The pics were nothing really exciting; however, it was a gorgeous Saturday in December, so we thought we'd check it out to kill time. We caught public transportation from Praça do Restauradores, which zoomed us over to the Apolonia train station and a short walk to the market. Little did that Mercado de Santa Clara was gonna be HUGE, and apparently THE thing to do on a spectacular Saturday morning!!! The pics I saw online did absolutely no justice to what we had in-store for us! The place was overflowing with what seemed like hundreds of vendors, all hawking bric-a-brac and doo-dads and even "crap"! It was definitely a "flea market," indeed!!! It was truly fun to see all the stuff folks were trying to sell and make money off of. Lots of interesting stuff; lots of uninteresting stuff. Exactly what one would expect from a flea market! We even splurged on several ponchos and blankets that were too cool to pass-up!! :D We easily spent a good hour and a-half roaming through the "aisles." Shoppers were there in-force! And, too, being right next to several outdoor cafés made it easy to refuel and people-watch! (The indoor part of the market wasn't nearly as fun; but, still worth checking out.) The market is on Saturdays and Tuesdays, so I'm thinking I might pop back there on Tuesday, as I had my eye on something that I'm crossing my fingers will still be there...! We both cannot recommend the Mercado de Santa Clara enough...!!! :D

Feira da Ladra might not be the reason to go to Lisbon but if you're a flea market fan wondering…read morewhat treasures can be unearthed in that environment halfway across the world, this would be a great starting point. Occurring on Tuesdays and Saturdays, this open air flea market or, "thieve's market" (the literal translation), stretches from the bottom of one hill to the top, both sides of the street, with what's easily over a hundred vendors. I'd heard that bargaining isn't welcomed here and didn't try but even though I loved looking at everything, only a couple of things interested me enough to inquire about price. In the end, I tired of looking at everything before I ran out of everything to be looked at, but didn't come away empty-handed. A small art print was my prized-possession as well as a belief that everyone serious about vintage finds should make time for this during time spent in Lisbon.

There were tons and tons of vendors with all sorts of things at great prices for several city blocks with roads blocked off for pedestrians making it easy to shop. There was a nice mix of antiques and ceramics and old and new. I got a few small keepsakes as well as some totes and clothing for my daughter at fair prices. Definitely worth the visit. Plus, we walked through the charming Alfama and did additional shopping and snacking along the way. Several really cute breakfast spots can be found here.

Time Out market is overwhelming and fun. Best to come with a small group, so you can finagle a…read moreplace to sit, while others in the group hunt and source for the best bites. There's a variety of options and cuisines available, plus beers, wine and cocktails for purchase. I would leave small children at home with a babysitter, as trying to maneuver through the crowds with a stroller is just too much to deal with. We liked the tacos, burgers and pad Thai. Desserts are also available.

Not until I went to Lisbon's Time Out Market did I grow excited about my place of lodging being a…read moremere 5-minute walk from here. I'd been to other Time Out Markets, in the US, and found them places which I had little desire to return to. Not this one, to which I returned at least 3 other times. It wasn't just the easy appeal of an amply-poured glass of great wine at an equally great price, but the whole vibe of the place, featuring the best of Portugal's best. Literally, everything looked appealing here; choosing what to eat to accompany that wine? That was my sole dilemma. One side of this place has eateries that feature really well-priced nightly specials, often selling out, which gives you an idea of their popularity. I frequently found myself in another stretch of the place, opting for a wonderfully fresh sushi platter that ran about $30US. If you do nothing more than come for food and drink you'll likely not notice that there's a really wonderful, artsy shop (A Vida Portuguesa) that features unique and beautiful gifts for yourself or others. Also, a bookstore upstairs and, during the daytime, a huge farmer's market/green-grocery in another space attached to the main hall, but easily overlooked. I highly recommend this Time Out Market, even suggesting you plan your stay to be in close proximity. That's how much I liked it.
