Let's be honest…read more There's no one who wants to find themselves in the position of being referred to a urologist who specializes in oncology. However, that's precisely where I've been finding myself throughout much of 2023 as I began dealing with a bladder cancer diagnosis. As someone who has long had a variety of health issues, I sure wouldn't say it shook up my perfect little world. However, being diagnosed with cancer is definitely one of those things that hits like a sledgehammer. I was referred to Dr. Rice by the urologist I'd been seeing for only a brief period. She was a relatively new urologist who'd been a resident under Dr. Rice and immediately thought of him when pathology reports came back for bladder cancer. Given the complexity of my situation, she wanted me referred to someone more prepared to address all the possibilities. Prior to arriving at IU Health where he's part of the IU Health Urology practice, Dr. Rice spent 15 years as an active duty surgeon for the U.S. Army and served at Walter Reed Medical Center. Thus, my urologist had felt like he'd be well equipped to deal with my own history of trauma. Indeed, that was very much the case. I went through two outpatient surgeries with Dr. Rice as we first explored the seriousness of the cancer and then the options to treat. We also went through six BCG treatments - considered the "gold standard" for my type of bladder cancer, however, ultimately these did not work. After much consideration, I went with his recommendation to remove the bladder. This would also leave me with an ostomy - certainly the last thing I wanted, but it was also the thing most likely to truly eliminate the cancer. I spent 10 days inpatient and continue to be off work recovering from the surgery - it was more complicated than we expected, yet each step of the way Dr. Rice explained things well, responded well, and even adapted my treatment team to help me emotionally. He did the little things that you always hope a surgeon will do. Perfect? That's hard to imagine, but the surgery went well and he even paid a visit on a day when I was particularly struggling emotionally (I typically saw his resident who was assigned to me - also phenomenal). I'm writing this review at a time when I'm not yet back in action. I'm still figuring out all the practical aspects of physical movement now and life with an ostomy. It's not easy. However, I've received top-notch care from Dr. Rice and wouldn't hesitate to refer to him for someone in a similar situation. For those of us with spina bifida who've had bladder augmentations, the risk of bladder cancer is well documented and I'm fortunate that we caught it earlier and gave me a tremendous chance at recovery. Dr. Rice is both tremendously skilled and very personable. He obviously cares and clearly adapted to my history of trauma by ensuring I was surrounded by certain team members who really helped me relax and focus on healing. His office has been responsive to my needs including filling out paperwork for my employer in a timely manner. While Dr. Rice's focus is urology, he's very skilled in dealing with complex oncologic issues and I definitely recommend. It's likely not an exaggeration to say that he and his team saved my life.

Dr. Orris always conducted himself with the normal professionalism I would expect. Recently, I had a sudden episode of bloody bowl movements. I got an appt early the next day and as my primary Doctor was off on Friday's, I was scheduled with a Nurse Practitioner. The NP ordered a CT scan and a Colonoscopy stat. She also ordered an ultrasound of the kidneys. The CT & Ultrasound revealed a Cyst on the Kidney but they didn't know if that caused the bloody bowel movement. They suggested I make an appt with my Urologist, Dr. Orris. We set up an appointment with Dr. Orris. On March 14th we saw Dr. Orris at 8:50am. He asked us "what's up?". It wasn't clear to me if he knew the results of the CT Scan & Ultrasound. My wife from her notes attempted to explain from the beginning but he cut her off and said he saw the CT scan and the Cyst was normal and didn't contribute to the bloody bowel movement. He also informed us that the Ultrasound was a waste of time and money because the CT showed the Cyst on the kidney, but what I distinctly noted, was his condescending attitude. I got the feeling that he was a bit bothered that we were wasting his time. It felt like a scolding, my wife felt the same. We would never have made an appointment to see him if the nurse practitioner hadn't suggested it. We can only go by what our Doctors tell us, there was no need for Dr. Orris adopt a condescending attitude with us. The interaction wasn't professional and I was taken aback. Perhaps he was having a bad day but, I don't believe having a bad day should affect your professional relationship with a patient. I am going to find another urologist hopefully in the same group however, Urology of Indiana may not want to welcome me back. I posted this in the comment section of the Survey that Urology of Indiana sent by text in mid March indicating I would like them to contact me but for 3 weeks now, I haven't heard a thing back. He is located close to Naab Road and Ascension St. Vincent Hospital on 86th Street. Parking isn't an issue with a large, free parking lot and the building is wheelchair accessible with automated door buttons. Scheduling appointments are easy, wait times on phone and in waiting room is normally short. The office environment is comfortable and the staff is friendly, efficient and responsive. They offer pre-registration, which I highly recommend, as it saves time at your appointment. The office requires face masks and follows all the Covid-19 safety guidelines. Dr. Ludwig is professional but comfortable and amiable. I had a surgical procedure 3 years ago and it went very well. He is respectful, listens well, explains procedures so I can understand and answers all my questions. He always spend an appropriate amount of time at my appointment and doesn't seem rushed. I'm having another procedure in 3 weeks and trust him totally. And those who are interested in his credentials here are the highlights. He joined Urology of Indiana in 2010. Dr. Ludwig graduated with High Distinction from the University of Nebraska with a B.S. in Biology. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City. He completed his internship and residency in Urology at Scott & White Hospital, Texas A & M Health Science Center in Temple, Texas. He is affiliated with Ascension, St. Vincent Hospital and Hancock Regional Hospital. He sees patients in many offices around the Indianapolis Metro areas in addition to offering two integrated Cancer Center for Prostate Cancer. If you need a Urologist I recommend Dr. Ludwig and pre-register to save time.

