ZERO STARS! I made an appointment several weeks ago to talk with Lisa about my mother's situation... Lisa the owner of Medi-Cal Consulting Services called me 21 minutes after our appointment time. When I brought up the fact that Ihad been waiting over 20 minutes, because she did not, she proceeded to inform me that there was a "disclaimer" in the appointment setting email they sent me that said her call may be 15-20 minutes late. That email was sent to me several weeks ago. A courteous and professional move would have been to apologize for being 21 minutes late in calling me REGARDLESS of the email. A simple THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE would have gone a long way. That definitely set us off on the wrong footing. We spoke for a few minutes and I mentioned that I spoke to another consultant a few months ago at a different agency so had some knowledge but I certainly didnt profess to be an expert and the timing wasn't right back then. She quickly quipped "who did you talk to, who are you shopping me against"? Then was offended that I could not recall the company name... I mentioned I'd be happy to look it up but later. Toward the abrupt end to our call, after she told me her price of $3,000 to apply for MediCal for my mom and then a subsequent $1,000 annually and all the services she'd provide, she spoke of protection in the Case Management she would provide; and potentially stepping in to file appeals when the State of California erroneously changes things and on an individual's plan. I proceeded in asking questions about how many cases she manages (which she could not tell me) and what percentage of them needed her team to "step in" to file appeals... She couldn't answer either and got offended and argumentative. As a somewhat intelligent person, I was simply trying to assess my risk with Medi-Cal and assess the value of the perceived protection her team would provide for the $3,000 Initial fee and then $1,000 redetermination fee annually. I was simply trying to gather information to make the best decisions for what my mother needs. I was appalled when she got all bent out of shape, abruptly ended and hung up on me. I can't say enough wonderful things about Medi-Cal Consulting Services. I have worked with them personally now for nearly two years as well as my daughter. The entire staff is amazing. They are kind, attentive, compassionate, professional and that is just to name a few. The owner, Lisa, knows the law like the back of her hand and will go to bat for you if by chance something is a miss. That of course has never been the case for us. Lisa is a wealth of knowledge and has been an incredible resource from day one--even during the consultation before any commitments were made. She provided simple and straightforward answers to the questions I had prepared. They even checked in with us when we were struggling with some administrative issues with a facility just to make sure we were OK. Before the consult, the first step was to fill out a quick questionnaire and schedule an appointment date. Second, I had a quick call with someone to verify information about income, assets, etc. Then, there is a required video they ask you to watch before the consult. My consult with Lisa was so helpful. I've been in a state of stress for months worrying about multiple family members. And after speaking with her about one of them (my uncle), I was left with a much better understanding of potential options but also what I needed to do next to see how they could best help him. We reached out to Lisa R. when our mother had a stroke last year and we know she would not be applicable for Medi-cal until the law changed in 2024. We needed guidance as to solutions for that current year 2023 as well assistance with the application for 2024. Lisa was professional, direct and available for all our questions and provided options. My review is long but worth the read to really show how good Medi-Cal Consulting Services truly is. If you need Medi-Cal please read this!!! You will not regret it. My dad had a big stroke in August and was in the ICU for 2 months with a lot of complications. At the time my dad only had Medicare. The social services representative from the hospital immediately told us that we were going to need Medi-Cal because my dad was going to need a lot of medical services if he was ever going to have a chance of some recovery. Medicare was only going to cover 100 days of nursing care. The Social Services person gave me a phone number to call some agency, in Los Angeles that would help us apply. I called them and went through a screening process of a few minutes. Once I told them that my dad had a rental property, they said they could not help us, and my dad would never qualify. We were left feeling very helpless and stressed thinking of how we would cover the medical bills. My dad improved to the point of being discharged after almost 10 weeks of being in the hospital and was sent to an Acute Hospital. So we began to worry as the 100 days of coverage began without my dad's health improving. The social worker at the acute nursing asked about Medi-Cal and again stated that we were going to need it. I told her about the place we called, and she suggested that we speak with an Elder Care Attorney. I called an attorney she suggested in Torrance. We met with him and his plans to get my dad coverage were shocking. His first suggestion was to have my parents divorced and have my dad's property changed to my mom as the only owner. My mom was immediately disgusted by this suggestion. The second plan he suggested was to have the property gifted to me. I later called my tax guy and was told what the severe tax repercussions and headache this would be. Also, the cost the attorney was charging to help was very high. Needless to say we left that place and never even thought of calling him back. I looked on YELP for another Elder Care Attorney. I found one in OC. I called and told them my story. They suggested I call Medi-Cal Consulting Services. My first reaction, I told them "No, I already called a different consulting service, and they said my dad would not qualify, I need an attorney." The attorney said "Call Medi-Cal Consulting Services!!!!" So, I called. I went through the screening process with Lisa and was told they would come up with a plan based on my dad's situation, income, property, assets, etc. and would get back to me. Adrianna was assigned to my case. She told me her plan and it was nothing crazy like the attorney had suggested. The county dragged their feet on the application and Adrianna fought for my dad, filed appeals until my dad was able to get his application accepted. Unfortunately, he did pass away before we could use any of the benefits. I called Adrianna and told her of my dad's passing. I asked her if we could now focus on my mom and get her the Medi-Cal coverage. They got on it right away and incredibly enough, less than 3 weeks after she started on my mom's case, she now has Medi-Cal coverage! This was the most stressful time of my life. I would give 0 stars if i could. I had appointment today and the rep was about 40 minutes late. When i complained about this they chastised me and said the the email they sent said they may be a little bit late. I said 40 min is not a little bit late to which i was told "Read the email". The rep gave me irrelevant information about Veterans benefits and continued to push on despite me saying I already looked into this. The reps manner swung like a pendulum veering from nice/chatty to rude and insulting. When i gave her yearly totals for income she told me i should have spent the 40 min while i was waiting getting the numbers ready for her. At this point I hung up. Save your $2000 and go to someone who treats their customers with professionalism and respect. read more

I'm very disappointed I did not find them sooner. I was struggling for months trying to get a family member into long term care and had no guidance of what Medi-Cal covers. The online questionnaire gives them a great understanding of your situation and they expertly guide you through what you can do next. Before I was at the mercy of strangers online who all have very particular situations they deal with so it's hard to say what works for your situation. Like other reviewers, I also reached out to Lisa during the most stressful period of my life, and she and her team provided me the first moment of peace that I've had in over 3 months. I've been through a uniquely challenging situation, as both my parents suffered significant health issues at the same time, resulting in ER visits, nursing homes, home care, and long-term planning x2. I had hit what I thought was a black-hole of hopelessness when I was given Lisa's info. There are so many crazy rules and interpretations of Medi-Cal, and even though I consider myself fairly adept at figuring things out, I knew that trying to navigate Medi-cal alone would result in wasted time (which I don't have - I still work full time and have my own family!) and wasted money (which I definitely don't have!) - not to mention, comprising the quality of care my parents would receive while I try to learn through trial-and-error how to play the Medi-Cal game.
