Let's be honest…read more There's no one who wants to find themselves in the position of being referred to a urologist who specializes in oncology. However, that's precisely where I've been finding myself throughout much of 2023 as I began dealing with a bladder cancer diagnosis. As someone who has long had a variety of health issues, I sure wouldn't say it shook up my perfect little world. However, being diagnosed with cancer is definitely one of those things that hits like a sledgehammer. I was referred to Dr. Rice by the urologist I'd been seeing for only a brief period. She was a relatively new urologist who'd been a resident under Dr. Rice and immediately thought of him when pathology reports came back for bladder cancer. Given the complexity of my situation, she wanted me referred to someone more prepared to address all the possibilities. Prior to arriving at IU Health where he's part of the IU Health Urology practice, Dr. Rice spent 15 years as an active duty surgeon for the U.S. Army and served at Walter Reed Medical Center. Thus, my urologist had felt like he'd be well equipped to deal with my own history of trauma. Indeed, that was very much the case. I went through two outpatient surgeries with Dr. Rice as we first explored the seriousness of the cancer and then the options to treat. We also went through six BCG treatments - considered the "gold standard" for my type of bladder cancer, however, ultimately these did not work. After much consideration, I went with his recommendation to remove the bladder. This would also leave me with an ostomy - certainly the last thing I wanted, but it was also the thing most likely to truly eliminate the cancer. I spent 10 days inpatient and continue to be off work recovering from the surgery - it was more complicated than we expected, yet each step of the way Dr. Rice explained things well, responded well, and even adapted my treatment team to help me emotionally. He did the little things that you always hope a surgeon will do. Perfect? That's hard to imagine, but the surgery went well and he even paid a visit on a day when I was particularly struggling emotionally (I typically saw his resident who was assigned to me - also phenomenal). I'm writing this review at a time when I'm not yet back in action. I'm still figuring out all the practical aspects of physical movement now and life with an ostomy. It's not easy. However, I've received top-notch care from Dr. Rice and wouldn't hesitate to refer to him for someone in a similar situation. For those of us with spina bifida who've had bladder augmentations, the risk of bladder cancer is well documented and I'm fortunate that we caught it earlier and gave me a tremendous chance at recovery. Dr. Rice is both tremendously skilled and very personable. He obviously cares and clearly adapted to my history of trauma by ensuring I was surrounded by certain team members who really helped me relax and focus on healing. His office has been responsive to my needs including filling out paperwork for my employer in a timely manner. While Dr. Rice's focus is urology, he's very skilled in dealing with complex oncologic issues and I definitely recommend. It's likely not an exaggeration to say that he and his team saved my life.

Dr. Orris always conducted himself with the normal professionalism I would expect. Recently, I had a sudden episode of bloody bowl movements. I got an appt early the next day and as my primary Doctor was off on Friday's, I was scheduled with a Nurse Practitioner. The NP ordered a CT scan and a Colonoscopy stat. She also ordered an ultrasound of the kidneys. The CT & Ultrasound revealed a Cyst on the Kidney but they didn't know if that caused the bloody bowel movement. They suggested I make an appt with my Urologist, Dr. Orris. We set up an appointment with Dr. Orris. On March 14th we saw Dr. Orris at 8:50am. He asked us "what's up?". It wasn't clear to me if he knew the results of the CT Scan & Ultrasound. My wife from her notes attempted to explain from the beginning but he cut her off and said he saw the CT scan and the Cyst was normal and didn't contribute to the bloody bowel movement. He also informed us that the Ultrasound was a waste of time and money because the CT showed the Cyst on the kidney, but what I distinctly noted, was his condescending attitude. I got the feeling that he was a bit bothered that we were wasting his time. It felt like a scolding, my wife felt the same. We would never have made an appointment to see him if the nurse practitioner hadn't suggested it. We can only go by what our Doctors tell us, there was no need for Dr. Orris adopt a condescending attitude with us. The interaction wasn't professional and I was taken aback. Perhaps he was having a bad day but, I don't believe having a bad day should affect your professional relationship with a patient. I am going to find another urologist hopefully in the same group however, Urology of Indiana may not want to welcome me back. I posted this in the comment section of the Survey that Urology of Indiana sent by text in mid March indicating I would like them to contact me but for 3 weeks now, I haven't heard a thing back. He is located close to Naab Road and Ascension St. Vincent Hospital on 86th Street. Parking isn't an issue with a large, free parking lot and the building is wheelchair accessible with automated door buttons. Scheduling appointments are easy, wait times on phone and in waiting room is normally short. The office environment is comfortable and the staff is friendly, efficient and responsive. They offer pre-registration, which I highly recommend, as it saves time at your appointment. The office requires face masks and follows all the Covid-19 safety guidelines. Dr. Ludwig is professional but comfortable and amiable. I had a surgical procedure 3 years ago and it went very well. He is respectful, listens well, explains procedures so I can understand and answers all my questions. He always spend an appropriate amount of time at my appointment and doesn't seem rushed. I'm having another procedure in 3 weeks and trust him totally. And those who are interested in his credentials here are the highlights. He joined Urology of Indiana in 2010. Dr. Ludwig graduated with High Distinction from the University of Nebraska with a B.S. in Biology. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City. He completed his internship and residency in Urology at Scott & White Hospital, Texas A & M Health Science Center in Temple, Texas. He is affiliated with Ascension, St. Vincent Hospital and Hancock Regional Hospital. He sees patients in many offices around the Indianapolis Metro areas in addition to offering two integrated Cancer Center for Prostate Cancer. If you need a Urologist I recommend Dr. Ludwig and pre-register to save time.

