I've been coming to this gym for a little while now and honestly, it's been a great experience. I've found the gym for me, I never thought I'd say that about a weightlifting gym.. especially because I'm a girl and weightlifting gyms are usually very intimidating and intense. Not the case at Mendy's! I absolutely love that it's never packed & sometimes I have the gym all to myself, everyone's very respectful of your space and Mendy treats everyone like family- super cool dude. My son and I came in for an interview with Scot with the intention of joining Mendy's Gym. Scot is a very down to Earth guy with a heart as big as his biceps. Unfortunately, we did not join because of financial hardships NOT because the gym is lacking in anyway. This IS the gym that the Valley needs. It does not follow the big box gym standard in anyway. This is an old school pride of ownership gym that shines throughout. If two hours on an elliptical trainer watching E! is what you call a workout you will probably be unhappy here. If the most important piece of workout equipment to you means that your athletic shoes MUST match your shirt and both MUST match the stripe in your spandex pants you probably won't be happy here. If getting a workout that involves a serious sweat and muscle soreness, the next day, breaking plateaus, all while under the watchful eyes of real professionals that know what they're doing (in practice and not just theory) is important to you then pony up the cash and come to a real gym. Mendy's is a great place to get your workout on. First time I walked in to check it out I knew I had found the gym for me. Mendy and Ashley are very friendly and helpful. I workout at 0400 in the morning and the place is always spotless. They have everything I want in a gym. Dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, MMA cage, heavy bags, and well maintained machines. I had the pleasure to check out Mendy's gym tonight, and what a great place. Scott Mendelson is an outstanding host. I was made to feel at home right away, and was introduced to the couple people there at the time. He takes pride and having a place that's a family. He has very clear rules. Clean up after yourself and don't be a jerk. If only every gym had people put weights back. What a world that would be. This is an excellent weight lifting gym, with every machine you may need to have an excellent workout. I was able to do a full body workout without fighting over machines at my own fairly quick pace, and was able to grab the exact weighted dumbbell when I needed it. Mendy is a great person who loves what he does, and although he is a mountain, does not intimidate you if you're just starting off. You can't say that about most other gyms. Definately a gem in the valley. Thank you Mr. Mendelson for the hospitality today. P.s. I arrived at 5 PM and did not have to fight for a squat rack. Mind blown. I joined Mendy's Gym 3 weeks ago. I went in to Mendy's and met Scot and Ashely. Scot and Ashely greeted me with a very warm welcome. Scot showed me around the gym and told me about what he has accomplished and I couldn't help but to be amazed. I've learned more in the 3 weeks Scot has been training me then I have in the last 10 years weight lifting by myself and reading magazines and books. This review is way overdue. I and when I say I, I mean my whole family loves this gym. I was looking for a new gym that was open late and this place popped up on google as open. So I dropped in the next day and met Scot who interviewed me for all of 2 minutes and signed me up. I think he could tell I was desperate for a place where I could go anytime and not deal with having to wait for the dumbbell I needed or the machine I needed. It is never crowded. Maybe not the best business decision for Scot, but it seems like he is selective about who joins the gym. It seems like everyone he picks is down to earth, friendly, and respectful of each other. There are guys who are seriously ripped and competitors in the weight lifting world and there are a lot of people like myself just trying to get fit and put off the effects of aging because there is still so much we want to do in life. I then told my wife about this gym and she went and was impressed and signed up for personal training with Scot along with my 14 year old son. My wife has never been much for the gym but she hardly every misses a workout now and she is getting results. She looks awesome! And my son who was recovering from an ACL injury probably recovered much quicker working with Scot who understood the challenge. Now he is playing basketball for his High School team. We go there late at night sometimes and get in some good Father and son time. (Which is getting harder as they get into the teenage years) We were talking about the gym needing more people late at night like us (it wasn't a school night) and he said "I would be devastated if this gym wasn't here".. So now we consider this a home away from home and we consider Scot not only the gym owner but a friend with a big heart who is kindly pushing us and making us healthier in spite of ourselves so we can live a healthier life. It doesn't feel just like having a membership but being part of group of friends or a family who must all chip in to support the cause of a great place to be at and get ourselves stronger and healthier. Don't let the location scare you either, the gym is secure with double doors, security codes, and IR dongles. It is an Oasis in Van Nuys and I always feel very safe here. read more

Love this gym. They have equipment here you see NO PLACE else, including a belt squat machine which lets you squat with no spinal compression which is awesome if you've got any back issues. I love the mat and cage which is where they have different classes like boxing, mma, and Jiu-Jitsu. I'd definitely encourage anyone serious about lifting or combat sports to check this joint out, because the instructors are all super accomplished in their respective sports as well. read more

