Checked this place out because my boyfriend is a drummer and was pleasantly surprised to find lots of cool historical drum memorabilia by some pretty big name musicians. It was fun to look around. I have purchased three new Zildjian cymbals from Memphis Drum Shop after watching the video demonstration for each one. Those videos are an asset, for sure, because I come away with representative samples concerning appearance, sound, and playability. All my purchases have arrived as scheduled, with a certificate signed by the owner, and in excellent condition because of effective packaging. I live in Arizona so that's a lot of shipping distance with opportunity for wear and tear. I have gotten to know and trust Will. When I have questions, he takes the time to answer them. But if he does not know the answer at the time, he calls me back later with the answer. Also, he pays attention to messages that I leave for him with other employees when he is in a meeting or helping other customers, and that tells me that Memphis Drum Shop staff work together to put customer satisfaction first. I purchased a bass drum head and realized upon delivery, I bought the wrong size. I tried several times to return it paying the exact same shipping cost that I paid when purchased. It's an experience just to walk into this place it is so huge they have a vintage section and brand of stuff that I had never even seen before. Some of the guys on Beale Street need to come here and upgrade their equipment. As the manager just about anything they know everything there is to know about drums. Don't waste your money, time or resources shopping here! The people here and the owner in particular, Mr. Pettit, cares more about presentation, money and his own pride than he cares about making 'you', the customer, happy! It's true! After a few snare purchases, I scratched my head, asking myself what I was doing! I still have one snare I bought from them and it's great but the overall experiences with this shop were really bad! I really wanted the Noble and Cooley, Solid Shell, Cherry snare drum which I bought. I put up with some harassing, rude treatment from the owner, just to get it. He also sold me a 'questionable' Brady snare drum, previous to the N&C snare, which I sold. I say it was questionable because Chris Brady's own daughter could neither confirm or deny the snare drum's authenticity. This drum was alleged to be one of the last 30 snare drums that Chris Brady produced. To this day, you won't see 'one' video anywhere on the internet of any of those drums, nor any of them in the market. Also, the company that made them is nowhere to be found in business and Brady issued legal statements on their site for those who were using their moniker, manufacturing similar drums ti theirs to 'cease' and 'desist!' The Brady family went on to deny they were making or authorizing anyone else to make their drums, 'fully' maintaining their decision to close and be out of business! I don't know but the evidence is pretty clear! Memphis Drum Shop is shady to pull something off like this and fool thirty something customers! I inquired about it but it looked like a costly endeavor and things pretty much worked out the way I thought they would. Everything except Mr. Pettit got away with what is apparently 'fraud!' I wouldn't buy a drum stick of drum head from these people if I had a gig down the block I and was dire need of those items! I'd rather cancel the gig! I implore you for all that is good and humane, please really consider before giving this shoo and Mr.Pettit, your time, money and resources. Thank you. read more

A great place to visit if, like me, you've never quite outgrown your childhood fondness for banging on pots and pans. (I'd probably give 5 stars if I had as much money to spend on percussion equipment as I'd like to have!) I've bought mainly accessories (heads, sticks, brushes, the odd auxiliary percussion instrument) here, but even though I'm not a big spender, I've always found the staff to be helpful, offering suggestions that do NOT always involve buying the more expensive piece of equipment. Moreover, the Drum Shop offers drum lessons (one of my cousins had a great experience with that!) as well as drum/percussion clinics, workshops, and performances featuring local and out-of-town musicians. read more

They have everything you could possibly think of, and probably some things you haven't dreamed of yet. Super cool! They have a cymbal vault and a snare vault with the owners personal collection in it. It's like drummer Heaven. They put on gloves to show you cymbals. Super official. I didn't really see any low end gear there. Everything was pristine. I'm not a drummer. No, as sad as this fact may be, I never had the coordination to get very far in Beatles Rock Band let alone an actual factual drum. Sucks too, cuz chick drummers are hot. It's a fact. Sadly, I've always strayed more towards the vocal end of being musically inclined and as hard as I tired to learn mad clarinet, violin and guitar playing skills, I've never had the discipline required to become a rock star. This place is THE place in Memphis to go if you need anything in the way of percussion. They have 6 different showrooms stocked to the gills with drumming necessities. It's a drummer's paradise folks! I love that they offer vintage options as well as the new, shiny ones. They also run the gamut from beginner to expert pieces. Cymbals much? Hell fire, Ive never seen so many cymbals gathered together in one place at one time. It's a freaking cymbal convention. The staff here is incredible. They know what they are talking when in comes to drums. They also offer lessons for those of us who are more of the "not so musical instrument inclined." Ok, incredibly biased because I work there. But nonetheless, this is a spot that people in this town really do under appreciate. It is known all over the world, and in 20 years of business, practically every drumming legend out there has or will step through the doors to at least check the place out or do an awesome clinic in the concert room kept hidden in the back. This is about as close to a boutique drum shop as it gets. It features the largest cymbal inventory in the world, and one of the largest collections of drum kits, snare drums and latin percussion equipment. And that is about as much as I can convey without sounding like a sales pitch. Just keep in mind, employees are "not" commission based like most of the music shops in town. They have some awesome drum sets from every brand you could imagine, along with an extensive hand percussion room, and (one of my favorites) the cymbal vault. I play a little of everything. Don't hate... but I play V-Drums as well. I play mostly guitars. I needed a new head for my banjo. No one... I mean no one had a head for my banjo. Someone suggested I go to Memphis Drum shop. They did not have the specific head I needed in stock, but were about to make an order from the specific vendor who made the head. Amazingly, I was able to purchase two CUSTOM heads for not much more than a couple of Remo heads! Drummers... DO NOT miss this amazing store! Excellent selections and great customer service! Even if you aren't a drummer, this is a great place to visit and gawk at all the amazing gear on display! You will gain an education on drum gear! read more

He not only clarified the issue verbally, he sent me technical drawings so I could really understand the design. The clinics they put on with their wide selection of inventory makes it a great place to get your drumming fix. It's worth the travel if you can catch their clinic schedule and plan ahead of time.