I was referred to Dr. Bock by my primary care physician to explore issues related to my spina bifida along with chronic infection issues. Due to some trauma in my background, I typically request a female physician or, when that's not possible, make clear a need for trauma-informed care. Dr. Bock was also an option under my insurance company. I was able to get an appointment fairly quickly. With my first two appointments actually being in the Carmel office, my third being at IU Hospital - West, and my fourth via telehealth with the Avon office. I believe that Dr. Bock is fairly new as an MD, though she completed both her internship in surgery and residency here at IU. I had a handful of things I really liked about her after my first appointment, though I'll also acknowledge I wasn't quite sure at that point. She is very matter-of-fact, though in an accessible way. This can come off very abrasively, however, it doesn't with her. She is very good at clinical speak, though makes the language generally accessible. She's also very consistent with saying "What questions do you have?" Her appointments tend to be right about 20 minutes - I have a slight cognitive processing delay and that can make processing info difficult, but I appreciated that she tries to make sure there's time for questions. Dr. Bock knew fairly quickly she wanted to do a cystoscopy - fairly standard with spina bifida. I'm fairly resistant to this type of test, but I'd met my deductible for the year and I also knew I'd been having enough issues that it was a good idea. Plus, I felt like having a female physician might help my comfort level. She ordered an MRI and noted that I'd come back into the office for the cystoscopy. The cystoscopy was my second appointment, but due to some of my own issues it wasn't successful in the office. I appreciated that Dr. Bock explained this, though this meant likely outpatient surgery. I wasn't thrilled with going all the way out to Avon, but I wanted to get it ASAP (or before I chickened out) and in this benefit year. We discussed the procedure fairly thoroughly and it was noted a conscious sedation would be used. About 10 days later, I experienced Dr. Bock again for the procedure. The anesthetic procedure changed a couple more times (much to my frustration). However, Dr. Bock made sure to see me before the surgery, before I was put out in the OR, and after the surgery. She explained the results well (though perhaps a bit too much info was provided to a friend who was there as my driver and not as my next of kin or such). There was also a momentary frustration when I noted that I didn't have anyone staying with me for 24 hours after the surgery (I'd told the pre-assessment nurse several days earlier). This threatened to delay the surgery, but I assured them I'd have someone with me for a couple hours, had an emergency button at home, and had friends checking on me. My final appointment with Dr. Bock occurred via telehealth to receive surgery results - not particularly good news that meant I needed to be referred out to someone else. I was a bit surprised that this was handled via telehealth (which had been suggested by Dr. Bock's office and not requested by me), however, this gave me a glimpse into a more "human" Dr. Bock as she stopped using words like "patient" in favor of "people" or "person." She was very thorough in her explanation including why she needed to refer me out. She felt like I would do well with someone she had interned under and has initiated the referral. She also let me know she would be having a conversation with this doctor. She left open the idea that I could potentially return to her in the future once certain concerns are addressed, though my sense was this was likely more for soothing my anxiety than actually true. While Dr. Bock has interest in fairly significant urological conditions, at this point in her career she's mainly focused on general urology and does appear to work with both men and women. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her for general urological issues, though for more significant concerns my guess is she'd be likely to make a referral at this point in her career. She was very matter-of-fact but compassionate and gently moved me toward having a procedure I very much needed but didn't want to have. She understood my issues and honored them and approached my care with clinical expertise and an understanding of trauma-informed care. I'd be surprised if she doesn't become a 5-star physician, a nice weaving together of knowledge and compassion. I'm very comfortable rating her at 4-stars at this point and would easily return to her for general urological needs.

I've decided to edit my review because, upon reflection, I realized that my review of her as a physician was being tainted by my concerns about the overall practice. While she certainly had an influence of practice standards, ultimately some of my negative experiences occurred as she was transitioning out. Thus, she's not really to blame. Truthfully, I loved working with Dr. Edwards. She was my second physician with the practice and I immediately felt a click with her as we shared similar personalities. She also tapped quickly into my resistance to seeking help and worked hard to build trust. I became a "priority" for her and she made it well known that if I called I was to get through and to get scheduled. There's no question that she went above and beyond with me on several occasions, though I've never been one to go to the doctor on an incredibly regular basis. She made note once of probably trusting my own opinions about my care, I liked that she was also confident enough to challenge me when necessary. By the time we did actually have a semi-emergency once, I trusted her enough to follow-up on a urology referral for which I was truly hesitant. It's difficult to get my trust and Dr. Edwards truly had it. I believed she cared and trusted her opinion. As a result, I did more follow-up and grew to feel like my follow-up care was important. It was toward the end that I struggled, moreso with the practice than actually with her. During one time when she was out, I ended up seeing another physician in the practice with whom I just plain didn't click at all. My guess is that this was around the time Dr. Edwards decided to leave, because not long after I received a letter informing me she was leaving the practice and that they didn't have anyone else to follow me. Negligently (and I complained), they referred me to four possibilities - 3 in Hamilton County and one pediatrician. I live in Lawrence and am 50. So, while I had issues with the actual practice I really valued the positive physician/patient relationship I had with Dr. Edwards. I ultimately ended up leaving Community Health Network due to the poor referrals and lack of follow-up, but I think Dr. Edward's influence helped me determine the next appropriate setting and made me better informed to find the right physician for me with whom I continue to be seen.
