Yet another big box store that doesn't have decent staff. This store is an hour and a half round trip for me, so getting the correct product is important. I bought a ceiling fan with down rod, neither item came with the extender kit for the wires to reach. I was on the phone with them THREE separate times and got as many answers if they had the correct kit in stock. No one could answer my question, why, if an extender kit is needed for a down rod, why wasn't I told? I called Hunter directly and they told me that this model doesn't allow for a down rod. When I came in to exchange it, the saleswoman said she'd never heard of them not allowing for a down rod. I asked why I wasn't sold the kit at time of purchase, no answer. I asked for the kit, it's a special order. HOW DO YOU SELL A PRODUCT WITHOUT EVERYTHING NECESSARY TO INSTALL IT? I have electricians working hourly to put this fan in and I am running wild goose chases to get them what they need and still, FOUR HOURS later, I am empty handed. I walked in and they insist on face masks. Ok fine I will do my best to comply. I purchased one of their face masks for just under $1. I have COPD and and covering the nose as well as my mouth often creates difficulty for me to breath. I walked up to the service desk and approached an older gentleman and he asked me to cover my nose my nose if I wanted to be helped. I replied in a joking manner, "Yes Sir. I will respect your wishes but please understand I have COPD and if I pass out it's on you." His rude reply was, "NO! It's On You!" Then it starts.... We had a heated exchange of words back and forth until I finally decided to walkaway from the ignorance of their employee. I repetitively stated, "Sir! I complied to request. I have respected your wishes." And this elderly gentleman was obviously not seeking anything but a confrontation and continued to push the last word as if he were the dominant person in the conversation. I spoke to the Manager at the front desk by the exit. He listened half heartedly and basically gave me the impression as if this is common practice. Very Disappointing to say the least. I clearly stated, "There's always three sides of each story. His, Mine and the Truth. However the customer service or attention was worthless." The manager basically just looked away without a word. Again so disappointing. Please keep in mind the whole time I was respectful utilizing terminology as we do in Texas with Sir and so forth. Lowering my level of maturity to match the gentleman behind the counter was worthless to me. Being basically dismissed by the manager was unbelievable. I wasn't seeking the guys job or an apology. I was pointing out what a business owner should want to know about how their employee's handle their customers. Nothing more. The results and lack of caring was absurd. I spent $5K three days ago and had them ship it to my job site. I was setting up the second part (receipt available upon request) of that order which was another $5K to be delivered during the week. A gentleman named Shannon and the delivery coordinator were absolutely fantastic during that experience. I guess I was expecting too much to be treated with respect in the second visit. To be honest I typically wouldn't let one person like that experience bring me down on a business. But when the manager basically doesn't seem to care either it can only allows me to believe that the issues starts higher up the chain of command. Therefore I will spend my money with Home Depot who get almost $500K/yr out of my business (Mayer Retail Construction). read more

I went to Menards today because my kitchen sink came apart and leaked all underneath. The Christmas time upon me money is tight and I didn't feel like I'd call a plumber. So I took a couple pictures of my plumbing and headed off to Menards. A young lady in electrical called and asked for someone to come to the plumbing desk for me. A young man with dark hair and glasses helped me. He not only showed me what to buy they told me exactly how to put it on. I am a senior citizen woman and for the first time in my life I fixed a kitchen sink all due to the lessons learned from your salesman. I am so thankful! I ordered something online. Walked in and asked at the front customer service area where to pick it up. They said I'd need to go to the back of the store and I'd see where. I went back. The store is massive. Asked an employee. He said back by paint. Ok. No obvious place. Had to buy other stuff. Lumber selection was awful. Was going to go to Home Depot and some employee told me there was a lumber yard and you have to order your wood at the front and pay and then go get it. What? I'm sort of figuring out what combination I want. Then I need bolts. They're all disorganized. I find one employee who doesn't know a bolt from a nut. Another finally comes. I check out. It's been 45 minutes. I ask the cashier where to pick up online order. She has to call a manager. Apparently you have to drive around, through a gate where a man in a mask gets right in your window and demands to see papers so you can get to the lumber and to door 11 to pick up your order. The kid back there laughed that no one ever knows where they are and that every employee just sucks at telling people where to go. Further, I ordered the same item at another store and they didn't have it but want me TO COME TO THAT STORE TO CANCEL THE ORDER. Are you kidding? On the way out I saw a kid driving a forklift filled with boards that all one by one fell off. Huge OSHA violation. I will never go to a Menards again. Ever. read more

