Metra UP North Line - Clybourn station

Metra UP North Line

A few of the reviews are strange, just because I've never had any overly terrible experiences…read moreriding this line. It's the norm once in a rare while for a train to be terribly late, and other than one really bad experience I had waiting for a train a couple years ago to go to Kenosha(over 30 mins. late, and had to switch platforms), haven't had any probs riding this line otherwise. Only thing is that certain stations on this line are aging and could use improvement(especially Clybourn), though at least Ravenswood is finally getting an overdue renovation. And there are stations in worser shape(i.e. Metra Electric's 63rd-111th St. stops, and the stops on the Blue Island ME branch). Nice too that there is a late afternoon train from Waukegan to Chicago that makes limited stops on both Saturday and Sunday on the schedule. As once when I was coming back from Waukegan, that train saved my butt and allowed me to meet up with a friend successfully, without being late(barely).

The Metra UP North line is very convenient, a very affordable way to get from the Northern burbs…read moreinto Chicago. The trains are clean, the schedule is good, they run pretty on time. I'm coming from Milwaukee, and the Kenosha station shuts down early. In fact, there are no late Amtrak trains, or any bus coming from Milwaukee to Chicago, even the airport shuttle shut down early evening. So the best way to get into the Windy from Beer Town later in the evening is to beg some good friend to drive me to Waukegan, and take the Metra UP North line into Chicago, and most points from the Near North to Downtown are better served by getting off at Clybourne and hitching an Uber (if I have more money) or shifting to the CTA (if I have more time). You can now buy a Metra train ticket online (download the Ventra application) and have your ticket on your phone like a plane ticket. The Metra trains have working outlets to charge your phone en route.

We decided to ride the Metra train to downtown Chicago to go to the Art Institute of Chicago. The…read moreMetra train is the way to go. Since I was a tourist in my hometown, we went inside to buy train tickets since I don't have the app on my phone. If I was a regular rider, you can buy cheaper monthly passes, etc. The lady in the ticket booth was very friendly and helpful and loved her job. I love that! We bought two one way tickets for each of us for a total of $27, so that works out to just $6.75 one way. You couldn't drive there for that! Just from passing by all the other stations, I think the Roselle Station is one of the biggest and nicest. The conductors on both legs of the trip were nice. On the afternoon return trip, we didn't know it but we sat in the quiet car. Hubby thought the conductor was joking but I took a pic to show him it's a real thing. Upon our return in the afternoon we were surprised to find a white envelope marked "Violation Notice." Bummer, we hadn't seen any signs or kiosks telling us we needed to pay for parking. We saw some front spots with numbers on them and thought maybe regular riders paid a small fee to have a spot up front but had no clue everyone has to pay. Upon going online to pay for my parking ticket I found out that if you pay cash at the kiosk it's $1.50, or $1.80 by credit card. My ticket was for $35.00 if I paid it before the due date or $70.00 if I paid it after the due date. Ouch! It's so fun to ride the train!

It's a train station. You wait, a train arrives, and you're whisked away…read more The few times I've been here were on the weekends when the station building wasn't open, so I can't really review the inside of the station (yet). I hear there's a pretty decent coffee shop inside and I've been waiting to check it out, but now I'm confused as to whether or not it's still open (note to self: I probably should have checked before I posted this review but it was sitting my drafts for months and I just wanted to post it!). Trains are usually on time. Scrolling marquee signs work well. Parking isn't too ridiculous -- you enter the parking lot from Lawrence Ave. and it's a short walk across the tracks to the platform. You can also drop off in the front of the station off Irving Park Road. I live incredibly close, so I just walk here when I need to use the train. All aboard!
