The Good -- The PTA. It's improved. A lot. It's now run by a responsible group that is really committed to raising funds and implementing quality programs for the kids. The Mediocre -- The parents. With the exception of a few, the parent involvement is pretty lame. Same group of parents that volunteer at every event. The BAD -- The Principal. One of the worst I've ever seen. She attempts to run the school like a military base. She has her sights set on climbing the LAUSD ladder and, clearly, every decision she makes is geared toward furthering her personal goals as opposed to creating a nurturing, fun, inspiring environment for the kids. And this isn't just my opinion. Every teacher, parent and student hates her.

He talks about the science program all the time, and he's been so excited about the enrichment opportunities the school offers. It's been really special to watch him feel engaged and supported in that way. From a parent perspective, it's honestly been eye-opening. Coming from private school, where everything carried an extra cost... tutoring, after-school care, lunches... it feels completely different here. Hot lunches are included. After-school care is available at no cost. If a child needs extra support, tutoring is offered without an added fee. It's just incredible to see how many resources are available, and how much support is built in, simply for being part of the school community.

What makes this a one-star school is the principal's anger issues and sense of power over others. He treats the boys unfairly and is over-protective of the girls. The toxic environment that he creates completely over-shadows the location and good staff and is most evident in grades 9-12, but he also loses his temper with the boys in grades 6-8. His discipline is guilt and power-driven and students don't feel comfortable sharing this with their parents because he is seen as a wise sage. He puts on a good act for the parents but can be very manipulative behind the shiny veneer. In addition, his belief in pseudo-scientific principles chips away at the integrity of the school's academic component. The school supports the notion that plants are sentient beings. He minimized the dangers of Covid during the pandemic in order to keep the school open so he wouldn't lose clients (families and students.) He cherry-picked outlier studies from questionable scientists to support the false notion that Covid wasn't as easily transmittable as it actually was. You have to drink the proverbial Kool Aid here or you'll be cast out. At times, staff and even students were asked to leave the school because their believe system didn't align with his. He once fired a secretary right after an initiation ceremony on a staff retreat because he didn't think she "fit in." Shouldn't that have been decided during the interview process? As a parent, I simply can't recommend this school. Maybe after he retires and turns the school over to new leadership... It has so much potential.

From our first visit to campus she made us feel welcome and comfortable. I was so impressed that she knew every student and parent walking around as we visited. To this day, she still knows everyone who passes through the gates of WHPS Collins. She is always available for questions, to discuss any concerns, is an incredible support for the teachers and is actively engaged with the school's programs and students' development. We first had Ms. Monica and Ms. Zulay and now have Ms. Kathy and Ms. Candy as teachers. They are INCREDIBLE. The teachers tailor their teaching styles and content to the students in their class and their interests. My daughter is an observer and the teachers have helped push her a bit outside of her comfort zone and she has grown so much over the past two years. There are a ton of extracurricular activities that families can opt into. We've done dance, Spanish, tiny stem, soccer, and tennis. We've also done the summer camp at WHPS. It is a bit of an extension of the school year but with lots of fun water experiences. There is a pool with a lifeguard and available swim lessons. The Parent Association Group (PAG) is highly involved. So many fun experiences like a Halloween parade and Snow Day as well as cultural celebrations like Lunar New Year and Holi. Also, the school is incredibly safe. Double entrance doors which is right in front of the director's office. Codes and sign-ins required by all. Great relationships with LAFD and LAPD who respond quickly if there were to be any concerns. Also, they do a number of drills that are age appropriate for the students. I know it can be scary to discuss drills at such a young age, but it is necessary. With so many preschool opportunities in the west Valley, we were in a bit of a decision paralysis until we got to WHPS Collins. It was an easy choice and we are so glad our daughter has had such a great experience.

We fell in love the moment we took the the tour, as the campus, classrooms and administrative staff were all so wonderful. Her teachers were warm, patient, and truly cared about each child. She'd come home chattering about new friends, singing songs, and showing off "tattoos" or her new artwork. The classrooms are so vibrant, the outdoor playgrounds are well stocked and in great condition. The Parent Association is fantastic, and the school presents things like Snow Day, Halloween parades, and fun field trips to places like the LA Zoo and Underwood Farms. Families are welcomed at special events, making it feel like a true community. She absolutely thrived here, and if we hadn't moved, we'd still be part of this wonderful school. Thank you to Ms. Bri, Ms. Ale, Ms. Robin and Ms. Ailin!

Ms. Dinooshi was the one who showed me around, and she was very nice and understanding. Ms. Nee is always present and available to handle any issues that arise (none major, mostly coordination issues). What is noteworthy is that the kids always seem happy to go there and frankly, I know they will be taken care of very well. The teachers and staff are very vigilant about safety and always let me know when something happens (usually minor, thank goodness, like cuts or scrapes). Another cool thing is that they have music, art, Mandarin and a soccer class (I'm sure amongst others I do not know about), which is good for overall development. Overall, I cannot say enough good things about Montessori of Calabasas and would recommend them to anyone without hesitation!
