If you happen to be down there anyways, come to this clean, dark, sinful, bootleggin' feelin', underground wine/liquor oasis and buy yourself a treat. Or 2.Or 5. As much as you can carry. The staff is always ready to help and I have enjoyed chatting with them all as wine is my thing. As soon as you walk in, staff will be more than eager to serve you! You may not find the exact bottle of wine or beer that you are looking for but I assure you, you will leave happy!

To be…read moreclear, the cellar is that of the old Alberta Hotel, and this brings a very historic and slightly European atmosphere to the shop. It makes your visit into an experience. The other major benefit is that they play up the wine cellar connection - indeed the storage conditions are very good for the serious bottles of wine that they keep here. I am not an Oil Baron or associate, so I lack the resources to know about the best of the best that they keep here. But they have some pretty fine wines in my ten to fifteen dollar range, and are without snobbery in helping a girl find a good (cheap) wine. I love a good wine, although I am pretty far from being an expert so it is really nice to be able to refer to the ratings they have for the wines. Any questions you might have are answered by the helpful staff, and they know their stuff! So whether you are a wine newbie or a seasoned connoisseur, the Cellar is a wonderful wine gem conveniently located in downtown Calgary. When I have time I always try to make the trip pre-dinner party.

If you have the chance to go to the Culinary Campus event during Big Taste, it is truly worth it…read more At $85/ticket, that put my expectations fairly high and I was not disappointed. Doors open at 7pm, and when you enter you are given wine glass. There are stations throughout the entire kitchen, and the chefs & culinary students are preparing each dish right in front of you. You're welcome to ask any questions about how the food is prepared. The dishes for the 2016 Big Taste event included rack of lamb, sushi, flatbread, shrimp & grits, wings & fried vegetables, lobster bisque, crab cakes, rabbit, duck confit pirogies, and ginger beef. Every singly one of these dishes was amazing. For dessert, there was a selection of chocolate mousse, creme brûlée, panna cotta, tiramisu, and banana bread pudding. I tried it all, and the dessert was a surprising let-down. The dark-chocolate mousse was hard, the panna cotta was soupy and under cooked, and the banana bread pudding was much more mushy than any bread pudding I've had. The milk chocolate mousse and creme brûlée were enjoyable. I hope the desserts are improved for next year. There were wine stations throughout the kitchen as well, with wine from several BC wineries. I think there were 6 stations, and each had a white and a red wine, and you could drink as much as your heart contents. Overall, this is a fantastic event, with amazing food. $85 is pricey, however it's such a unique experience, and you can eat & drink all you want. Definitely worth it!

Started this post back in December and just completing it now…read more.. Went here for a work/staff Xmas party and the experience was mixed. Our group came in to the commercial kitchen in the culinary campus, and the activity was to make our own dinner together. We chose a Japanese style. I have to say, it was really fun and a great variation to the typical staff Xmas party, great way to get to know your coworkers better. If it weren't for this, I'd probably give a 1 star. The bad part was the instructor. While he seemed to have decent culinary knowledge, he was quite overbearing, almost acting like he was the head chef of a large restaurant and at times spoke to us the way he might to a line cook on a busy night. I do not believe that was part of the intended experience as it was odd and unwelcome. Some of the food was fine, but the proteins, particularly the flank steak (done basically tataki style) was waaaay too salty (the instructor dressed it) and also far too many birds eye chilies making it almost inedible. Overall, the food was not great, and I don't think it was because of our staff putting it together.

While this company has this written on its website..."We pride ourselves on our customer service,…read moreknowledge in wine and hope to share our passion with others." or "Assisting customers in a professional yet friendly manner in accordance with company guidelines", I have to say that I had quite a different experience with the owner herself! A while ago I had purchase beer for a special occasion and the staff had provided me nicely with a print out explaining the beer chosen. That was so great! Today we went to purchase beer again, and requested the same thing. They said they were not doing it anymore, and only on father's day. I asked nicely if they could do an exception as we were going to a bday party, had already purchased the beer that was now at home . It was 230 pm. I was by myself in the store. They told me they were too busy and did not have enough staff to accommodate. When I said well I'm the only client here, the owner said "I don't have to account my time to you, you don't know how much work we have in the back". When " the back" is more important than a client, when this is an owner's rude response, I'm sorry but it is not great customer's service. I won't be back. There is so many of the same business in YYC that are great and wants customers...

