Since the shop is in Brighton you'd expect a bit of slap and tickle and the stock doesn't disapoint as it ranges from the fun to the filthy. This place is littered with an insane collection of items ranging from the useful, to the amusing, to the downright vulgar. You'll find comical postcards, greeting cards, wrapping paper, toys for cats, and gift bags, as well as somewhat less essential novelty items, like a 'Do it yourself cure for erectile dysfunction', or a £15 'Nose shower gel dispenser', which, like it sounds, is basically a giant nose, that dispenses shower gel. I thought Malarkey was a really fun store and we had a great time riffling through the treasure-trove assortment of items on display. It's certainly worth visiting if you want to relieve a bit of stress, just fancy a laugh, or want to get something a little different for a friend.

Daydream Nation is a shop solely dedicated to collectible card games (for example Pokemon cards, for the uninitiated). I don't know anything about CCG's, so I was quite amazed to see the enormous range. I noticed a lot of Buffy/Angel themed ones. Anyone hoping for specialist information in this review will be disappointed; I can't tell you whether they stock particularly hard to get hold of decks, or anything like that. However, the sales assistant was deeply engaged in conversation with a customer, and they have a whiteboard which lists upcoming releases and local CCG-related events. One half of the shop is more like an art gallery - drawings and paintings displayed on the wall, with unframed copies available for lower prices. Some of the artwork looked strangely familiar to me - and I recognised the name Quentin Blake as the illustrator for Roald Dahl's books. Neat! The rest of the shop is an arts and crafts-y gift shop: magnetic poetry, art supplies, jewellery ranging from kitschy to elegant, day planners, journals, posters and some large, colourful art books. A selection of greeting cards is also available, and Christmas items have been discounted - decorations and holiday knick knacks. The pieces are all very nice, and the prices high enough that you can expect proper worksmanship, it just needs to be your sort of thing. I wish I could pull off a more hippie-look, but I just don't have the right expression for it: if this is your thing, you probably shop here already, if not, why would you? There's one thing to be said for Jaba Yard: it's a lot better value than Greenwich Village, next door. A lot of people seem to think the two are connected: if I was running Jaba Yard, I'd be sure to make that distinction: their pieces are better made and cheaper. Definitely pop in here before trying next door.

What…read moreI didn't realise is that the people that own Jaba Yard also owned the former Greenwich Village and have now reclaimed both stores to extend out. Although 'next door' doesn't have an official name yet, according to the shop assistant it's most likely going to be called either by the same name or the 'Jaba Bizarre'. There was much outcry in Brighton when it was announced that Greenwich Village would be no more as it's been an integral part of North Laine for many years. It was a crowded, claustrophobic place which was rented out to a number of market-style traders selling unique, hippy-style dresses, bags, jewellery and home adornments. Now, the place is virtually unrecognisable. What was the crammed, cave-like corridor of stalls is now a white, light, airy shop with tons of natural light. All the stock (some of which is the same as before) is spaced out, easy to browse and just looks far classier. Definitely more my cup of tea than the chaos that was there before. I was having a chat to the shop lady (who was absolutely lovely) and she seemed genuinely proud when I was complementing her on the change. She was saying that there's still some decorating to do, as well as a load more stock to come in - so watch this space! This should make Jaba Yard a great addition to North Laine in its own right.

The shop is packed with vibrant, youthful clothing and many of the same bags and accessories you'll find at Yoma. This store is much larger than Yoma and can get quite crowded with teenagers at the weekend. The selection of stock is impressive- it doesn't particularly wow me, but I'm probably 10 years older than their average customer! (wow, that's depressing...) The bag selection is great and very up-to-the minute with lots of tote bags and holdalls. I distinctly remember Lulu Rose being one of the first places I saw metallic bags and purses (before they were everywhere), so it's probably a good place to go if you want to jump on board with the latest fashion and accessory trends. In the past I have always thought the clothing was kind off the mark, but lately I've seen a couple of good old body-con dresses (who isn't selling them, seriously, they're everywhere?!) and some pretty cardigans in the window. I prefer Lulu Rose to Yoma, because I don't feel its masquerading as something more upmarket...what you see is what you get.
