach wear that ranges from sarongs to baja hoodies... you're going to find it here along with a unique selection of Eastern-inspired jewelry and home accessories. I would love if my house was filled with nothing but their brightly colored tapestries, incense, prayer flags, paper lanterns, wooden statues, and wind chimes... but I simply can't afford it. You really are paying for premium, imported products. So when they have a sale - take advantage of it! I'm not sure I fit the clothing style here, so until recently the only things from Mexicali Blues that I owned was: 1. An enormous infinity scarf that can be worn a dozen different ways and seems to permanently smell like nag champa. 2. A pair of earrings. Granted, they are singlehandedly the most complimented fashion item I own, so I couldn't be happier (especially since a) they were only $7, b) I've never seen another person with them, and c) Mexicali Blues stopped selling them long, long ago thus ensuring my coolness factor). Whenever my mom visits from out of state, though, we make it a point to stop by because she loves their summer dresses and palezzo pants. We often try and snag either option if they're available and on sale (the clothing options here change much faster than you might think, so if you find something you like BUY IT NOW... the likelihood of them having it in stock in weeks to come are slimmer than you know). On our latest trip, I actually found the most comfortable skirts in the world here (imagine if yoga pants became flowing, breathable skirts - yum, right?), but just two of them set me back by almost $80. Will that stop me from coming back soon to purchase more in different colors from the always friendly, always accommodating staff? No. But it means no fancy coffee drinks for a while. I've only ever been to the mexicali blues in portland, I think..... When I walked in today I was worried that they'd done away with the ginormous case of jewelry that they used to display in the upper level of the store. I was hoping to get another middle finger ring, because flippin the bird is best when you have a jeweled finger. Lucky for me (and you!) they've taken over another property right across the cobblestones with even MORE semi fake hippie crunchy crap. Does this make me a fake hippy crunchy? You bet your ass it does. People of Portland Maine, rejoice! The prices are good, the sales people are very nice (even to annoying customers like yours truly) and the selection of aforementioned earthy goods is pretty nice. Wow, did I feel like I was in another place when I walked into Mexicali Blues. It is very much like a store that is a bit more local to me called Ganesh. Turns out, after chatting with some of the employees, the two owners are friends and go on buying trips together. Well, lemme say, they both have good taste. You can buy quite an assortment of good here from clothing to jewelry to house items like pillows, blankets and cabinet knobs. I'm probably a little too old to shop here, but that doesn't stop me! I like to pop in a couple times a year and I always find something fun. They sell lots of colorful (bright batiks, printed Indian silk, cotton tie-dye), comfy (flowy dresses, drawstring waists!) and affordable (most items are $30-$40) pieces. I have two summer dresses from Mexicali that always get lots of compliments. I also bought an awesome pair of pinky-purple palazzo pants here. One Christmas I bought their Thai Fisherman Pants as gifts for my sis and bro-in-law. They love them and now I want a pair too. They have accessories and some home decor items. I think the decorations are mostly suited to college dorms or a young adult's first apartment. You can buy incense by the stick and there are tons of scents to choose from. It's a fun store to check out if you're shopping in the Old Port. read more

It must be said up front that this store has been around long as I can recall and I'm 30. As I've said in other reviews, Maine is a place where quality is highly prized. Be that quality service, quality staff who provide those services, or quality products. If you provide 2 or even all 3 of these, you assure yourself a long and profitable business life. Mexicali has always had good people on staff. I don't know that I've ever been treated poorly by a staff member here. They are happy to help, offer advice, and tell you what sales are to be enjoyed that day. They don't go for the hard sell or up-sell, because the merchandise is chosen based on its ability to sell itself. If you just wish to browse or ask a question, feel free. I noticed recently they have a second store RIGHT across the street which is 3/4 dedicated to selling their various jewelry items. While I find their choice of location a tad odd, it makes sense they would have to expand to include all the items they carry. Some may find the prices a bit high for most things, but bear in mind these are (far as I can recall) all hand made goods. The purpose of the store is a detailed story worth looking up and reading. read more

I had to look really hard to find a Peace Tie Dye on a lower rack at ground level.Suggestion to the owners have an equal amount of Mens Tie Dye on display in your Portland shop then you do now.It would make a big difference for Men shopping in your store.Peace read more

Ok. If I could live in a single store, it would be here. EVERYTHING in this store is quite possibly my favorite thing on the planet. They have a huge selection of adorable dresses, incredibly cute jewelry, beautiful tapestries and a large selection of incense that smells like heaven. I love their semi new store across the street that specializes in jewelry and home goods. Make sure to check it out. Their quilts and pillows are beautiful as well. I am a HUGE fan of mexicali and the Portland location is my favorite. The owner might be the sweetest man ever. He always remembers me and makes me feel like family! Love it here. read more

Walking into Mexicali Blues is like walking through a time portal that takes you back to a 60's head shop. Almost. Tie dye, beads, music, and the scent of patchouli provide the ambiance as you squeeze your way through the racks of clothes squeezed onto the sales floor. It's a delightful place and a treat to the senses. But they must be getting their ass kicked by shoplifters because the staff will follow your every move like hound dog on a scent. Perhaps it is a bit less claustrophobic and the staff a bit less suspicious in the off season. Still, it's worth stopping in and taking a look. You never know what you might find there.. read more

The ladies behind the counter were absolutely lovely, engaging and well-versed in stone knowledge. Mexicali Blues has a few locations other than just the Portland location. They have great hats and mittens and sweaters. My kids love the jewelry and the little wooden bobble head animals. A friend gave me a hoodie sweater from Mexicali for my birthday and I wear it with jeans all the time. Their prices are very reasonable too. The people who work in the store are helpful and seem like they have a good time with the customers and with each other too. read more

I love what the store has to offer, but the customer service is by far the most degrading and rude that I've experienced in Portland. While trying on a few dresses today, I noticed two employees talking about how they used to work in the restaurant industry. As these two went on, they talked about how servers are lazy, manipulative, mean, and don't care about anything else except for getting their tip. And thats an abbreviated version of what they were talking about. It is fine to speak your feelings about an industry, but do it on your own time. By the time that I had heard all of this I was ready to leave. When leaving the fitting room they could barely break their conversation to ask me, an employee of the hospitality industry, if I liked anything. read more

Usually when you find a shop like this it's sort of a mess. Mexicali Blues was maybe one of the best organized and cleanest stores I've ever been in. Like Target level. The staff was so friendly and helpful. They really went above and beyond for us. We found a truly unique gift for my MIL here. Lots of fun clothes for all, jewelry, gifts, home decor and more. Love the style, atmosphere, and morals that are nearly synonymous with Mexicali! I was pretty disappointed on one occasion, though. I had purchased a scarf in old port from Mexicali that was intended for my mother to cover her head as she went through Chemotherapy and several of the workers at that time said it was fine to leave my already bought item behind their counters as I continued to shop the oldport and return for it later - even leaving a note on it with my name and number. I returned later only to have the same employees (and one owner) tell me they had no idea who I was or what I was talking about. I love their style and the fair trade idea but I didn't have $40 to donate. read more
