I visit Florence frequently and this trip stopped by for fruits and vegetables- and the best eggs anywhere. Even the sign says, happy chickens.' The vegetables are fresh picked - you can smell the earth- and about 1/ 3 the price of central Florence. The place is busy. Lots of locals. Inside are local goods, meat, poultry, cheese, and fish. You can't get any fresher. Olive oils and many other DTLA acids inside. Outside there are clothing vendors, farmers, plant sellers, jewelry and antiques. This market is not in the city centre and it's a bit further, but still walking distance. We came by just after 9:30 on a Friday. There are fewer crowds here, probably because of its location, which makes it a prime spot for food tours. We didn't do one but we just wandered around ourselves. There are fewer options here than Mercato Centrale but the trade off is that you don't have to deal with all the people. They sell a lot of the same stuff - fresh produce, meats, and some vendors selling food. We tried the tripe sandwich here, which wasn't as good as the other market, but still delicious. We also bought some strawberries outside, which might have been some of the best strawberries I've ever eaten in my life, so definitely don't sleep on those. Indoor / outdoor market that locals go to - high quality meats, cheeses, produce, etc. Shop merchants speak little to no English but super friendly and will try to converse. Prices are reasonable and market is worth the visit! Personally I bought a lot of truffle everything, cheese that is shelf stable and salami - all were packaged to be able to travel well. read more

Better than the central market! The interior has the shops of cheese, meat and other goodies, and outside ringing the market were the vegetable and fruit vendors. Also outside were stalls kinda like a flea market, with inexpensive leather goods, clothes, etc. It's a great place to wander around. read more

This market has fresh fruits and meat. the fruits looked good but I was starving coming off a two hour train ride from Milan. Italians start their day late. I got there at 8 and no vendors were open, they were just getting their day started. I walked around a bit and came back, found people eating at the lady in the picture's vendor so I figured it must be good. There's no name to her stall but its on the right side in the middle or just look for her. The porchetta sandwich was 4 euro, she grills it to melt the gelatinous skin and omg it's so goood! I also got fried fish, came with frits. also delicious!!! this was the best meal I had in Italy. I had trouble finding good food in Italy. read more

Love, Love, Love this market. It has everything you need cheese, meats, fruits, veggies, and even leather products. I spent an hour walking around the market enjoying the sights and sounds - the free samples of cheese didn't hurt either. The prices are cheap and everyone is incredibly friendly. I bought a bunch of cheese and charcuterie for lunch, along with fresh fruit. I spent less than 20 euros for everything. It's such a lovely market to walk around in please visit it if you get a chance. read more

Sant'Ambrogino is one of the most interesting spots to visit in Florence for those interested in experiencing the local taste. It's not nearly as flashy as Mercato Centrale (in fact it's kind of run-down) but what it lacks in pizzazz, it more than makes up for in character, and more importantly, deliciousness! The vendors of the outdoor market are a little variable. Here you will find everything from delicious local fruits / produce to what amounts to a flea market. The peaches amd nectarines I bought here are probably the best I've had in my life. The indoor market contains a few restaurants, cheese shops, delis and a seafood counter. You really can't go wrong with any of these spots and will likely encounter characters such as Urbano who enjoy chatting up the stray tourists who find themselves here. If the restaurants in the market don't appeal to you, the square provides several interesting alternatives such as Semel. Overall, a compulsory stop for farmer's market enthusiasts everywhere! Note the market wraps up by ~ 1pm and is closed on Sundays. read more

