It is neither quaking, nor bridged, nor particularly Quaker, though I did feel a strange spiritual calm while waiting in line at Auntie Anne's, watching dough be twisted into symbols of carbohydrate comfort. Inside, time folds in on itself like a pair of clearance khakis. There are stores selling perfume, gadgets, jeans tight enough to restrict original thought. There's a Cheesecake Factory, which exists on the same moral plane as purgatory: vast, overlit, and full of folks trying to remember what it was they came in for. The mall is clean. The ceilings are high. The escalators move up and down like Sisyphus with a corporate sponsor. No one seems to know why they're there, but they are, floating from JC Penney to Old Navy in a retail daze. The air smells faintly of artificial scents and unspoken longing. There's something poetic about a mall in the 21st century. A living fossil. A place where you can still see teenagers in small herds, clutching bubble tea and dreams. Where old men power-walk past Forever 21, defiant in orthopedic sneakers. Where the Apple Store shines like a sterile shrine to tech-assisted distraction. Three stars. Not because it's bad; it's not. It is precisely what it claims to be: a mall. A decent one. One with enough stores to feel like you might find something, even if you don't know what you're looking for. It would get four stars if it had a decent bookstore. It would get five if it could answer why I felt slightly lonelier when I left than when I arrived.

Marketfair Mall in Princeton feels like a small miracle of survival in the digital age, a place…read morethat is neither packed to the rafters nor echoingly abandoned like so many malls that have gone gently into that good night. It is comfortably alive, which is more than can be said for much of modern retail. The Barnes and Noble alone is reason enough to show up. It is a proper bookstore where you can wander, browse, and briefly pretend the internet isn't actively murdering print media. I also enjoy the little AMC theater, which is perfectly fine as long as you are seeing a movie that does not demand the thunder and spectacle of IMAX. Sometimes a modest screen, a bag of popcorn and a plush recliner are more than enough. The place is rarely crowded, which makes errands feel less like combat and more like a calm agreement between shoppers and time itself. That said, I am hoping something interesting eventually replaces the recently shuttered Bahama Breeze. The space feels like it wants to be fed a new idea. Time will tell whether that happens. Four stars for being pleasant, functional, and quietly resisting extinction. In this era, that feels like an accomplishment.

I came into the store to complete an exchange. When I approached the register, I was greeted--or rather, not greeted--by a cashier named Ronnie. She did not acknowledge me, make eye contact, or return my polite "hello." I let it go at first, assuming she may have been busy or having a long day. However, the encounter quickly escalated when I asked a clarifying question about the pricing on the items involved in the exchange. Rather than offering assistance or explanation, Ronnie abruptly responded, "The computer doesn't lie," in a tone that was both dismissive and unnecessarily sharp. Given the size of my transaction, I attempted to calmly ask for more information. However, Ronnie continued to speak to me in a condescending manner, which only heightened the discomfort of the exchange. At that point, another cashier named Wendy, who had overheard the conversation, asked if everything was okay. I shared that I was feeling uncomfortable and condescended to. Instead of listening or offering support, Wendy abruptly jumped to Ronnie's defense and began speaking to me in the same disrespectful tone. It was two employees doubling down on unkindness in a public space--without a manager in sight. What should have been a straightforward transaction turned into a distressing and frankly humiliating ordeal. I left the store feeling shaken and disrespected, not only by the unprofessionalism of the staff, but also by the apparent lack of basic customer service standards.

This is the largest shopping center I've been to, and while they do have good stores, it's almost overwhelming how it's set up. For example, you have Target and Michaels on one corner. Drive a little bit to another side, and you have Dollar Tree, Sally Beauty on another corner. Drive to a third corner, and you go to Five Below PetSmart, HomeGoods. Drive more to another corner, and you get the idea. The stores are in all different parts, that you have to drive around to get from one store to the other. You cannot walk, unless if you want to take over your life, and cross US-1. Great stores. Not great layout.

We were ignored until another couple came in and said something, then the man working, rudely told them to wait. They left. we would have too, but there was a ring we wanted to see, we sat down, waiting to be acknowledged. We waited at least ten minutes, still no one said anything to us as they continued their personal conversations with no wrap up in sight. We left to shop elsewhere. When we came back a half an hour later, The man wasn't busy, but as soon as we walked in, he immediately got on his phone, and used several swear words while speaking loudly to whomever was on the other end. We were once again ignored. We looked up the ring ourselves, but decided we didn't want it from that location because we were so disgusted with his lack of decorum, and no heed of customer service. We have been to several Kay jewelry stores and this one is the worst. I hope corporate sees this and gives that associate corrective action, he just lost your company our business and I'm sure we are not alone.

Silly Rabbit, the buying decision comes later... usually after the customer gets to see it. Zero people in the store on a Monday - me showered, shaved and fortified with extra deodorant and bottle blonde Beatrix (she looked like a Beatrix anyway) is playing hard to get, expecting the inventory to miraculously sell itself. I'm not Jeff Bezos and never did get in on the GameStop craze but I definitely have the look of someone (most of the time) who can swing a bracelet at a chain jeweler without knocking off a gas station. Nowadays the Quakerbridge Mall is an echo chamber of desolation, desperate for mouth breathing customers of any pedigree. Beatrix couldn't be bothered and frankly, neither could I.
