That is, with the exception of a nature preschool that was hiking through the snowy woods, playing and exploring as they went. I was informed later that Door County (or perhaps the town or state) subsidizes nature preschool, so anyone who wants to attend can attend for free. I love that! Apparently, this preschool uses the sanctuary as one of their spots to learn outdoors. I did a lot of learning as I explored Ridges Sanctuary, as well. I started off at the nature center and checked out their little exhibit area, which shows information about Bailey's Harbor and the critters, flora and fauna that call the area home. The 1,600-acre natural preserve has five miles of trails and bridges that lead to the Bailey's Harbor Range Lights. One cool thing about the park is that it has a wooden boardwalk that is ADA-compliant and accessible for people who use wheelchairs. The boardwalk is wide and even, and it will take you all around the park, and even to to a spot with great views of the lighthouse. The preserve grounds and nature center are free, so this is definitely a great place to visit when you're in Door County.

It's definitely more of a park than a beach. Come at sunset and the ambiance is just lovely and everyone seemed to really respect the area. There aren't many benches or places to sit so you may find yourself standing for a bit to watch the sunset. If you're feeling adventurous, you can climb around the barrier to walk down and sit on the stone shore for a more intimate view. Very romantic place for our anniversary!

It is an amazing spot to catch the sunset over the bay, read a book, write, meditate, chat, etc! It is not a beach in the sense of warm, golden sand between your toes; however, there is a path that leads you to the water's edge. Parking can be a bit tight on the small road so I suggest parking a little further away and walking, especially in the warm weather months. A Door County gem!

On our most recent visit in…read moreSeptember of 2021, all of Door County was more crowded than usual for mid-September and so we weren't surprised to find the parking lot by the new visitor center completely full. We went around the corner to the old, now unmarked, parking area and found the signs to the trails were still there! Yay! We assumed it was still OK to park here, and the signs provided some reassurance. The park is as peaceful as ever, and they have now finished the restoration of one of the lighthouses and are letting visitors in. The late fall wildflowers were lovely. Don't miss this peaceful place for a woodsy walk in Door County.

Wow, do you want a hike and/or a view? Peninsula State Park won't disappoint you. Eagle Tower is…read moretruly extraordinary; the wood tower itself is beautiful and unique but the view is absolutely gorgeous. They've build a very long, safe ramp for easier access for those who can't /don't want to go up the steep steps. You definitely want to wear decent walking shoes or hiking boots depending on what you're planning on doing. A lot of the hiking is labeled very appropriately. What's marked as "Very Difficult" is VERY DIFFICULT! A lot of steep ups and downs with many tall, exposed roots. Lovely rock formations, brilliant nature and areas to creep off onto the rocky shore. Definitely trust the signs and wear the right shoes. Absolutely worth the work!

We don't usually hang out on the beach when we visit, because it is usually crowded with families, and that's just not our vibe, but we will hike. It's a scenic park, and a nice place to take pictures of the lake and the shoreline. Not my favorite of the Door County State Parks, but definitely worth a visit. 25/2024

Newport State Park is located toward the topmost point of the Door County peninsula…read more We stopped by on a day when we decided to drive the length of the peninsula. It actually had somehow escaped my attention that there are multiple state parks in Door County. I knew of and have visited and camped in Peninsula State Park but hadn't heard of Newport State Park. It's a beautiful state park with both beachy and woodsy areas. The coolest thing that i wished I'd known sooner on our recent trip to Door County is that it's been designated an International Dark Sky Park. Star gazing in the rich splendor of Door County? This is your spot.