We spent 2 hours in the store setting up a $4500 window order. Noah was bery helpful but accidently goofed up on a detail that held us up for a half an hour. We went to checkout and needed an ID so my partner ran to the car to get it. Evidently he went out at 8pm when the store closed and he came back to the building and it was 8:02 and Amber the front end manager would not let him back in the store, and her manager said not to let him in either because it was policy. That's actually called poor business. I worked for Ace for years and the customer service was always outstanding. They would never have treated a customer that poorly. Pathetic. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. I am a contractor who is looking to get some samples of some roofing material to show a couple of my customers some different color options. I went to Menards to retrieve a few samples to show them, I was informed that I would be needing to purchase the samples in order to leave with them. Please keep in mind that these samples are given for free at literally all other suppliers in the country. In my 12 years in the construction industry I have never once been charged for a sample of material for color selection. This is coming from the same low down no good company that charges people for masks, just absolutely absurd behavior from a multi million dollar corporation! 0 STARS I'm not going to say any names but I have a very close family member whom is 17 and has severe ADHD AND ANXIETY. he applied for a job working pretty much on his own. He then got called in for an interview and at the interview he had been bouncing his leg and playing with his hair but the manager proceeded with the interview. After the interview the manager proceeded to tell two other employees that he did not hire him because he was too jittery during his interview. We ordered a product in November. We called the store to see if they had a different size in stock and were told yes. We were told if we had our receipt we could just bring it in for an exchange. When we got there, they did NOT have the product and to return it would cost us a 40.00 fee. The people working that day said they thought the fee should be waived since the product was not there and my husband had to be in the store for over an hour trying to get to that point. However, only the general manager could make that call and he wasn't there. We were given a merchandise check minus 25% rather than the gift cards we paid with. When I contacted the general manager (Ray) he said they charge the 25% regardless of circumstances. When I told him the check they gave me was worthless (can't order online using it), he said the refund was given in the same payment as was used for the purchase. I contacted him again to tell him we used gift cards and ordered online. We were given a check that can't be used online and they don't have the item I store. I asked for contact information for someone above him in the admin chain. He wrote telling me he wanted to help me. Please send the order number. I have sent it 3 times and emailed him to remind him I still need a resolution almost weekly since Nov 18th. Now he simply doesn't reply. Maybe he thinks I will go away if he ignores me? I'll be honest, I really went back and forth between a 2 star and 3 star rating on this Menards. First, the reasons for a 2 star rating would be the customer service. Every time I go into this Menards and need help finding something or purchasing something that requires me to go through the gate to the back I feel as though I am a huge inconvenience to the employees. Instead of walking me to the product, they just point and then give me a 2-3 aisle estimate of where the product might be. When it comes to ordering or purchasing large items that require going through the back every employee who has helped me has been hard to find and again make me feel as though they have better things to be doing. The last reason for a 2 star rating is that the always seem to be out of the product I need and I end up having to go to a different hardware store to get it. Now for the reason for a 3 star rating is the tool rental option. I don't want to buy expensive tools that I would use maybe once or twice every 5 years, so being able to rent a power tool is awesome. The rates are cheap and the customer service desk employees are very helpful. It is for this reason that I am giving this store a 3 star rating. Menards is the place I go to rent tools and thats it. If I need to buy something I go to another store where I know I will be helped and the product will be in stock. read more

This place is overwhelmingly H U G E. There is a a vast selection of everything from candy bars to bamboo flooring to coffee mugs to roofing supplies. The 8 times out of 10, the staff are very helpful. read more

