Platinum Ridge has completely ruined my enjoyment of cherries. I used to love cherries, any kind…read more As long as they were kinda ripe, I'd put them in my face. Finding a pair of cherries linked together was a great opportunity for cherry earrings (yes, I'm almost 30, what of it?). But then my good pal Liz P "rented" a cherry tree for the 2012/13 season at Platinum Ridge and I tasted the fattest, sweetest, darkest cherries I'd ever eaten in my life. I also got the experience of picking these cherries myself. I'm going to admit right now that I didn't even know what a cherry tree looked like prior to our picking day in January, but you'd better believe that now I can spot a cherry tree from at least a hundred paces. We picked so many damn cherries that day that we ended up with just shy of 20kg of cherries (from two trees because apparently Liz P's tree was looking a little sad so they gave us a second for free), which is a ridiculous amount to share between four people. We all got home and started googling recipes that used fresh cherries and over the course of the next three weeks (they kept amazing for THREE WEEKS in the fridge; I filled my vegetable crisper and I am not exaggerating) we were making cherry juice, cherry ice-cream, cherry biscuits, cherry scones, cherry cocktails, cherry cherry cherry. Renting a cherry tree cost Liz P $95 and Platinum Ridge advises that you should get around a 10kg yield from one tree. If you can't make it out to the orchard during the picking window (around three weeks in January), the orchard will pick your cherries for you but you'll only get a 2kg box. It's a real DIY effort (and it TOTALLY pays off). Platinum Ridge is increasing the 2013/14 rental fee to $110 per tree, but I'd suggest splitting the cost with a couple of friends because you really don't need to eat 10kg of cherries in three weeks all by yourself. Then make a day of the picking--take out a picnic (cherries for dessert). But I maybe recommend not doing any of this. Stay away from Platinum Ridge. Here's why: I bought some other cherries last weekend and they were ripe and they were nice and all but they weren't Platinum Ridge. Cherries will never be the same again.

I wanted to write some kind of witty review, but Mem R. beat me to it…read more Let's just say, if you like cherries, rent a damn cherry tree so you can roll around in excess cherries and shove them all in your mouth for one month of the year. It's worth it.

This Sunday farm market in Hobart's CBD is a very vibrant market. There are lots of produce stands,…read morevarious pastries, raw oysters, different ethnic food, and local items, and coffee stands. I wish I could have tasted everything, but we only got to try few things. If I lived here I would be here every Sunday.

Established in 2009, the market was born out of a vision by founder Madi Peattie, who sought to connect local farmers directly with the community. The market began as a small gathering of farmers and food producers but quickly grew in popularity as both locals and tourists appreciated the quality and variety of goods available. Today, it is home to a diverse range of vendors offering everything from organic fruits and vegetables to Tasmanian honey, cheeses, fresh seafood, baked goods, and more. We strolled through stalls and chatted with friendly vendors eager to share the stories behind their products, and enjoy samples of local favorites. We found... Mother of Pearl Sweeties and this is a must-visit for cookie lovers. We tried the red velvet cheesecake cookie, and let me tell you, it was perfection! The cookie itself had that classic red velvet flavor, rich but not too sweet, with a beautiful, creamy cheesecake filling in the center. It was just the right balance of flavors--soft, a little decadent, and so satisfying. I could easily have eaten ten of these. If you're in Hobart and at the market, do yourself a favor and pick one up!

MONA's grassy knoll has come to life on Saturdays in summer. From 11am until 4pm every Saturday,…read morenot only will you be able to explore the cave of wonder that is the Museum of Old and New Art, but you'll also be able to score yourself some delicious brunch, lunch or afternoon tea from a wide selection of stalls that form MoMa, AKA the MONA Market. I'm leaning toward the food aspect of the market because I haven't been overwhelmed by an abundance of other offerings when I've visited. There's a great play corner for the kids, but I don't have any of those, so it's not relevant to me. There's a milk crate massage stall (don't worry, you just sit on the milk crate while someone massages you), some beautiful pottery that's way out of my price range, and other bits and bobs... but I think the drawcard really is the food and drink on offer. My favourite stall this year is by far the 21st Amendment, AKA the gin bar, followed closely by whatever food takes my lunch-fancy at the time. I highly recommend the Pop Dogs. Once you've got your hands full, take a seat on one of the bright pink beanbags and enjoy Mr Ritchie's crazy musical curation, whatever it may be at the time. (Take an umbrella or a hat for sunny days, because there's no shade on the lawn.)

Running throughout summer, this is the ideal spot to duck out for a break when wondering the MONA…read moregallery. The food stalls are brilliant, had some excellent quail, tacos and even a wallaby burger (yes, that's a lot of food but I was sharing!). There's also live music and some entertainment for kids if you require that. Personally I'm all about the food!
