I was passing Sydney Cellars on my way to such an occasion and it is a definite contender for the world's second-greatest bottle shop. For a relatively small shop they have a decent wine collection and great specials that don't involve six- or twelve- bottle purchases. I got two $15 bottles for $20 in their special of the week, and yae, I was happy.

If you're of more refined tastes (and have a healthy bank balance to match), Camperdown Cellars also offers a selection of rare and aged wines - not the sort of thing you'd take to the local Thai restaurant. It also offers a good selection of foreign beers - which pleases me, as I'm able to buy some of my favourite English ales (yes, the ones that are usually served room temperature!), although they are a little more pricey than in the off-licenses of London, but they do have to fly here I suppose. Oh, and if you're into your spirits, there's plenty of choices on offer in that department too. N.B. Keep an eye on the website for tasting opportunities, aka FREE BOOZE! P.S. Drink responsibly...

Located in the heart of Sydney, RNV Cellars is my source for the finest wines and local beers. They have a wide variety of wines in stock such as the De Stefani Soler (smooth and balanced with just a bit of a cherry and licorice taste, heavenly!) and the more high end, award-winning Howard Park Abercrombie Cabernet Sauvignon. The beauty of it all is that since they're pretty near a lot of restaurants, you can buy your wine here before going to one that allows BYO. You get to save money and drink the wine you want. Next time you're in the mood for a glass of bubbly or a nice bottle of wine, try visiting RNV Cellars. I highly recommend it!

Conveniently positioned right across the road from my house, Vintage Cellars in Rushcutters Bay…read moreoffers a fine choice of alcoholic libations! Its only competition in the direct vicinity comes from the bottle shop at Key Largo, so it wins that battle rather convincingly! Only problem being that it's located across the busy Bayswater Road, so I've almost been run down a few times crossing that, when I should really just walk to the traffic lights and wait a few seconds. Oh well. They have the usual stock of beers, and some foreign imports, charged at appropriately imported prices, and they do have numerous ciders, which gets a tick in my book! Their wine selection is particularly good though, depsite it's relatively small size. They seem to cram plenty of bottles in! And don't be fooled by the cheapness of the clean skin wines, they're actually surprisingly good! Wow, I sound cheap! But that's the truth, they're not good in glass bottles, put it that way. The staff are friendly and will usually help you out if you're having trouble deciding what you're in need of, and they sometimes hold in-store wine tastings. Yay, free wine! They even have a car park around the side, so if you're driving past, you don't have to try negotiating a parallel park while cars whizz by you at 70kmh!

And the staff aren't just pretty faces . . . there is some serious knowledge ticking about this place. Oh, and even better? The Oak Barrel is fully independent, in fact it's one of Sydney's oldest independent bottle-o's. No big soulless chains here, fellow drinkers. They are so, so rude and abrupt and they don't really care, 'case they still have the customers, as no one imports/stocks wine from my home country :( When Anthony (Tony) told me no one was buying the wine I often purchased, I soon found out WHY, when I got a case of 4-5 corked wine bottles and was told to get stuffed and hand up phone on me...
