Evening of: 31/10/24…read more I have stated this previously in other reviews, I don't do them for gain, I do them to either praise or so that the establishment can improve on things that go wrong. I only looked at other reviews after my meal, and I was astounded by the variances of experiences. Although, you must speak as you find. Before I start this full review, WOW, what a wine list! Someone knows their wines. A fantastic selection, and this is not meant in any patronising way. If only I could have eaten a sweet, but I couldn't justify a half bottle of the Monteagudo Pedro Ximenez, Delgado Zuleta dessert wine. It will have to live for another day. On to the review..... The place styles itself as a bistro. It was warm and convivial, and tables didn't appear to be on top of each other. I was greeted in a friendly manner and shown to a table with ample room with additional seating. Ideal for my overcoat. I thought the menu selection was very good. I was asked what I would like to drink and initially ordered a pint of lager (Birra Moretti) after asking what was on offer. Later I ordered a large glass of Pinot Grigio to go with my main. My main arrived at my table 15 minutes after it was ordered. Not a problem as I expected the fish not to take too long to cook and the rest would have been pre-prepared. Main: Baked fillet of cod, over sauté new potatoes, buttered French beans, vine tomatoes and roast chill butter. The latter was a great flavour to have with the potatoes. The price was £26. Some will say quite pricey, but the cod was cooked to perfection, and it was a fully enjoyable main. The bill was as follows: Birra Moretti - £5.50 Baked Cod - £26.00 250ml of Pinot Grigio - £8.90 25ml of Courvoisier - £4.50 (I'll come back to the brandy) - NOTE: I have paid more elsewhere Latte - £3.90 Total - £48.80 (TIP - £5) The brandy, I asked for a large, but got a single, the lady misheard me. I stressed, no ice, and asked if they had a brandy glass, yes, they had.... Things I'd add. The glass was too small, the glass was cold, and I used the candle on the table to warm the glass and contents. I mentioned they could have used the steamer on the coffee machine. They took it in good part, I hope. The latte - perfect, lovely flavoursome coffee. Would I go back? Most certainly and to make sure I tried that dessert wine. Thanks everyone.

Front of house staff are very pleasant and efficient too. This place has long been a favourite haunt for people that want a decent meal in town and it's my local restaurant as it's just down the hill from me. So I was hoping that it would be blinder so that me and the missus could wander down for dinner and drinks on a regular basis and not have to fork out a taxi. Unfortunately not. The menu lacks imagination, and appears to be devised by someone who really can't be asked with doing anything new and interesting. For instance there was a choice of 5 starters, almost all of which were repeated in the main course section, i.e. mussels as a starter or a main, crab cakes as a starter or a main, etc. The other odd thing was the mussels, listed as local - well they can't be that local as we're not near the sea. Furthermore, after a bit of questioning the kitchen (thank you very helpful front of house girls) it transpired that their mussels were supplied by Samways in Bridport. Now Samways is a very good supplier, but their mussels come from wherever they can get them, mainly Cornwall, Wales but sometimes from Scotland. The local mussels (well as close as you can get) are from Portland which can be very dirty. I suspect our mussels were from Cornwall due to the clean shells, but that's a pure guess. One page of the menu was dedicated to steaks - every type imaginable. The girlfriend as ever went for fillet steak, even after my advice to the contrary. My worst fears were realised when this thing came out, which although technically fillet, didn't really look like one, more like a sirloin with the fat cut off. It also had no real flavour, cue more pepper sauce. In summary, I'd rather spend the extra money when going out and go somewhere great, like The Green in Sherborne. Maybe I need to move there? See my other reviews for good places to eat in the area.

However we were served our food way before water or any type of drink we ordered despite being Id'd for it My boyfriend had finished his bolognese spaghetti of 13.50 for a (which was just a spoonful) before the drinks had arrived. Ironically enough, the best part about this whole experience was that it didn't taste awful, though no where near worth it's value. We ordered 2 cocktails of 7.50 which tasted awful, nowhere near the standards. They came in tiny wine glasses instead of actual cocktail glasses (assuming this is a cheap Italian gimmick which doesn't happen in Italy but anyway) . The strawberry daiquiri tasted expired and watery and was not the right colour. No crushed ice just watered down strawberry shite. The espresso martini was worse and was 50% undrinkable froth and the rest was watered down cheap expired tasting coffee. Obviously we were unhappy with what we got for the price but the worst of it had yet to come. When I went to get the bill I paid in cash gave them £50 in notes was £42 ridiculous and they were like "do you not have exact change" and I was like no or I would have given it to you lol ... and they were like well your the first people we serve lol how is that my problem as the customer?? and they went round the back and gave me coins out of her own personal wallet in my face. Super ghetto and unprofessional for a first date. Wish I had a Time Machine. Our overall thoughts, not a place to go unless you are earning money reviewing bad experiences

Once you go in, its warm and lovely inside with a real fire and staff that are about as passionate as you can get. And then you see the view. Its incredible. We luckily got there just in time to watch the sun set in the distance, over the stunning countryside. Perfect. Our dinner was outstanding. We paid just £150.00 for a 10 course tasting menu, bed and breakfast. Dinner was not off the standard menu, as my wife doesn't eat meat, however, Brett, the very talented owner/chef catered perfectly with dishes that include scallops, mackerel, risotto with pumpkin and black truffle, sea bass and salmon. I was even given a beef main course of fillet, a mini burger and braised beef with marrow bone. Incredible! After all the above, we had to endure desserts. Fortunately, they were equally good. Frozen pineapple ravioli followed by a crowd pleasing trio of chocolate deserts. To finish off, I fancied a brandy. They only had Somerset brandy - as I was told, they do EVERYTHING they can to keep everything local, including the brandy. I couldn't be happier. I spoke to Brett, the head chef and he said he was just happy cooking great food. I think if he carries on at the standard that he is currently at, he will certainly end up with 3 AA rosettes and maybe even a Michelin star. Its really that good. Back to breakfast. It was simply perfect. Great ingredients, the eggs are from the families own chickens in the garden, he bacon and sausage are from a local farm. All the ingredients are top class with great cooking. I have eaten breakfasts at 30+ venues in my home city of Birmingham. This would be the best. Its that good. It was certainly one of the best breakfasts I have ever eaten! The cooking is top class too.