Of all the Menard Store's I have been at and ordered/purchased from this one in Janesville is the best. I have used the other construction stores in southern WI but always had the best service and prices here. The contractor's services desk are friendly and professional. The staff is rude, inept, thoughtless, and deceitful; and the prices are too high. My last two visits here have resulted in two hours of my time wasted. Visit 1: Came in to exchange a "warrantied for life" tool shop wood clamp. Told to take the old one with me and get a new one - told like I was an asshole for not knowing, with the kind of tone you hear from teenagers in bad movies about how shitty teenagers are. But okay... go get the clamp, duck into the fasteners aisle, come back to card left in the next aisle - cart is gone. But okay - overzealous staff just tidied up by accident. No worries. Back to front counter: "Yeah... it's not like i can exchange your item unless I have the old one." The old one... that one of the staff tidied up... that you saw me come in with... -- there were literally zero wheels turning in this gal's head, just a vacant "well, f**k off" stare on her face. Result: hour of time wasted. Almost my fault because it took an hour for me to realize how dumb and uncaring the two staff I was talking to were and as soon as a manager got involved he said something akin to "just do it, it's a $10 clamp, who cares." Visit 2: Bought three trees last year on a good sale. One died, but that's not a terrible result for discount box store trees - and the return policy sounded good. They said that if a tree dies to just snap off a branch and bring it in. I went above and beyond just in case: snapped off a branch AND took pictures of the dead tree. Took my dead branch and pics in... NOPE. Nope - go home, dig up the tree, come back with it, and bring it in or no refund. -------------------------- I've got a handful of other little stories about this place. Most of them involve staff interactions. e.g. Treated like an asshole because the two guys in hardware were positive that there was no such thing as a flush cut saw (because in their combined zero years of working in a shop they'd never heard of it). Which was very odd for me because I literally look like a lumberjack carpenter complete with beard, suspenders, and 6'7'' frame and I'm not bashful, so when I politely ask "where do you keep the flush cut saws" the correct response is to google something you've never heard of, not assume the carpenter doesn't know wtf he's talking about and treat him like an idiot. -------------------------- Finally, the prices are just too high. "We price match!" is NOT an argument. A trip to the hardware store shouldn't involve an hour of homework and another twenty minutes of standing in the store to actually GET the price match (while they thoroughly double and triple-check everything, looking for any reason to disqualify it.) Random check on the last thing I bought at a competitor without checking prices first (I won't say its name but its initials are HD and it's a type of cache, one might even say a Depot of goods one can use in their house, or Home.) Flexzilla 50' 14-gauge. Yup, $28 at HD, $37 at Menards. But wait - actually $24 at HD because I'm a veteran. 54% more expensive at Menards. (This is NOT knocking Menards for not offering a vet discount. It's cool when business do it, but it's not *bad* when they don't.) Random check #2: wrought iron gate hardware (decorative latch and hinges): $26 ($23) at HD, $31 at Menards. 35% more expensive at Menards. You're stuck taking my word that these were random. Let me find something I could have got cheaper at Menards to balance it out. Here we go (but NOT REALLY). Titebond III 2-pack. $58 at HD and $51 at Menards - but... it's not sold in stores and HD will ship to my house for free and Menards doesn't, so... WHAT THE HELL IS A $2.80 PROCESSING FEE DOING IN 2016? I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF BUYING FROM YOUR WAREHOUSE INSTEAD OF RETAIL, WHICH COSTS YOU CONSIDERABLY LESS OVERHEAD? (First time seeing this - forgive the caps. I knew shipping would balance the prices out, but apparently I have to pay for the privilege of saving their company money.) Oh... eff right off, Menards. Seriously. -------------------------- It's a 1-star to me. The prices got out of control a while ago an the staff are like I've already described. The only reason I've been back after the BS with the clamp is to get the refund from the tree, and I wrote how that turned out. I have been to Menard's too many times to count and it's all because my husband likes to take on "projects". We've been there for flooring, tiles, paving and edging stones, and more. I have always had a pleasant experience each time we've gone and can't complain about the customer service or the status of the store floor. Everything is always nice and neat and I can easily find what I'm looking for. read more

I love this place! For being a very large store it us laid out really well. All the electrical is in one department and the selection is great. I can go there for one thing and be in and out in under 10 minutes. The staff is very helpful and easy to find someone if you need help. read more

As a whole, this Menards is pretty good. I question the employees that work there. Most of the employees are friendly and very helpful. But there are some that are questionable. Does Menards do background checks on their employees? It doesn't seem like it. read more

The Rental Center is a joke. They rented me a Floor sander with a broken wheel. A Tile cutter with a dull blade and if you bring anything back a minute late they charge you per hour. They will use their security camera to determine the time you walked in to prove how right they are and "Wrong" you are. They like to inflict some real Gestapo/Big Brother stuff with their rental equipment that has not been maintained. Cleary, the customer is wrong at this store and they are happy to make sure you are aware of it. Steer clear and rent somewhere else. read more