Being that I have something of a supermarket phobia, Mercato di Sant'Ambrogio is a bit of a god-send. Prior to finally making it in time to shop here, I had been going to the local supermarket down the block from my apartment, which reminded me of a NYC chain supermarket like Gristedes or D'agostino: crowded, uninspiring produce, a lack of healthy items, hard-to-find necessities, lousy cheap coffee... is it any wonder I get the willies just walking inside? But this market is different. Well, it's surely crowded, not much you can do about that, I guess. It's large and easy to navigate. There's plenty of specialty items (truffles!). Produce galore. Meat/seafood/cheese/bread vendors. I don't even know that I took it all in properly because we only had about 45 minutes before they closed. I should also mention what appears to be extremely fair pricing all around. I realize this review isn't one of my most exciting. Having spent several weeks in Florence over the years, I find myself returning over and over again to the wonderful Mercato Sant'Ambrogio. Situated just northeast of Santa Croce and around the corner from the Loggia del Pesce and numerous antique stores, this indoor and outdoor market sells everything from underwear, socks, shoes and clothing to salami, cheeses, bread, pasta, fruit, vegetables and wine. Locals abound and few tourists venture this far east of centro storico (historical center) even though Mercato Sant'Ambrogio has been around since 1873. The covered stalls outside offer shade from the summer heat, housing the fruit and vegetable vendors as well as those selling clothing, shoes, household items, and more. Much smaller, intimate, and less touristy than the Mercato Centrale located on the northern periphery of the historical center, Sant'Ambrogio feels much more comfortable and authentic. You can even sit down at the small Trattoria da Rocco (Mangino Gianpaolo) for a very inexpensive lunch (open Mon-Sat from 7 AM - 2 PM) at one of the few small tables where you will likely be dining with neighborhood residents rather than droves of tourists. As long-term tourists/short-term locals, we choose to go to Sant'Ambrogio Market for the majority of our grocery needs. As others have said in their reviews, there is an outdoor market and indoor market. The outdoor stalls mostly have fresh fruit and vegetables, but also there are a number of stalls that offer cheese, bread, flowers, dips, salumi, honey, and even one that focuses on Asian produce and pantry items. The indoor market has permanent storefronts that have offer an extensive amount of meat, pasta, bread, cheese, wine, and more. There are also seats if you want to eat some of the ready-made food offer at some of these businesses. The one downside of the market is that a number of the goods are not local, and I have a hard time finding out right away if I'm buying an Italian product or not. Of course, I could always ask the vendors, but my limited Italian makes it a lot easier for me to make a guess or search the product for some sort of indication of where it was grown or made. Since we have gone to the market several tomes by now, we have gotten to know some of the vendors well. They are very happy to give us more information about their products, give tips on how to prepare items, and have introduced us to the vendors who *they* like and trust. The lesser traveled and better market in Florence. Sant' Ambrogio market is a little farther south and west of the more popular San Lorenzo. We had a great experience here. Found a nice butcher and cheese shop. They were generous with samples and patient with the English/Italian language barrier. We got 3 meals worth of hard sausage, prochutto, cheese, and wine for only 17 Euro. At another stall we found a delicious loaf of rustic sourdough for just a few Euros. If I could spend more time in Florence, I would come here every day! read more

My favorite market! Outside: tons of fresh produce, honey, cured meats, flowers, pastries, bread, fresh pasta, clothing, and housewares. Inside: cheese shops, butchers, dry goods, wine, and more cured meat. Everyone is so friendly...I've been coming here for 4 years and have made some great connections. Omar is my favorite, and he slices strips of prosciutto to order. He'll usually spread some creamy fresh Gorgonzola on focaccia as a complimentary snack, as well! The biggest cheese shop inside (owned by the charming Urbano) has a lot of pre-vacuumed packed items that are perfect to travel home with and will also vacuum pack anything else you want for a small additional fee. Mercato Centrale has its draw and I gave it 5/5 in my other review. But if you're looking to get away from the crowd, where locals do their shopping, Sant'Ambrogio is your spot. It's east of most of the hustle and bustle, not far from Santa Croce. The workers speak less English here, the prices are a little better, and they have excellent shops. We picked up several meats, some wine, and burrata and had a great lunch. Outside, there are purveyors of produce and clothes and other knick knacks. If you need to shop groceries, rather than only doing sightseeing as a tourist, this is really the market to go to, rather than to the Mercato Centrale which is more designed for tourists and fitted for their needs rather than for daily and efficient shopping. First, prices are more decent in Sant'Amborgio and second you have real products and not only Italian typical products like truffle sauce to bring home. Also, the neighborhood is a very nice one to discover. Outside, you will find the vegetables and fruit stands (and also some clothes) and inside the meat, cheese and even some fish. Obviously, you need to try out to find the perfect spot for you as the quality among stands varies but I can assure you that you will find quality products there. My only regret about this market is the opening hours which in my views are terrible and antithetical with the very concept of a market: it is only open in the morning and not on the Sunday!!
