This place had the best Venezuelan food to offer while I stayed in Argentina for 3 months. My…read moregirlfriend and I first tried this place because it was down the street from where we lived.
The owner was very helpful with the menu. Our spanish wasn't good so he guided us through the selection of food. They definitely have a lot of patience there, that's for sure.
We ended up going with the arepas. My girlfriend fell in love after the first bite! We had tried arepas once, but it was a colombian/korean fusion style that was good, but just didn't compare to the one at la cabonera.
The owner had mentioned that on saturday afternoon was empanada day. I have a great love for empanadas, so we were there! I am so happy that we found out about empanada day. It is something very special.
I don't know if a lot of people know it but, each and every empanada is made to order. That is as fresh as it can get!! The wife owner sits in the back the whole time flattening the masa, filling it up, and folding it, all by hand! There's a lot of love put into these empanadas. The moment you bite into it, angels come down from the heavens and sing to you. It's totally different from an argentine empanada because it's corn instead of the flour and i love that. It is the crunchiest empanada i've ever bitten into. I love the mechada, which is the shredded beef. The meat stays super tender and juicy inside it's masa house. Pair it with their papelon and that's it! Amazing
