About 2 months ago, my mother was getting into a cab after getting groceries. As she was still…read moregetting into the cab (Newfound Cabs), the driver decided to drive off. She fell out of the cab. Thankfully the driver wasn't going too fast. She was slightly bruised and she was in some pain. Thankfully, She didn't hit her head and nothing was broken. The driver did apologize but she has heard nothing from the cab company. I spoke with Paul, the manager, who assured me that he would offer anything we needed. I thought some complimentary cab rides would be ok. But Paul hasn't responded. When I text, he promises me he'll get back to me the next day. He never does. This has been 2 months now. I didn't think free cab rides was unreasonable. So now I take it to the court of public opinion. Let's spread the word on how they don't seem to care about the elderly.

At the botanical garden they have a priority # and they called a cab to pick us up and take us to a local cemetery. When we needed picked up the cemetery I was on hold for at least 10 min. Then I had to figure out an address since the cemetery doesn't have a house number. Took over 30 min to get a taxi to The Rooms. From there it was all downhill. Essential service when traveling in St. John's for a short trip and with a small group. For just…read more$55 (adult) for two days, you get driven from Downtown to all the key tourist destinations like Signal Hill, the Geo Centre, Quidi Vidi, The Rooms, and Cape Spear Lighthouse. You can hop on and hop off at any point. They make a stop at each of these locations each hour until around 3 pm each day (check their schedule on their site or grab a pamphlet at their booth). You'll find their first pickup stop right in front of the Alt Hotel and that's where you can also buy a ticket. We stumbled across them while walking by, initially considering Ubering to our destinations, but after comparing the prices, this seemed worthwhile. For reference, an Uber ride to Cape Spear from Downtown is $40 one way, so it seems like a no-brainer to use this service for a couple or small group, especially if you're not using a rental car. The driver also acts as a tour guide while driving across town, providing a bit of history. Coincidentally, Bobby was our driver both days; each time we hopped on, it was him, and he was friendly and added to the enjoyment of our ride to the destination.

Three stars for the establishment; FIVE stars for the staff!…read more Located at the upper end of Gower Street, the hostel is central to just about EVERYWHERE in downtown St. John's. The rooms are Spartan, the accoutrements few: Our room was furnished with a bunk bed (with room for two below and one above), a dresser, a fan, and a trash can. The trash can was useful to prop the window open, as the sash was broken. The nearer bathroom was one floor down, and the other was next to the kitchen, three floors below our room. There is, however, free WiFi. That said, it is a hostel, and a pretty nice one at that! The rooms were CLEAN; the bathrooms well-stocked, and the kitchen had more than enough plates, bowls and tableware for all to use. Speaking of the kitchen, they had signs posted in at least 25 languages asking people PLEASE to do their own dishes. While we were there, there must have been a person or two that did not speak any of those... but that wasn't the hostel's fault. Oh, there is also a laundry facility on the second floor - one washer and one dryer, for a "twoonie" each. While the hostel itself was certainly adequate, what made it WONDERFUL was the staff. Anastasia (Anna), Haley, Erin, and - I'm so sorry I've forgotten the name of the young man with all of the ink - were splendid! They were warm, helpful, and just loaded with great ideas regarding where to go, what to do, what to see, where to eat, etc. All in all, this is a good hostel staffed by wonderful people. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again!

Central to everything in downtown St. John's. I was able to hike up to Signal Hill on Thanksgiving (Canadian) morning, and it wasn't too far away. Our group was scheduled to arrive when no one was available to check us in, but the door code was sent beforehand and instructions were left in a mailbox. I stayed in a co-ed bedroom and accommodations seem on par with past hostels I've stayed at (and there have been many!). And being a hostel veteran, I always wear a sleeping mask and mp3 player to sleep. Came in handy when a couple guys arrived late from a night out. Slept right through when they came back! Although it was funny hearing them talk whether they remembered the night before when I came back to the room after my Signal Hill hike.
