Healthy cupcakes! An oxymoron made real. I was pleasantly surprised to meet vegan cupcakes without the dense mash that characterizes other vegan "desserts". Merry cupcakes manage to preserve the fluffiness of non-vegan cupcakes despite being more moist. The cupcakes need to be sweet to offset the bitter customer service...
Merry Cupcakes tries to incorporate real fruits and vegetables wherever possible, such as avocado in their chocolate frosting. They reduced the amount of sugar to prevent the sugar high and subsequent crash yet left just enough sugar to make it as sweet as normal cupcakes. I had 3 large and 1 mini cupcakes in one sitting without slipping into a food coma (reactive hypoglycemia). Lemon vanilla, beetroot devil's food, sticky date and chocolate avocado were equally delicious.
They also make gluten-free cupcakes on Fridays and Saturdays, though I haven't tried one yet.
Minus two stars for the grouchy service by the ladies at the counter who would rather surf the web and chat with each other than answer a customer's questions about their product. I would have bought more cupcakes had they not soured my experience. They ignored me even though I was the only customer in the store (and I didn't even look or smell like a bum). How awkward!
When I finally got their attention, they displayed zero enthusiasm for the cupcakes, supplying only curt replies with thinly veiled exasperation. The "merry" in Merry Cupcakes did not apply to them. Sorry, little miss muffets, but you need to get those tuffets out of your arses and actually do some work. Better yet, get out of customer service altogether, because it's certainly not where ice queens belong.
Thankfully, I later found a little FAQ flyer near the register and some more info online that gave me more useful tidbits about the bakery, its history and its process. read more
