When she left, she offered to email us a few stock floorplans, but that's been a week and a half and she never emailed them. Oddly enough, she never inquired as to our basic needs in a home, such as number of family members, bedrooms, etc. We feel that we've been slighted due to our budget, even though she told us that she does a number of small projects. Long before we commissioned Jinny for her services, we hired a contractor to redesign the front yard landscape. The contractor suggested that terraced retaining walls and wood stairs with railings would compliment the home. We found his vision to be agreeable, thus he began breaking ground. He assured us that we no longer needed to actively involve ourselves, and that every remaining aspect of the project would be handled and secured by him. Unfortunately, our faith in him was misguided and cost us. As he finished the project, we received a "Notice of Violation" via the city's construction department for lack of requisite building permits. Suffice it to say, we were confounded that the contractor proceeded and finished the job by questionable means. We had no recourse against the dubious contractor, but our luck began to turn when we discovered Jinny through a colleague of hers. The minute we sat down and briefed her of our vexing situation, and while observing her problem-solving acumen, we at last felt as though there was light at the end of the tunnel. She devised a clear and concise plan to remediate the issue with the city that would serve to ultimately close our project. Thrust into a less than ideal situation, her resolve instilled confidence, which was refreshing, especially in the wake of the consternation we experienced prior to meeting Jinny. She attacked our project head on, shouldering all of the responsibilities, including but not limited to -- site plan drawings and revisions, correspondence with city reviewers and inspectors, and maintaining a constant line of communication with us every step of the way. It was by virtue of her attentive nature, expert knowledge of her field, and relentless pursuit that we had at last obtained the city's approval and finalized our project. We cannot speak of Jinny Park highly enough. I've been a designer and fabricator of furniture and sculpture for over forty-five years, so it wasn't difficult to start developing ideas. As I dreamed I began looking around for assistance with the process, and found Artisans Group. I didn't go to Artisans Group looking for an industry-leading eco-home. I came because I saw a couple of their projects and loved the clean modern style Tessa Smith and Randy Foster were putting together. They were realizing designs that seemed to me to be far beyond what other design/build groups were creating. Architecture has been a fascination most of my life, and what I saw in the lines and volumes Tessa was producing was a natural feel for proportions, for minimal and unique details, for the flow of life patterns in a home, and particularly for the play of light, natural and artificial, as it enhances and defines spaces and the experience of living. With Tessa and Artisans I got all of that plus a great experience of collaboration in design, and a house that always surprises me--because it is somehow more "me" than I would have designed by myself. It's a "world house," designed with details and technological solutions that are distinctly European and soundly ecological in a way that just makes sense. The house stays at comfortable temperatures with the air always fresh while using a tenth of the energy of my last house. The biggest surprise was when I moved in and found the experience to be more physically comfortable than I would have--or could have--imagined. The house seems to have its own body temperature, and wears like a glove. The Jewel Box (as we nick-named it during the design process) was designed to be a home and gallery. It has become a museum of my life's work and remains so comfortable and inspiring that I stay home wondering why I would want to be anywhere else.
