I paid myself a visit recently and I'm so glad I did. It's more than just a hill with a good photo-op of the city skyline. Right next to the hill, there's a nice cafe (Rooster Coffee) where you can pick up one of my personal favourite spots to grab green tea/tea latte. If you want to throw yourself a little picnic East Chinatown is nearby for some cheap eats. Isn't this the perfect date spot to hang out during a sunset in warm weather? In winter, this is a prime spot for tobogganing. If you go down the hill, there's a playground where I see talented people busting out gymnastic moves as they use it to work out. You can do a discovery and nature walk down the Don River Trail. Now if you give yourself more time, you also explore out West to Riverdale Farm and Cemetery.

This is one of the less expensive tennis clubs in Toronto and a great place to play if you're just starting out. Membership comes with 5 free group lessons and the option to join their league which matches you with players of similar skill level and gender. The dress code is relaxed. The guy that runs it is friendly as can be and always around to check on things and make sure everything is running smoothly. There is a 45 minute max for playing if there are people waiting so you can show up whenever and never have to worry about waiting too long for one of the 4 courts. The courts are not in perfect condition but certainly good enough for the average player. The hours are a bit restricted if, and only if, you don't have a day job since they share the courts with the school. For the rest of us, you won't even notice the lack of week day hours. These are the hours: Weekdays - 6 PM to 10:30 PM Saturday/Holidays - 9 AM to 10:30 PM Sunday - 9 AM to 6:00 PM The courts are also open to the public on Sundays from 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM or as a member you can bring a guest anytime for just $5.

Since it was a birthday party, I don't know what it costs to rent out all of the ice (or the sheets, as they call it), but if drinking and throwing stones down ice sounds like your kind of thing, I'm certain it's worth it. The bar was a bit pricier than I was anticipating. I was picturing more like a legion-style situation, with twoonie beers and no mix, but they actually have a proper wooden bar that takes debit and serves up $20 pitchers. Not as fun as what I was picturing, but fair enough, it is in beautiful High Park after all. Sweep!

The staff here gives an exhaustive explanation of the rules and makes it easy for novices to pick up the game. Great game, better company, made for a pretty amazing three hours on a Friday afternoon. We had unfettered access to the entire rink, which made for an exclusive experience. Solid beer selection behind the bar certainly doesn't hurt. Can't wait until next year's Malanka Curling Cup in January!

She also throws a big Christmas party there every year. I must say, having had zero idea what to expect, what a beautiful spot. And I can see why she loves going there for tennis, as well. For a party location, I imagine it's not cheap to rent, but it is brilliant because the children are free to roam around and toss tennis balls at one another and go bananas on the court, which is excellent for their parents who don't want to have to entertain them. Meanwhile, the older kids (meaning the adults) get to mingle and get a lil tipsy upstairs in the swanky restaurant, bar, mingling area and overlook their kiddos playing through the enormous glass window/walls. There is a restaurant area, as well as a bar area, where I played bartender for the night. There was no sink which was difficult, but it was still fun. Perhaps I am biased because I've never been allowed to play bartender at people's parties so this was a first and I loved it, but regardless, I can also see why big sis likes this joint as a tennis player. After sweating your addidas-clad buns off, you can meander upstairs with your fancy pals and have drinks RIGHT THERE without having to get your coat on and go out and find another place. All the while feeling quite lahdeehdah with a big framed picture of her majesty elizabeth hanging above a fireplace when she was still young and pretty to look at, staring at you as you schmooze with fellow club-mates. Best of all it's literally 2 blocks from our house. I enjoyed it as a party venue, especially for the children, and I can imagine, if one can afford the insane membership cost, enjoying it immensely as a member, as well.

From the outside it looks sort of like an apartment complex, or even a cult house!! No, I'm serious!! I didn't really know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. They have everything here, tennis courts, squash, pool, even a cafeteria and outdoor sitting area. It almost feels like a resort. I was here to watch a tennis tournament, it was the big tournament of the club. There were a lot of people, and not too many seats, that would be the only complaint. The food looked extremely delish, standard grill type food. Chicken fingers, fries, sandwiches... Nothing too special. If you're thinking of crashing this place, all you have to do is get past the security doors into the place. Wearing all white might help make you look like you are part of the club, as all players have to completely be decked out in white. There's a kids club downstairs, I didn't check it out but i think there's arts and crafts and other fun activities to keep your kids at bay. Relaxing atmosphere, a great place to spend the day. I don't play Badminton, Racquetball or Tennis so it's clear that I'm not a member, but we came here for our work christmas dinner. The Club itself is fairly large, given that its smack dab in the middle of the city. However, as we went through a tour of the facilities and the building itself, its very clear that the building is old and disjointed and lacks proper flow from one area to another. The courts seemed to be in quite good condition though and you could tell this was an upscale type of club. The area where we had our lunch was quite nicely refinished and looked very crisp. We were seated in a room with a large round table for lunch. There was a set Christmas menu with choice for the main: squash and apple soup, a choice of Turkey Dinner, Salmon or Vegetarian and Christmas "pudding" for dessert. The food was quite good, I very much enjoyed the soup, a nice hearty appetizer for a cold day. The Turkey dinner was great, stuffing, vegetables, turkey, cranberry sauce and potatoes. The Christmas "pudding" was a bit odd, more like a cake with a small scoop of ice cream, but still good. Overall, it was a good experience for a staff luncheon but I dont' think I would recommend this venue for anything other than a relatively casual lunch (provided you know someone who's a member) as the facilities just don't seem to be able to handle much beyond that.

It seems to me that they are going for a "classic" look, but the result is more of a "dated" look - it reminds me a lot of the Faculty Club at the University of Toronto - in fact I wouldn't be surprised if these clubs were somehow linked. In terms of food, they do make a mean cheese platter - at their finger sandwiches are definitely tasty. Also, the bartenders are heavy handed on the alcohol - which may have not been the most appropriate at the event I was attending - but you know. The bartenders themselves were quite friendly and one in particular makes quite a delicious caesar! The only part of the club that does not need an update, in my opinion, are the washrooms. I am a sucker for venue-branded one time use towels (I know, I'm a tree killer) and soaps and lotions, apparently. Overall as a venue, this place is ok, but nothing special. In a city of hundreds on venues, you could definitely do a lot better (but also a lot worse) than the Badminton & Racquet Club.
