The restaurant upstairs is ugly but quirky. And the food ? Ugly, though, and bad. Salad of mini tomatoes and mozzarella (di buffala) of which only the basil was tasty. Pan-fried chanterelles (canned) tasteless, except for the burnt one served with linguini in the microwave sprinkled with a tasteless grana di parmigiana. Put the lid back on and the food stays hot while you try everything on the menu you possibly can. Everything in those jars was exceptional. A few notes: reservations are very required, but if you want to try just walking in, go early. This is how we landed a table and it was worth the gambit. Do not dine in the tourist section. The new part of town is where all of the interesting and amazing restaurants are and the locals are never crossing the bridge to eat. Of all the places we went to, Lila Sosse was the high water mark.

A lot of the dishes are a bit oversold---for example, a basic cheese spaetzle is called "Swabian noodles" on the menu, which is a bit pretentious. Same goes for the pork preserves and hearty beets. Everything is served in glass jars, which is a bit of a flourish. However, the food is good, and the setting is outstanding.
