The good news is that Kaiser is cheap, a great value for the healthy Medicare patient. The bad…read morenews: you get what you pay for. Kaiser's HMO model for Medicare Advantage puts too much weight on the patient. With one 20 minute personal checkup a year, you never get to know your primary care physician & vise versa. Getting specialist care is an ordeal that requires patients to be pushy. It took me a year of insisting to get a referral to a urologist. Also, twice, in two annual checkups, my PCP suggested cortisone for a sore hip, but never followed up. He authorized only an x-ray for ligament damage in my jaw, a soft tissue injury -- which predictably didn't discover much. When he recommended physical therapy for the jaw, I insisted on an MRI. Eventually that led to a diagnosis, but it took wat too much effort. The three PCPs I've had either lied to me or dissembled in other ways. The specialists are not that great. The aforementioned urologist exam caused a urinary tract infection. Rather than provide an antibiotic, he sent me to a sneezy, crowded clinic, where, after waiting hours with a rising fever, I was finally prescribed one. The labs can be crowded and chaotic. The out-of-network referrals were better. Virginia Hospital Center replaced my aortic valve with zero hassle. The facial surgeon seemed pretty good. Also, note that if you are among the 17.5% of patients who take zolpidem (Ambien) for sleep, the system will try to push you out. One calculated inconvenience is that you are ineligible even for light pain relievers following a procedure (thankfully, Kaiser does not perform open heart surgery). Another is that Kaiser uniquely requires you sign a release granting permission for snap urine analysis tests. Until this year, they had never exercised this authority, but my current PCP, Dr. Pamela Coffee (aka Nurse Ratched, MD) wields it with glee. After the third such indignity, I'm willing to pay more for better care.

Beware of TIAA-CREF and HHMI Retirement Fund Restrictions!…read more I worked for HHMI for 23 years at a satellite site in California, diligently saving for retirement through my 401(k) for over 15 years before transitioning to a 403(b) with TIAA-CREF. I trusted that my hard-earned money would be accessible when I needed it most. Unfortunately, after COVID, I made some adjustments to my account and clearly stated on a recorded line that I needed to continue receiving my $2,500 monthly payments. The customer service representative assured me this would be taken care of--but it wasn't. Now, I find myself locked into an annuity for another five years with no way out, while my retirement funds are essentially held hostage. To make matters worse, my account is growing at an insultingly low rate of just $700 every three months, and then I'm hit with a 20% tax when I withdraw anything. This is my money, earned over decades of work, yet I am being denied access when I need it the most. I am also a fire victim in desperate need of these funds, but HHMI's loan administrator, Ms. Whaley, refuses to allow access, citing IRS rules--but is this truly the IRS, or is it HHMI's own policy designed to keep retirees from their rightful savings? I've searched for resources to help, but I'm hitting dead ends. If you are considering TIAA-CREF or relying on HHMI for your retirement funds, think twice. Their lack of flexibility and misleading customer service could leave you trapped, just like me. Does anyone have advice or experience navigating this? What are my legal rights here? #RetirementScam #HHMI #TIAA-CREF #WhereIsMyMoney #RetireeRights

