Unfortunately, places like this are becoming more and more scarce, which is pretty ironic…read moreconsidering how many dudes are heading to bars to watch UFC in silly t-shirts that look like they've just had their asses whooped by an 8-year old girl armed with a bejeweller. For countless millennia, our species has survived in part because men have testosterone pumping through their collective veins, enabling them to be aggressive and violent, to hunt for food and to protect their families. Over the past 150 years these qualities have become woefully redundant. Sadly, anger management courses, some sensitivity training and a few yoga classes are a laughable effort towards finding a healthy outlet for these hormonal tendencies which have been hardwired into men for millennia as a means towards ensuring our collective existence. If for no other reason than for providing such an effective outlet for this hardwired aggression which has recently become a hindrance rather than a boon, Kel Lee's deserves 5 stars... ...But wait! There's more! Kel Lee's is one of the most inclusive, accepting, and respectful environments you're ever going to walk into. I have been to all kinds of gyms and fitness clubs and this, after one class of getting to know the people and the environment, is not at all intimidating. The culture is of people who are there to learn and train, no more, no less. Yes, it's mostly men, and they're mostly 24-35, but there is a liberal sprinkling of everyone else you could imagine as well, and everyone is both welcomed and accommodated. However, be warned: this is not a school for the weak, who will be generally culled. This is a competitive school which trains fighters. You will be put into full contact situations probably earlier than you think you will. You will experience pain, and you will receive (minor) injuries. While the doors are open to all, I can see a lot of people after one week or even one class saying, "This is just not for me." If you're looking to come once or twice a week for a little exercise and camaraderie, that's fantastic, but if you're really looking to push yourself, practice serious discipline, blow off a lot of steam, and learn a lot about martial arts and fighting in a safe, serious environment, then welcome.

If you're looking to learn joint locks, this is one of the best places to go in the area. Michael Seamark Kyoshi is one of the most proficient joint lock masters I've ever met in any style of Jujutsu. That being said, do not walk in there expecting to master this art in a few months. Joint locks are still a fine motor skill, and it takes a lot of training to be able to use them practically in self defense situations. Seamark Kyoshi does, however, have efficient teaching methods for imparting this knowledge and a friendly, welcoming training atmosphere. He also offers training in law enforcement oriented techniques, being an Advanced Security Training instructor with years of experience as a security professional. In addition to having some of the most painful joint locking techniques I've ever experienced, Seamark Kyoshi is also a skilled shiatsu practitioner, with training in the art a requirement at the higher levels of the style of KoKoDo Jujutsu. Under his skilled hands I have personally received treatment which accelerated the healing of a muscle pull I had. I have never tried the yoga at this school, taught by Diane Seamark, but I have heard good things about it.

As…read moresomeone with no prior martial arts experience, I thought Giju and the group/class were welcoming, friendly, supportive, and encouraging. Giju seems genuinely invested in helping students succeed at their own pace. The training is challenging enough to push me outside my comfort zone, but not in an intimidating way. The classes keep me wanting to come back even after a tough class, instead of just giving up completely. The class atmosphere feels safe, positive, and supportive, making it an excellent option for beginners who may feel hesitant about starting martial arts. It feels like a comfortable space to learn, a "no-judgement zone"! The studio itself is spacious, filled with natural light, and equipped with plenty of training equipment suitable for various skill levels. There is also ample free parking in the plaza, and the location is easily accessible by transit with nearby bus stops across the studio. Traffic in the area is generally manageable as well (quiet during midday). If you're looking for a martial arts school that balances challenging training with a supportive and welcoming community, I highly recommend Isshindo!