We also had a theme. So we had the Vietnam dishes. I was in charge of making the Tom Yum Soup. It came out delicious. I really liked it. The other dishes were delicious too. Our instructor was Ching and she guided us in every step. Constantly watching how we cook. We had a great time. Everything went well. I also found out that every Friday they have couple's night cooking and Saturday they have classes for kids. At the end, I have to say it was fun. If you bring your own wine its cheaper but they have to pour the alcohol for you. Great team building event.

It is sometimes busy in there but line ups are generally not long. I inquired about French cooking classes and online ordering. They are first class and very professional…read more I first got introduced to their school when I went to listen to an evening presentation by THIERRY MERET -- CHEF DE CUISINE and MARNIE FUDGE -- PASTRY CHEF regarding their cooking classes overseas in France. This was pre covid and I still plan to go when they restart the overseas programs. At the presentation we sampled wine, appetizers and dessert. Beautifully pared and delicious. They made it so interesting and exciting I decided to take some of their classes in January, 2021. I signed up for 7 classes - Knife Skills, Cooking 101 (4 Classes), Stocks & Sauces and Made In France. My two favourite types of cooking are French and Asian. Needless to say I am very excited! Their in person classes are always small 10-12 people maximum so you get a lot of personal attention. Their cooking class area is so capturing the atmosphere of working in a professional cooking environment. They make it so educational, interesting, fun and motivational. Can't wait to get started! If you are interested in cooking check them out. You won't regret it. https://www.cuisineandchateau.com/

And if what I've seen at Cuisine et Chateau is held at any standard of quality and excellence, then the food scene of YYC is very much alive and well. Hidden away in Kensington deep in a building shared with a tanning salon and a cafe, the Cuisine et Chateau awaits all comers who want to learn beyond the normal menus. I have to admit, it's a nice cozy place that just exudes the charm of a parisian kitchen, complete with brick walls and clean steel. Chef Thierry Meret of Le P'tite Table and La Chaumiere holds court here with Pastry Chef Marnie Fudge. Combined, the two bring a well rounded excellence and education to the students, and I can see why. At this particular event I was attending, I was given a taste of an excellent quinoa salad with grilled shrimp, replete with lemon tones and flavours. Matched with the paired wines, the dish was simply refreshing, bright and well, yummy. Needless to say, I did enjoy it immensely. It's a great introduction to the food, and an especially good indicator. A particularly nice touch is how they've made the lessons specialized for the time, style, and interests. Want to learn how to develop knife skills? They got that. How about how to make a great french of italian dish in 40 min during your lunch break? There's that. Or how about a field trip so you can cure and smoke your own meats? It's all there, and you can find out more by going to their website. I have a $120 gift certificate myself, and I'm stuck trying to figure out what I want to learn! 1 of the Yelp 100 Challenge

This location has been in Inglewood for how many months now and it's still unrated?! Lucky me!…read more I was in the area this morning for a job so I stopped in to grab some of the many seasonal beers they've brought in. The size of this store seems slightly larger than the 16th Ave store. I'm not sure if the selection is any bigger here, but it does seem less crammed in. As with the 16th Ave store they line up all of their new brews at the end of the counter so they're easy to spot when you walk in the door. They also mark the shelves with a red tag so you can quickly fill your basket. The guy working was knowledgeable. I asked him about a brewery I never tried and his response was "They're ok". However the way he said it and his body language meant "Don't waste your money". That said it all. One of the new things they're doing with their beers is a "pick 6". They have a couple of shelves in the cooler where they've broken up a bunch of craft brewery six packs so you can mix and match between the breweries. Now you're not pegged into buying an entire 6'er to try something new that you may not be sure about. The shelves are organized by style which makes it even easier to mix your choices.
