As I have very complex health problems I needed a family doctor. I was fortunate enough to get to be Dr Botha at Santimed to be my family doctor. I am that person who can write the uncommon side effects warnings on medication. It is a case of that is not supposed to happen and then surprise it happens to me. Dr Botha really goes out of his way to help. Unfortunately he is also part of the Alberta Health system, so even if he wanted to he can't just jump the line with referrals, he has to follow the rules set by Alberta Health. In the more than 20 years I had been living in Calgary, I have learned that the politicians that control Alberta Health haven't got the faintest idea of medicine. They are merely a lot of politicians, who are trying their best to sound important, but only goes on to complicate even the simplest, most cost efficient solution, with so much rules that medicine becomes a very expensive, time consuming circus of expense.

Doctor called at 3pm while I'm still at work so I miss the call...when you call back they have an "oh well attitude you missed your appointment". They need to revamp the front end staff. Need to find a different doctor due to too many issues trying to get pass the games at the front.

Their organization is not the greatest either, as I was finally able to get through to them yesterday, I was told I would receive my prescription refill today-- and to put it lightly, I'm now on 4 days without my daily prescription that is quite dangerous to stop taking, and as of right now, I have been on the line, listening to their line ring for 14 minutes and 27 seconds, to be exact. I guess I will just deal with the life threatening side effects? But the clinic has 2 problems. Says it's a Walk In but they do everything in their power not to let you walk in. I don't mind waiting, I inderstand they're busy and I need to wait when I walk in. But sometimes unforeseen health issues can happen over night or the day before and you need a walk in. The second problem is one of the receptionists. Bad attitude, you always feel like you're a nuisance she can't wait to get rid of. Very cold and detached, borderline rude. Once she made me state outloud I had a UTI infront of a patient.. She kept asking me to say it louder .Has zero sensibility. She has nothing to do in the healthcare business. She'd refer to me by my deadname that she clearly saw made me extremely uncomfortable, repeatedly, loudly for everyone to hear. And then she went yelling out my deadname, repeatedly, out loud to the doctor, asking him if they can provide services for me. I was then refused services, because my Alberta health card had my deadname on it. And my new legal name is different. I left in an extremely distressed state. Some of the staff could've been a lot more tactful and educated in their behaviour and approach towards me. Even if they had to turn me down, it could be done a lot more differently and not led me to the distressed, dysphoria induced state that they led me to. Technically, Triggering some of my conditions and causing me further harm, as medical personnel...for the conditions that I came to get assessed for, in order to receive my drivers medical examination. 0/10 would not recommend. Yes, this is controversial for some…read more I support universal health care, but don't quite understand why it should come at a universal low standard. My dentist calls me every 4 months for a cleaning or checkup. When was the last time I had a blood test.?... 10 years! I know many have adequate medical care through established family practices via standard health care, but some don't. I did not. I think I knew something was not right and when I couldn't arrange a standard medical exam through my MD (after 1 year of trying and two misconnects) then I signed up for Copeman. After the intake questions and battery of exams and tests, it was found that essentially everything was off the charts. I was actually in pretty bad shape. Fortunately things were found early enough, I received some expert advice, and was able to get some lifestyle choices turned around before it was too late. The actual facility is centrally located, has easy off-street parking with nice (modern and clean!) offices and waiting room. There are nutritionists, physiotherapists, exercise kinesiologists, nurses, lab staff and counsellors available, but most importantly, physicians who actually take their hand off of the door handle when they talk to you. For lab tests, samples are all taken on site. This is the way health care should be. It is not luxurious, unless you compare it to the standard squalid waiting rooms at physicians' offices, usually located in dilapidated medical buildings with antique furnishings and equipment from the 60s. How we have come to accept the current state as acceptable is bewildering to me. While I feel a twinge of liberal guilt about the whole thing, this is a complicated issue with no easy answers. I was not willing to die waiting for politicians and government to figure it out. At $4K/ first year and $2.5K/year following (there are also family plans), it is certainly not for everyone. I am a supporter, and while this kind of service is not the answer to our current delivery problems, it just might be part of the solution.
