AN OPEN LETTER TO CHIEF BATISTA, MESA POLICE DEPT:
December 7, 2018
Dear Chief Batista:
In the course of ordinary business this letter is nowhere near important enough to justify addressing it to you, but this is not ordinary business.
This past year your Department has come under intense scrutiny for a number of criminal violations involving the treatment and civil rights of the citizens of Mesa, including at least one unprovoked murder.
This past Tuesday I became another victim of your department's bullying.
While investigating a minor fender-bender involving myself in one car and two young girls in another, your officer Carroll, badge # 14352, spent some 45 minutes interviewing the two girls. He was polite, patient, understanding and all-around professional.
After dismissing them, he approached me and asked what happened. No sooner had I begun speaking, when he interrupted me and proceeded to finish telling the story. When I said, "Well, that wasn't what I was going to say," he again interrupted and asked for my story. Again, I had barely begun speaking when he interrupted me a second time and finished the story, along with "isn't that right?" When I responded, "No, that's not right. I'll tell you what happened, if you'll let me speak without interrupting." With that, he flew into a rage and screamed, "That's it! You're getting a ticket!"
He never did get my statement of the events leading up to the accident. By the time he finished writing out the ticket, he was in a full-tilt, out of control anger frenzy. That elevated into a shouting match between us, which continued for several minutes in a strip mall parking lot. While I kept reminding him he cut off my answers twice, he threatened to use his collar-mounted audio recorder against me. "You know, everything you say is being recorded?" He refused to answer my questions regarding the citation, his name, badge # or other indicia.
I implore you to listen to this tape, before you rush to judgment that this bellowing monster was acting within the scope of his authority.
This overweight, unshaven, 6th-grade educated, feral animal does not define "peace officer". What you're calling a police force is nothing more than a lethal pack of wild animals, who enjoy intimidating people and watching them suffer under their collective thumbs of oppression. How you can let this escalate to four observed events within a one-year period is beyond anyone's calculation.
Mr. Batista, do you care? When - if ever - were any of these rogue cops provided training in working with the public? Does any facet of your training, besides how to shoot and beat up people, include recognizing lack of emotional maturity or self-control in the heat of passion among your department members? read more
