If you're looking for the stereotypical bad Dutch doctor experience, look no further. My husband…read morelikes them for some reason, because he was raised to be a medical masochist and receive no medical care unless he was basically dying. But I have higher standards for my medical professionals, such as them doing something, anything, and not just shrugging their shoulders at me when I come to them with issues. Oh, and it would also be nice not to deal with receptionists who diagnose you over the phone and tell you that you don't need to come in. And then when you do insist on coming in, they harass you in the waiting room saying "There is nothing wrong with your child! Why are you here?" As if they got a full medical education sitting behind their desk and answering phones. Who needs to talk to an actual doctor when you can talk to a Dutch doctor's receptionist! I went here for a few years in spite of the terrible care, due to not being able to find another good doctor in the neighborhood. But the straw that broke the camel's back for me was when I came in with bronchitis with my daughter. She received antibiotics and I was told that I do not have bronchitis so I received no medicine at all. I've had bronchitis several times in my life, I know what it looks like. A few days later I wasn't able to get out of bed anymore because the bronchitis had progressed to pneumonia. So I went back again for care, and asked why she hadn't given me antibiotics a few days before, because then I knew I had bronchitis, and if she did something back then my husband wouldn't need to be taking off of work to take care of me and our child, since I couldn't do anything anymore. The younger doctor got very mad at me for even asking this question. She was so angry that she prescribed me an antibiotic that I was allergic to, and I didn't discover this until I had a bad rash all over my body! She knew I was allergic, it was in my file and on her computer screen, but she was too angry to do her job properly because I questioned her. Between the pneumonia and the allergic reaction I was in bed for most of a month for something that should have been a week or two of reduced activity at most. Because I couldn't take care of my small child anymore, my husband used up all his vacation time and ended up getting reduced salary for some of the days that he had to take off of work. It was a big mess, and it was basically for nothing. So I would steer clear of this medical practice if I were you. This is one of those times when something is not "better than getting a sharp stick in the eye".

When I moved to Amsterdam from London my relocation agent had enrolled me at this health center for…read moremy GP. So never having a real say in who I wanted my GP to be I could not have been happier with the choice made by my agent. It has now been over 5 years and I have heard many of my friends complain about the healthcare in the Netherlands. Well ladies and gents, if you want: - to be listened too -don't want absurd waiting times for appointments - don't want to feel rushed during your appointment - action taken on your behave - feel like you are being taken seriously Then this is your place! I can't speak for all the GP's there but my GP Dr. Linnebank is a trooper. To give you all a clear example: I fell down the stairs at work and couldn't put down my foot anymore. The first aid consultants at work had urged me to go to the hospital or see my GP. So I called the Center the assistant was super understanding and soothing. She listened to my story and then told me to come over as soon as I could even though the Dr. was busy and my fall wasn't exactly live threatening she would make sure that he would see me quickly in between. When I got there (carried in by my cab driver ;) )She sat me down and called my GP who was in another appointment. After a short wait he finished his appointment and helped me straight away even though the waiting room was full. He assessed my foot and body to make sure I didn't have any other injuries. After which he concluded that he wanted me to go to the hospital, so he called the hospital himself to make sure they knew I was coming and could be helped quickly. About 4 weeks after all this I went back to see my GP as my foot wasn't getting any better. If any it was getting worse and I couldn't stand on it. Again I was helped quick. My GP concluded that he didn't agree with the specialists in the hospital and wanted me to go and see the specialist again. He picked up the phone himself and called the specialist directly in the hospital. The specialist argued that I just need to see a fysio but this answer wasn't good enough. My GP insisted that they have to reassess and a couple days later I have an appointment again. Now for Dutch standards this kind of personally help is rare and it is what sets this health-center apart from other GP offices. Only negative: the main entrance is not accessible by car, so in this case and not being able to walk was a bit of an issue.