My son and I signed up at Mendy's Gym to both join the gym and to get private training from Mendy. I'm 56 and my son is 18. We both wanted to get our technique sorted. For me, I want to lift into old age. For my son, he wanted the same but he also wants to be a trainer when he grows up. Mendy's gym itself is probably one of the most complete in terms of equipment I've ever seen despite its size (I've been lifting since age 15). He also has some equipment you wont find in most gyms - including the real expensive ones. And some of that gear for me personally made a huge difference. When I started with Mendy, I had knee pain so bad some days I could barely walk and I sometimes had to stop half way up the stairs (lifetime of martial arts and motorcycles). I was also starting to get a brand new pain in my left hip. Before I went to Mendy's I had already lost 25 pounds through diet and had been cycling through doctors, physical therapists and different types of weight training with no luck where my knees were concerned. Within a month of training with Mendy the hip pain was gone. Two months in and the stairs and long distance walking was not an issue. After 3-4 months of following his training methods I ran a 12 minute mile. I am absolutely amazed at the progress. I really thought running would not be in the cards for me. I know I sound like a paid ad but hit me up if you have questions. Some people have posted negatively about being interviewed for the gym. I say Hell yeah. First of all - no crowds. Secondly, the people I've met are all not only interesting but serious about training. People who show up, put the headphones on and say, "Hey what's up bro?" and get to work. You will train beside world champions (Mendy is a 5x world record holder), Olympians, body builders and people like first responders for whom fitness is a priority. No ass hats who don't put the weights away or hang out hitting on chicks and hogging the squat rack. I have only worked with a few trainers in my life but I cant imagine anyone better than Mendy. Beside his encyclopedic knowledge of all aspects of training, he is incredibly funny (what my Grandma would call "a real character"), has more stories than Scheherazade, and genuinely wants to see you improve and reach your goals. You will work your ass off and have fun doing it. Whether you train with Mendy or just use the gym I can't recommend it highly enough. He has created a sacred space for like minded people to train together without all the BS you run into at other gyms. read more

Not affiliated to the gym at all. I'm not even a member. Walked in last week for the first time to a completely empty gym and asked the owner if I could check out the place. I got one of the most hospitable welcomes I have ever received. He explained his background and what the gym was all about. As well as invited me to workout. He gave me an iPad to play the music I wanted and the speaker system is absolutely amazing. There's nothing better than an empty gym and blasting music to hit chest. The gym itself beautiful. Don't get me wrong it's not a huge gym, or even a big gym for the matter. But it has a homey feel with every single equipment you need. Super cool powerlifting equipment as well as all the basics. Would choose Mendy's gym over 24, la fitness, or equinox any day. There's also the benefit of knowing your money is going to a guy that just loves the gym culture and is passionate about it and not a corporation. I'm moving out the country and the only thing that sucks about that is I won't be able to join this gym. RIP to all the potential gains I could have made at Mendys!!!!!!! read more

I am someone who can not deal with the atmosphere of bigger gyms at all, I am also someone who is terrible at keeping up with working out (lol) however, I just recently signed up and I instantly fell in love with this gym after my first workout! Everyone I've met so far have been extremely nice and so helpful in giving me workout tips and advice. I just moved to Lake Balboa and have had trouble finding a gym. Most everything out here is group fitness classes or horrible chain gyms. I dropped in at Mendy's, and it was a very solid gym. It has everything you need--cardio machines, free weights, cable machines, and a spacious kickboxing area if that's your bag. (PUN INTENDED, MOFOS). The real strength of the place was its staff. The front desk person (Ashley I think?) was extremely kind, helpful, and welcoming. The owner (a world record holding lifter, I believe) was there, too, and was also incredibly welcoming. He even generously invited me to come by for a strength training tutorial. You can tell it's a real family business where they pride themselves on customer service. Unfortunately for me, it's just a too far away from home to make sense to join. And that sucks, because good gyms seem to be few and far between out here in the valley. But for anyone closer looking for a solid gym with A+ people running it, I'd take a hard look at Mendy's. read more

But I feel so good after the classes and it's just what I was looking for. They also offer personal training which I also recently started with Mendy (Scot) himself. I am a 70 year old male cancer survivor who during radiation and chemo treatment, lost most of my muscle mass (50 ibs). I'm in my sixth week of strength training with Ashly Crawford and am constantly amazed by her ability to not only isolate my muscle problems but also by her concern for every move I make. I have had a lower back problem since my late teens... she knows that and if we're working on certain muscle groups and I wince, she changes the routine...
