Sadly, that hope has turned into deep disappointment and frustration. From the beginning, the administration frequently spoke about "partnering with families" and "supporting every child," but our experience revealed these to be nothing more than well-rehearsed talking points. When real concerns arise--particularly when it comes to your child's individual needs--you quickly find that your voice as a parent is dismissed. The Head of School and Principal may smile and nod, but in practice, they act as though they know your child better than you do and are unwilling to make any meaningful changes that could actually help. There is also a serious lack of consistency at this school. Teacher turnover is high, and it's hard for students to build any real stability with constantly changing staff. In fact, most families tend to leave after preschool or first grade, and that speaks volumes about the experience many have here. Rather than address these retention issues, the school seems more focused on maintaining strong ties with families who are heavy donors--families who often seem to get preferential treatment and can pay their way into getting what they want. To make matters worse, the school appears more concerned with building a new gym than fixing the areas that truly need attention. Classrooms, curriculum, and student resources are outdated or lacking, yet fundraising efforts are aggressively geared toward facilities and image. It's hard to watch tuition dollars and donations go toward expansion projects while core needs are neglected. What made this situation even more infuriating was the transition to a new school. Once we left, we realized just how far behind our child was academically. After being assured for years that this school offered a higher standard of education, we were devastated to find out that was far from the truth. It felt like everything we had invested--financially and emotionally--was for nothing. Many and I mean many families when leaving Hillcrest will home school or go to another school and the first thing they say is I should've done it sooner!! This school promotes a beautiful mission on paper, but in practice, it falls far short. Unless you're part of the "inner circle" or a major donor, true partnership and support are unlikely.

I will say, however, that Viewpoint is as close to "perfect" as a school could be. It is 6 stars in my book. I can't say enough about how the school is run, the individualized care, the facilities, the programs, curriculum. My son started in 7th grade and he is now is 11th and I literally have a smile on my face when I picture him being at Viewpoint. Easily, what stands out the most is the fact everyone in the faculty and administration seem to know my kid, personally...they are invested in all the kids..they aren't anonymous...my son feels like he is in a family type environment where people truly care about his welfare inside and outside of the classroom. That is a very rare characteristic for a school. I can't think on one single aspect of my son's education, from academics to administration, to sports, etc., that have not been handled with the highest level of care and professionalism. And, he has built a tremendous friend base at Viewpoint...definitely his second family. If Atticus Finch were to teach at a school...he just might pick Viewpoint. I will look back on Viewpoint and say it was perhaps the best money I have ever spent...and easily one of the proudest contributions that I have made to my son's young life. For the parent of a child with special needs, this facility is to be avoided at all costs and for those lucky parents of mainstream children: beware. There is no one watching over your student. Blake, my son's case coordinator, conducts himself like a pre-adolescent Neanderthal on muscle relaxants. He is incompetent, unresponsive, unprofessional and lazy. He has no knowledge of special education beyond that of a first year psych under-grad and he is proud to announce in meetings that he is unavailable the day after Halloween because he is planning on partying too much. Often, when his responses are actually intelligible, he is typically saying something along the extremely erudite lines of, "I don't know what you want me to do about it." Drug and alcohol abuse run rampant on campus and students walk off campus as they please despite not having passes. Administrators are distant and uninvolved and do not seem to mind having unprofessional individuals under their employ, who do irreparable damage without sanction or consequence. Parents, look elsewhere and do so quickly. Do not let the pretty buildings fool you.

There is a serious problem with the gate that stays open by the track. i see kids coming in and out whenever they please: During second period, right after first period or whenever! They just walk out in groups. And no one says anything. Not the PE teachers who are teaching their classes nor the maintenance or whatever. They get into the car and literally speed off and some come back later. Some are actually staying in their cars (doing who knows what...very suspicious behavior). As i said earlier this is really common in high school (so just because I am saying this does not mean that you should be worried, it's virtually everywhere), but I think what Im trying to say is that the school does not care if your child stays. My child has been punched and I've been called and told that it's no problem and that the student that hit my child is actually in more pain because of the way they hit my child or that my should have not been near the situation so he wouldn't have gotten hit. Since when is a victim the aggressor? Seems wise to teach this. Recently, my child was choked in class and when the teacher was informed of the situation, nothing was done. This is the constant theme at Woodlake. If you care for your child's safety, it's best to take them to a school that will prioritize providing them a safe learning environment.

My 8-year-old nephew has experienced repeated physical bullying on campus, including being slapped and pushed, primarily during lunch and after-school/dismissal. Our family has reported these incidents and asked for meaningful intervention, but we have not seen effective action to stop the behavior, hold the offenders accountable, or prevent it from continuing. A school should be a place where children feel safe and protected, especially during unstructured times like lunch and dismissal when supervision matters most. Right now, we do not feel the school is taking the necessary steps to ensure a safe environment. We are asking Woodlake to implement clear, consistent measures immediately--stronger supervision in the areas where incidents are happening, a written safety plan for affected students, and prompt follow-through when physical aggression occurs. No child should have to worry about being hurt at school.

Lockurst is the best elementary school we could have dreamed up for our children!!! We moved to…read morethis area for the schools years ago, and Lockhurst has exceeded our expectations in every way! We're able to be involved in the school and both kids' classrooms, and the community has been and continues to be incredibly welcoming. Just a fun group all around! The teachers, staff and principal make this school what it is and we feel very lucky that our littles and ourselves are part of this special place. The PTO works hard to make the family and student experience as fun as it can be throughout the year and lots of families are very dedicated to keeping it amazing. The kids are thriving academically and socially and adore their classmates and teachers. Thanks to everyone at Lockhurst that makes this school what it is!

I was approved the end of 2017 for the inter district transfer so my daughter could continue at Red oak elementary. For 3rd grade my daughter was given Ms Bird as her teacher. Ms bird complained about the problems she had with my daughter in class frequently and it always seemed to be negative and not positive. She recommended my daughter be evaluated for the IEP Program. We had a huge meeting with the special education committee , principal , counselor and her teacher Ms Bird. We all agreed to put her in the IEP program to assist with her learning. One of the topics that came up during that meeting was that my daughter had a hard time transitioning into a new school because we moved from Santa Clarita originally. For the 2018 school year I had to reapply for the inter-district transfer since we had to move to Thousand Oaks. OPUSD denied my daughters transfer into Red oak. My daughter was devastated. We were all sad because she loved red oak and made friends there. They told me there program was impacted. They didn't try to even accommodate my daughter even after putting us through the IEP process. To me I feel like they didn't want to take her back because of the trouble she may of had with Ms Bird or because she became an IEP student they didn't want that at there school? I filed for a appeal and the most OPUSD offered us was for her to go to the school across the street in Oak Park. Why would I put my daughter in a new school with OPUSD when I can just put her in a new school completely in Thousand Oaks. The whole point was to keep her at red oak and they didn't seem to care about my daughters needs, and feelings. I wouldn't recommend this school after what they did to my daughter.

I have two children one tested in the top 5% of Ca schools one did not .My lower performing child…read morewas excluded along with other children from taking the standardized test .This happened years ago while the school was trying to win an award .We were told it was legal to exclude 5% of the test takers. It just so happened that the kids who were known to perform poorly were the ones that were excluded. The other schools in the district were not doing this so they ended up looking like they were not doing as well when it was really just a shell game . We were told "listen your property values went up ,so you gained too" Boosting property values is not a good enough reason to do what they did. I will always be upset and they will always have shame to live with.
