    Yansai Ramen

A little difficult to find....while the address points it to somewhere on La Trobe St., it's actually nearer Swanston Street. As Yelper Lucy H. added, it's located on a busy footpath along the side entrance to Melbourne Central. Service is quick. In the evening, there was hardly any queue. It's a small shop so the seating space is accordingly small. If you get seated at a four-person table, you'll likely have to share that space with strangers as me and ny friend did. A staff member will present you a menu, but you have to go up to the counter to order. Within 10 minutes, our ramen order was about ready. It wasn't too bad- Actually, comforting to eat on a cold autumn day. The noodles had a good texture and not too soft. I was sufficiently pleased with the meal... It wasn't until later that night that my friend and I started feling feeling a little queasy. Ramen was the only thing we had both eaten; We wondered if it was the broth that was making our stomachs uneasy? (If so, I wonder if there was msg inside it?)

    Hakoya Ramen - Ebidon

Guys. This is the best char-siu I've ever had in my life. I…read morecould taste the char, the fire on the edges of the pork. It was appropriately fatty, but not all fat, you know? Now it's been over a year since I've had Totto (NYC, my favorite), and my tongue might be spoiled from eating bad ramen at like 5 places in Atlanta. But I am willing to say this was #1. Hakoya opened on the corner of a new "laneway" in the Upper West Side building (Lonsdale and Rose Lane) - it appears to have been open since November. There are 4 tables along the wall, with a bit of privacy from hanging dividers (noren?), as well as about 10 seats along a bar, which faces the kitchen. The menu is tight, as you should expect. I had my regular ramen order, spicy tonkatsu. You can choose your spicy - 1 pepper, 2, or 3. This nearly unnerved me and I had to ask the server for help on my decision. I played it safe and went with 2... I made the right choice. Balancing the two heats (spice and temperature), it's just enough to make you feel like you broke a sweat without actually breaking one. I always forget that the ramen being so hot makes the spice... well, spicier. A cold Sapporo kept me on the non-sweaty side of dinner. Between each seat are the accouterments you may need - soy, sesame, chili oil, garlic paste, pickled ginger - as well as wooden chopsticks (nice touch to match with the wooden spoon), napkins, and water jug and glasses. Easy. Every day there appears to be a happy hour, $4 for Sapporos between 3pm and 6pm. Highly recommend, and since I'm here for 2 weeks, I expect to be back!

Every time we asked them for something even ordering food they rolled their eyes! I literally had to get up to get everything that I want every time. The utensils were on the counter and they were standing right in front of it and they didn't even bother to move at least so I can get what I want. For the restroom they told that I have to leave my cellphone to get a key from them!!!! Horrible service. Food was very average. And didn't taste original at all!

There is an ample selection of items: a well stocked sushi takeaway section, a deli counter to choose your own bento and what I came to try, the ramen! There are a few udon and ramen choices: veg, chicken and pork (chasiu). I opted for the pork ramen (@ $12.50) and went upstairs to wait for my order. Less than 10 minutes later my mid-sized bowl of ramen arrived. Happily, all the right elements were in place for a satisfying bowl! A generous portion of egg noodles, several tender slices of pork, a creamy rich broth, bamboo shoots, seaweed, fishcake, green onions and roasted garlic. The serving size was perfect and however filling it was I could not help but to continue to slurp it down. Staff were friendly and attentive and the space was well accommodating. It was clean and well stocked. They cater to the NAB lunch crowd so the professionalism is well matched. Prices are reasonable and I walked away very happy with my meal. I recommend the spot for your next business lunch or casual outing. It is well situated near Southern Cross Station and Etihad Stadium.
