Once upon a time, I lived just 6 minutes from this gem. Now I live 45 minutes away, and I still make the trip. Why? Because walking into this place is my version of therapy. Yes, I'm the weirdo who openly sniffs the books. No, I'm not sorry. The selection is outstanding. I won't swear they have every genre under the sun, but I will say I've never left empty-handed--and I read everything from thoughtful nonfiction to weird fiction to "why is this cover so dramatic?" suspense novels. They've also got a fantastic large print section, which makes me look like a great daughter when I stock up for my mom. (Let's ignore that I walk out with twice as many for myself.) The staff? And in a blasted ruin of a downtown, with many buildings obviously boarded up for decades, I found the best used bookstore I've ever seen. We were in NF on vacation, and in planning the day's travel, I thought, eh, let's check out the local bookstores. So we planned on stopping here for a half hour before moving on to a couple of museums. I won't go into huge detail -- just read the reviews below for the friendliness of the owner, the sheer size of the place, and how it's organized -- or belabor bits like me wearing a sweatshirt my mother gave me 20+ years ago extolling books and cats, and the owner gleefully pointing out the T-shirt on display with the exact same logo HIS mother gave to HIM 20+ years ago. But the selection is gargantuan, and we only covered the first two floors. Just the new books and fiction sections cleaned out our discretionary budget for the trip, and we went well over it to boot. See, for one thing, the prices are staggering: used paperbacks go for a dollar or two apiece, prices I haven't seen for a couple decades at least. I got two almanacs for $5 apiece, one from 1959 and one from 1947. Picked out a new book for my wife for her upcoming birthday, and the owner giftwrapped it for me. So anyway: we wound up buying over $200 worth of books. Far, far too many for us to carry home on the train. No problem: the owner boxed them up for shipping, and we received them today, only three days after we bought them. He said he does a lot of business online, and is willing to look for books on his shelves and ship them. We likely won't get back to the area for a couple years, and will absolutely take advantage of this. I could not recommend this establishment more highly. (Really, folks, don't fret about the location: it's directly across the street from the police station.)
