There's not much of a town centre here -- just a tiny row of eateries and shops in a two-story wooden building fronting the harbour -- and Bermagui Gelati Clinic is on the southernmost end. The space used to be a veterinary clinic, and rather than waste money on a new sign, the owners must've just decided to name their business in such a way that they could repurpose the sign. It's pretty funny cuz you can very clearly see where "Veterinary" has been marked out and replaced with "Gelati." Inside, it's bright and cozy, with a few chairs, but it's much nicer to sit outside. They have a few vegan (non-dairy) options available. I went with feijoa for the novelty factor because I'd never seen feijoa ice cream before (and because feijoa ANYTHING isn't really popular outside New Zealand). It was good, but the tartness of the feijoa got a little old after awhile. Definitely a flavour to mix with something less tart to give your taste buds a bit of a break. Out front, they have some nice tables and chairs with a pleasant view onto the boats in the harbour. At the rear (where the carpark is), there are also some big comfy chairs you can sink into and enjoy your gelato, but the view from the front is much nicer. Nothing amazing here, but worth a stop if you're in Bermagui and have a sweet tooth. Note that the place is cash-only (at least, it was when we were there).

You know you're about to be transported to a sunny beach in Italy when you walk into Bermagui…read moreGelati Clinic and hear owners Francesca and Alberto chatting away to a customer in fluent Italian. Featured in the 2010 and 2011 SMH Good Food Guide, the Bermagui Gelati Clinic is an ice cream lovers wonderland. I visited three times during my five day stay in the area, and each time there were at least six new and interesting gelati to try. Along with more traditional flavours, you can find orange, carrot and ginger, red grape, dried fig, chai tea, chia seeds, lemon, lime and bitters, dates, pecan cinnamon, honey and ginger, and rhubarb. Out of the 12 that I indulged in (6 of my own, 6 stolen from my boyfriend), the standout was Campari and pomelo (grapefruit). A burst of citrisy goodness, more tangy than tart, followed by a warmth from the Campari that hits the back of your throat. Absolutely divine. The runner up for me was the cumquat. As a lover of the really bitter marmalades, the overwhelming tartness of the cumquat literally left my tongue tingling. I could see how this may not be everyone's favorite though. Other recommendations include lime, red grape, watermelon and chilli chocolate, where smooth chocolate is followed by chilli hitting the back of your throat about 4 seconds after you take your first lick. The gelato machinery imported from Italy combined with the talents of two dedicated gelato engineers is a tantalising taste experience for any foodie. A must visit. As many times as you can.
