Since then, I've had that design in my back pocket so that I can recreate that same professional-looking piece (or closed to it) myself for our new home. Now that I have a foyer, I want to showcase our entrance by adding a major centerpiece. I couldn't find those same winter florals at other flower shops- so in comes Colonial Flower S. at the New Paltz Plaza in New Paltz who met me all the way while thinking outside the box. Whether it's cheery+frilly or minimalist, Colonial says it all with flowers and greenery. At the main entrance, you'll find those glass refrigerated coolers; then the shop's backroom is bursting with blooms as the folks work and create arrangements on long table. I'd shown Melissa the arrangement snapshot of what was created for me and although Colonial didn't carry those specific stems I wanted, she IMMEDIATELY thought of plan B and made things so much easier! Price was right and Melissa's fast-thinking, creative skills were on point the entire time. Thank you so much!

Unable to find an alternative, I returned to the shop to find something to take back to our hotel room. I was offered a cheese plate and gratefully accepted. When I came up to pay, I realized that it was on a metal tray. I apologized and told him I needed it to go. "That would have been great to know before" the proprietor said coldly. He said let me ring these people out and I'll put it in a bag. Having already paid, I stood there feeling wretched, looked at the young couple at the register and said "lunch is on me" gave them the tray, and left the shop in tears. I was grieving the loss of a loved one two days ago, and all I needed was courtesy . It was in short supply there.

Mikes…read moreHot House is a Well-run, locally family owned and operated garden supply business with a few greenhouses, offering healthy annual & perennial plants (both edible and ornamental) such as shrubs, trees, herbs and other container/garden plants. They had a wide variety of HOT peppers, which really piques my interest ! I find their prices to be competitive or even reasonable. The owners are always very helpful and friendly. I've found some annuals here that I've never been able to find at most other local suppliers, especially the "big box" stores -- there's just no comparison in the varieties offered. They close mid-summer due to (I'm assuming) almost a full sell out of their plant stock. They run a good business and their plants sell well. Last year, I did have a couple of annual ornamental plants fail to thrive and eventually die just a couple of months after I purchased them and promptly transferred them to my hanging baskets. I'm an experienced gardner and homeowner for many years. I do generally know what I'm doing with proper plant nurturing and maintenance. However, when I addressed this with the female owner, she just shrugged her shoulders and said "oh yes.... those tend to be very finicky and difficult to maintain." At the time that I mentioned the failed plants, I was at the register making another sizable purchase. It would have been nice if she had just knocked a few buck off of my total purchase, but she made no such offer. Oh well..... I still like the place enough to continue to patronize Mike's Hot House.