Today, I got the chance to experience what the nation's top medical research agency had to offer. First & foremost, if you do not have to drive, PLEASE take Metro...hindsight regarding parking is most absolutely 20/20. Plus a little exercise doesn't hurt anybody. I had an interview today, yet not before the 'screening for access' took place: Pull vehicle forward. Turn off engine. Leave door open. & then take all of your belongings, including every piece of computer & or electronic devices on your person. While the vehicle was getting screened, so was I. After a few minutes of having my ID scanned more ways than one, providing the small piece of paper from the initial license plate log in, I was giving a temporary visitor pass with a full headshot & my name displayed. I was then allowed to go on my way. A way that took 30 minutes of following the map to the dedicated building. Actually, locating the building only took 10 minutes with a couple of u-turns here & there, yet finding parking was the most time consumption. Kudos to the NIH police officer off the Old G-Town Road gateway entry for pointing me in the right direction to a MLP (Multi-Level Parking garage) that had spaces available. I'm sure if I passed him one more time, he would not have been as friendly. :-) Although I arrived 45 minutes early, I was now against the clock from finding the building & a parking space. & in clutch mode, the kind spirited parking attendant MLP-6 heard my internal plea & told me to leave my keys with her & to be on my way...THANK YOU Ms. T -working the AM shift! After a few more friendly fingers pointing me in the right direction, I arrived to the laboratory, one of many massive laboratories housed in one building. Well perhaps I knocked on the wrong door at first, yet the Lab Techs & eventually the Lab Manager were all very nice turning me around to the appropriate laboratory. Every facet of a person I crossed paths with today, whether maintenance, law enforcement-security check in, clinical, scientific, & even an Educator, was simply pleasant & helpful. I can only imagine the camaraderie amongst everyone within these 27 different institutes that makes up NIH. & their own personal stamp in discovering innovations to improve health & or save lives. What an amazing & well manicured campus of greenery, LEED buildings, handicap parking spaces, parking buildings (mostly for permit holders), LED crosswalks, & of course the never ending maze of getting around.

Driving and parking can be tricky as its right off 355, I'd encourage you to take public transit if you can. There are many, many buildings including a hospital onsite as well as many other offices. When arriving if you're not a staff member you'll need to go in through one of the main entry buildings. There is one literally steps from the Medical Center Station, be sure to bring a government issued photo ID, and the security screening process is similar to what you'd encounter at the airport. Depending on the time of day the lines can be pretty long. Once through the security area you head out the door and there are various shuttle buses that will take you around campus, just be sure to take the correct bus as some buses make stops to other NIH buildings not on the main campus. This place is pretty self contained, there's cafeterias in some of the buildings, a credit union on-site, and plenty of nice paths to walk around. On the campus you'll find a unique mix of really old buildings, mid-century buildings, and newer modern buildings. I was in one of the mid-century buildings and it needed some refreshing. I was here for a meeting and the meeting facilities were nice although basic which is what I've come to expect at a government facility. Although the room was spacious and accommodated the group that was in attendance. Overall a nice place, people who worked there were approachable as I wasn't quite sure where I was headed. Although if you're there for an event or meeting, I'd advise getting there at least 45 minutes ahead of time if you want to be on time.

I then tried to reschedule with another location in DC but they refused to honor the price I had agreed to pay for the original treatment. This review does not reflect the amazing and professional service both Dr. Sonde, and Katie have given, but the lack of communication from new management. Once new management took over, and electronically held all of our medical records, upon my appointment with the new management, it took over one hour for me to get checked in. Unfortunately, front desk, staff could have helped speed up the process and given me the correct number to help expedite this within 30 seconds, rather than waiting over an hour for someone to make the check in process easier. I am now in my second phase of my vein treatments, but I have now been rescheduled two times due to unexpected office closures, and or staffing issues. I am not sure what to think of the new management, but when asked why I am not being communicated about office closures, they say they are just "guessing" that they just didn't get a hold of me. I am not thrilled with the new management company for this clinic, so I would advise waiting until they get it together.

In the meantime, they instructed me to go to Urgent Care or the ER! Several other times, owing to minor issues such as ear infections and conjunctivitis, they insisted I do a Telehealth appointment or otherwise, go to Urgent Care or the ER. Further, annual physicals have not been comprehensive. Moreover, for my first physical with Barnard Medical, they assigned a medical student to conduct it, in its entirety (w/o any other doctors present). In addition, this was despite the fact that I had requested, in writing in my medical records, that I did not agree to be seen by medical students. It appears as if the doctors rarely even come into the office! The lovely Nurse Practitioner, Kristine, is the gem that seems to hold the office together! She shows both care and concern, and although there is a lag time to see her, too, at least you can get an appointment with her in person (eventually).