One of the women who worked there spoke to me with condescension, and seemed highly annoyed as if I couldn't possibly understand the weight of my own choices. It felt less like a medical consultation and more like a lecture from a disapproving grandparent. What made it worse was learning that a friend of mine--barely a year older, in nearly the exact same situation--was approved and received the procedure from this same practice. The double standard was frustrating and honestly insulting. Their communication was also terrible. I tried reaching them for months and only ever got one returned call. I'm not sure what it says about me that I'm the current Yelp Duke of Methodist Hospital…read more Oh wait. I do know what it says. It says I'm getting older with spina bifida and I've had a lot of recent health concerns. After dealing with cancer in 2023, follow-up care revealed the presence of a nice collection of kidney stones. My oncological urologist referred me to Dr. Rivera, a member of the same IU Health - Urology practice who specializes in kidney stones. As the previous doctor had completed all the necessary exams and tests, Dr. Rivera could eventually pick things up and move forward fairly quickly (though there was a couple month wait for the actual procedure). I went in for surgery this past week (Lithotripsy was not an option for me) and spent one night inpatient. The surgery itself went quite well. I'm currently home recovering. I made it known early on that I needed trauma-informed care due to my background. Dr. Rivera did a nice job of making things happen including ensuring an available female anesthesiologist. Dr. Rivera explained things well and took time to answer questions. He leans toward the cautious side and was obviously aware of my history. We had one appointment prior to the actual surgery date and will have another one in a month or so. He made it known that he was experienced with ostomies (which I have) and spina bifida (which I also have). If anything, I think the trauma piece threw him off a bit, though he adapted well. My discharge instructions were clear. I also appreciated that he actually visited the morning after surgery - sometimes at IU, you only get the resident (who also visited). If this review were based solely on surgery performance, it would be a 5-star review. However, as is often true with IU for me, there were a couple administrative glitches. First, I was scheduled for a "virtual" appointment with him for pre-op. Nearly the entire world recognizes virtual as meaning electronic, however, this ended up being a telephonic visit. Theoretically, this could have been better if made more affordable. However, my insurance (one of Indiana's leading insurers and one he should have been well aware of) doesn't cover telephonic visits and thus was denied. I ended up with a full office visit cost that was really unwarranted considering it was his office that scheduled it virtually. So, that's something I'd watch for as I don't know too many insurance companies that will pay for a phone call. In fact, I've never had a physician charge for one (including my other urologist in his same practice). That was a healthy out of pocket expense that didn't make me happy. Also, I spent far too long in recovery because there were no beds (and was told at one point I could be there all night). This wasn't the doctor's fault, of course, but my attitude is simple - don't do the surgery if you can't actually treat the patient. My attitude with IU tends to be "Great clinicians, horrible administrative policies." In some ways, that's true here and it's definitely what keeps this from being a 5-star experience. However, I refuse to go below 4-stars - quite honestly, the surgery went really well and addressed significant concerns quite well. He did the job I needed him to do - he's knowledgeable, incredibly personable, and adapts to the individual's needs. It would easily be 5-stars if IU's own policies and procedures would back up his quality care.
