The…read moremost striking feature of the entire centre is probably the outside Olympic sized swimming pool. I've never tried it out but it does look amazing. What I have tried on numerous occasions are their squash courts. There are 10 international standard squash courts including a four walled glass show court. The courts are the best that we play on in our league (on a par with Moorabbin). They are quicker than most around the circuit but I'm a fan. If I lived next door to MSAC, I would play a hell of a lot more sports here. A great venue for all sports.

When I joined up I was given an introductory personal training session in which I was reminded how unfit I was and sent packing with a detailed report on my woeful state of health. Or that's how it felt. Totally demoralising and I never went back. That was the background to my contact with Virgin Active (Bourke St.), following a new determination to get fit. It loomed in the background as I perused their site and filled in the contact form. So much so that I shared it with them when they called me back the same day. And again when I had a tour. But my experience with Virgin was nothing like what I experienced elsewhere. It was positive, inclusive, accommodating. They looked to take their cues from me and support my goals rather than impose their own standards. I could talk about the equipment (loads of it), the space (masses of it), or the range of activities (pool/spa/sauna? Check. Indoor rock climbing? Check.) I could mention the cleanliness of the venue or friendliness of the staff. But what it comes down to here is care. Is this a warehouse full of keep fit stuff or does it house a culture of care? It's the latter. Virgin Active have my ongoing business because at each stage they have proven themselves to care about who I am, where I'm at and what I'm aiming for. And that's valuable.

Where's the 0 star rating option?…read more My partner and I signed up for a 7 day free trail online to test out this gym. Upon arrival we were greeted by 2 staff members. We proceeded to tell them we were there for our 7 day free trail which we had singed up for. They asked if we were "local" (assuming our accents let them know we weren't? Not sure). We said we were, but we were moving to Brunswick in the next week, but we still wanted to try out this gym. I guess this set off some alarms for them because they then told us we would have to pay $30 for our entry. Not sure why that would be the case, as there are Goodlifes all over the city, but okay. We then looked at each other to chat to see if we were just going to leave then - but the staff member said she would get Max to help us out. Max came out with a laptop and took us through a questionnaire which had some very odd questions like "do you friends and family support your fitness journey". Max was off putting af. He then took us on a tour of the gym and repeated 3 times how he hates when people come in and start lifting heavy without warming up. Max knew at this point that my partner and I have both been working out for a while, as per the survey before. Max then took us through the membership prices and levels. He asked us if we wanted to sign up, and we said no because we would like to used our 7 day free trail before we decided. He then got weird, asked us for a piece of ID to hold onto (we didn't bring any, so we gave him my credit card), and let us go into the gym. We worked out for 30 minutes or so. Gym was okay.

Goodlife Prahran has everything: -a massive weight area -a extensive group class time table -ample trainers available if you want to invest a little more in your technique and motivation -boxing area -female only room I used my 3 personal training sessions as I felt a Little daunted with the new environment & equipment and since then I haven't looked back.
