The woman in billing…read morecould not figure out how to properly bill my insurance... and instead of calling BCBS to sort it out and figure out why her claims kept getting denied, she told me that I must have been lying about having medical insurance and that I couldn't be seen until I settled my $1200 balance. Keep in mind that I had been in contact with BCBS multiple times who explained to me that the issue was on her end and not with my coverage, because she was filing the claims incorrectly. When I tried to tell her this and requested her to call BCBS, she told me she "couldn't get ahold of them". If you're in medical billing and can't get ahold of a major insurance company, maybe you're in the wrong line of work. Ultimately, they kicked me out after weeks of going back and forth with them because I told that their incompetence wasn't my problem. About two weeks after kicking me out, I was notified that my balance was settled and *GASP* my insurance approved the claim once it was filed correctly! But thank you for denying me medical care as a pregnant Type 1 diabetic for absolutely no reason other than your own delusion. Avoid this place at all costs.

My friend initially visited the emergency department on Friday for a medical issue and was sent home with hydrocortisone cream. Three days later, we had to return because the treatment had not resolved the problem. Rather than providing a meaningful solution, we were told that the hospital was not "equipped" to handle urology cases and that we would need to seek care elsewhere. My friend was then prescribed Lotrimin, an over-the-counter antifungal medication. Two emergency department visits, two topical treatments, and still no meaningful resolution to the underlying issue. How frustrating is it to seek emergency medical attention twice, only to leave feeling like absolutely nothing was accomplished? However, what disturbed me even more was witnessing how another patient was treated. There were literally only TWO people in the waiting room. TWO. One was a woman experiencing what appeared to be excruciating abdominal pain, and the other was someone who, from what I understood, had also been seen at this facility on Friday and had to return. This was not a waiting room overflowing with dozens of patients. There were two people waiting, yet somehow there appeared to be absolutely no urgency whatsoever. The woman was crying hysterically, screaming in pain, and visibly struggling to compose herself. These were not ordinary cries of discomfort. These were heartbreaking, bloodcurdling screams from someone who appeared to be in absolute agony. From what I overheard, she had recently given birth, which made the situation even more alarming. At one point, she was crouched on the floor, clutching herself in pain, desperately trying to find some relief. She wasn't even offered a wheelchair as she struggled to make her way toward triage. I watched this woman suffer for approximately 45 minutes without witnessing anyone provide meaningful assistance. Forty-five minutes of crying, screaming, and obvious distress, with only two people in the waiting room. When she was speaking with someone in triage, I overheard a staff member telling her to calm down so she could answer questions. I understand that medical professionals need information to assess patients, but where is the compassion? This woman was sobbing uncontrollably and could barely communicate through her pain. There is a difference between trying to obtain necessary medical information and making a suffering patient feel dismissed. To make matters worse, after my friend was discharged, he found himself locked out of the lobby, with nobody available to let him back in. Where was everyone? Already frustrated by everything I had witnessed, I approached the triage desk and asked whether there was only one doctor available. Instead of simply answering my question, the woman responded, "Why, what do you need?" in an unnecessarily hostile tone. I explained that there was a woman in the waiting room crying in extreme pain and questioned why there appeared to be no urgency in helping her. Rather than acknowledging my concern, the staff member began arguing with me. When I also mentioned that my friend had been locked out of the lobby, she responded that she "didn't have eyes over there." The attitude was unbelievable. I eventually told her that the place was a joke, and rather than addressing the concerns I raised, she called security on me. Imagine expressing concern about a woman screaming in pain in an emergency department and having security called on you instead of receiving a professional response. I understand that emergency departments use triage protocols and that patients are prioritized based on medical severity, not simply how many people are waiting. But that does not excuse the dismissive attitudes, poor communication, and apparent lack of compassion that I witnessed. I cannot speak to what medical assessments were happening behind the scenes, but I can speak to what I personally witnessed. And what I witnessed was deeply disturbing. The fact that another patient had apparently returned after a Friday visit, just as my friend had, only added to my concerns about the quality of care being provided. McAllen Medical Center needs to take a serious look at its emergency department. Patients do not come to the ER for entertainment. They come because they are frightened, in pain, and seeking medical help. They deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, and professionalism. An emergency department should be a place where people feel safe seeking help, not a place where patients feel ignored and those advocating for them are met with hostility. Based on my experience, I have absolutely no confidence in this emergency department, and I would not recommend it to anyone.
