Bought an amp from this place that's supposed to sound good. The amp was sold as being "recently serviced" after waiting an additional amount of time for a 'New cap job' I finally received the amp. Upon receiving the amp I was only able to turn it up at a very low volume due to having neighbors on the other side of the wall. I got home and turned the amp up. from noon on the volume know to fully turned up nothing happens, additionally the amp does not break up nicely and sounds like trash, I tested all the tubes on two different tube testers and none of them tested 'good'. One tested 'weak' and the other five tested 'poor'. Furthermore the wires coming from the transformer to the speaker are brittle and crusty. One terminal even broke loose from the old wire. A simple chop stick test shows that the cap job has very poor soldering. there are two pieces of electricians tape on a resistor and the amp cuts out and gets fuzzy when it moves. it looks as if a middle schooler learned how to solder a few hours ago then tried to work on this amp. the tech was very incompetent and the owner is dishonest for letting a poorly fixed product be sold, then telling me I had buyers remorse because the amp I received is a pile of garbage. I wish I could leave negative stars. Watch out for this guy. this place sucks. read more

Mick was very helpful to me when I was in a very desperate time. My clarinet went to another repair shop and they didn't fix it correctly. I have been renting a clarinet for 2 months, and that's how long I haven't had my original clarinet. I gave Mick my instrument and explained the problem to him. He immediately went to work on it and in 3 days I had my clarinet back to tip-top shape like it was brand new. read more

I bought an amp that was "fully serviced" from this shop. Upon receiving it it sounded terrible. It needed 296$ worth of work from a REAL tech to get it to the condition it should have been when I received it. Ray at Merle's music is a liar. I've been there three times, each time for a different reason, and each time I've had a wonderful experience. I got my guitar restrung there and they did an excellent job with it, never felt pushed into buying anything I didn't need (Although they did recommend I should get a case since I don't have one). I'm not sure how such negative experiences could be possible, but as a musician and long time customer this is the greatest shop I've ever walked into for equipment, service, instruments, advice, or anything else music related I've needed in the last 5 years. Amazing customer service & expertise, great pricing, very impressive selection for the area, etc, etc. Rarely consider shopping anywhere else unless I'm in a serious bind, such as being out of town on a time schedule. read more

I ordered a AMI guitar from Merle's on Reverb. In the past I have spent hours in music shops searching for the right guitar, never in a million years did I think that a guitar would get sent to me perfectly set-up via UPS.. I'm not much for reviews but this AMI DT-41 is one of the best guitars I've ever played; by far the nicest playing and sounding I've owned. Merle's has fantastic options for kids wanting to start playing instruments. We've purchased instruments, paid for lessons, and had to return accessories there. Recently we had problems with the quality of an item and the staff handled it so quickly we got a replacement part, for free, within a week. Good selection, bad employees and worse prices. This place is the only store for many miles that sells instruments and they take full advantage of it. Their staff is about all about commission; they will try every trick in the book to sell things that you don't need. Do yourself a favor-make the trip to Jeff City for musical gear needs. There is a curtain way to use, and view, a small store like this in such a rural area. First off let me tell you how I use Merle's Music. I have used them twice now for repairs. Once for a pick-up change and once for a selector switch change set-up. They have great prices, $50 per hour, on repair work and so far their work is perfectly fine. However, their instrument prices are WAY above competitor's prices. example: They had a MIM Fender Telecaster Cabrinita listed for $789.99. I was able to buy the same guitar from another store for $400 and that was that store's regular price. The same guitar could be bought from ebay for about $300-375. If there is one great way to use a store like this is to go in and actually play an instrument or amp and if you like it go compare the prices of online stores like Sweetwater, Music123, Musician's Friend, or Sam Ash. read more

I feel the need to review this place again, this time on their repair section, on behalf of a late friend of mine. He spent 200 dollars on parts and labor for a guitar bridge problem he was having. They put non-functioning saddles (from a completely different bridge) on the bridge which rendered it useless. They charged him for said parts, for labor for said parts, and when confronted about it, offered to repair it for more money. The repair man here is a butcher. You're better off doing repairs yourself with a backhoe, jack hammer, and dynamite. Beware this place. Butcher my friend's guitar? Sell me a lemon vintage amp, saying it's all original, but when I get home and check it out, it's been outfitted with car speakers? I reserve my accusations for those who deserve it; these people are CROOKS. SWINDLERS. Do business with them at your own risk. read more

Merle's is just a darn good music store. I've never had a complaint about selection or service. In particular Matt is super knowledgeable on guitars and I've even had him talk me into buying a less expensive guitar because it was a better deal for me. Prices are competitive, selection is excellent. I've had them work on several guitars for me as well and the boys have always taken good care of me. read more
