When you walk into Fred's you will likely see local farmers and townspeople hanging out while casually shopping for supplies. Not to mention emptying the old to then fill the new. Appliance shopping is exhausting! While I wanted to shop more local than Home Depot. My kitchen had other thoughts. It had to be single door, had to be a certain size... and the only feature that was a MUST was a water dispenser. (Which with a single door fridge is hard to find.) Alas, Home Depot had it. The stainless steel fridge of my dreams... errr... or rather my kitchen's dreams. Popped online. Snagged it in my cart. Scheduled the first possible day they could deliver. (A week later.) Added that they would be taking my old hunk of junk fridge away with them. (An additional $25.) Added that they would be needing to get the water hooked up to the fridge.-- cause nobody's got time for that. (An additional $25.) Popped in my credit card info. Painless. Then the day before the delivery, I got a text telling me a window of when it would be delivered. (2-6pm. Which, let me point out that is about eight hours less of a timeframe then what my local cable company gives me when my internet is acting up.) I got email updates as they approached. I got a call when they were one stop away. Two fellas in masks came during the 2-6pm window. They had to take my front door off to get the fridge in, but man-- they were speedy! They gave me tips on cleaning it. Told me how to get the water and ice going. Put my front door back on. Took my old fridge away. BOOM. In and out in about 20 minutes. This was a painless adulting excursion, thanks Home Depot!

You can also park right outside the doors in case you're loading up something really heavy, so that's a plus-side to the parking. Free parking on Main Street in Oelwein - in case you're unaware. The store itself is pretty awesome. It's not a huge space, so everything is relatively packed together, but it pretty much meets all of the needs that I've ever had. I have no idea how to navigate the store, but if I put effort into it, there are signs and everything, and it's laid-out in a semi-logical way that makes it easy to get around. Every time I've gone in, I've been asked by multiple people if I need any assistance, so they're really quite great about helping you get exactly what you need. While I'm not sure I'd agree that their slogan, "Ace, The Helpful Place" would apply to all Ace Hardware stores, in this case, it actually does. I've come in here with really vague problems or ideas, and they've helped me figure out what I need to get. For this last time, I was looking for an inexpensive way to get cardboard signs into the ground. I haven't been able to find any super-cheap stakes or other metal frames throughout all of Oelwein, so I thought I'd come here. Ace Hardware didn't actually have any type of cheap stake, but they were willing to help me find a better solution that worked for me. They brought me towards metal flag poles that ran less than 50 cents a piece. I bought a ton (they had a huge stock!) to work with, and I have exactly what I need to make my signs. Check-out was super simple and everyone was really friendly. When I need things for my lawn in the future, I'll definitely be back. I wish they had larger stock of things, but it's always had what I needed - or employees were willing to work with me to find an alternative that works just as well or better.

I live in Bettendorf, but am in Iowa City frequently as my wife and I have 3 daughters living there. Two daughters live very close to this hardware store and I was string-trimming at one of their houses, and I flung a rock into my car's driver side window and it shattered. I needed to drive the home on I80 but wanted some clear plastic on the window if possible. Emily gave me some used plastic from some inventory they had unloaded, and I bought some duct tape. As I went to the car I realized I would need scissors and told her I might be back if I can't get hold of the other daughter and her husband who live close. Daughter didn't answer so as I was about to call a different daughter and her husband Emily appeared and volunteered to help. She was very patient and had some great ideas like where we applied the tape to keep it off the paint. It was a loud ride home but I made it safely and Emily's great work held! This morning I got the window replaced and will not need to borrow or rent a car to drive to Chicago for a ballgame tomorrow. I probably could have made it home fine with no plastic, but it was nice to have, and I wasn't sure how long until I could get the window replaced nor how soon it was supposed to rain. I always say the world needs more kindness, and thank you to Emily for her great customer service from a business perspective, and for what I consider just simple kindness - another KO (Kindness Opportunity) fulfilled. I brought it in and Ryan was supposed to do it because he was the "window guy". After two weeks, I went to go pick up the window because Ryan said it was ready, but not to come in until the following day so the glazing could set. I did as I was told and showed up the next day to find the glazing not even completely covering the area and Ryan off for the next five days. When I looked at the caulk replacement, some of it was only HALF of the strip needed. When I went to go pay, the cashier could tell I was not happy. She offered very politely to call the manager. Rich came down and asked if I would like Ryan to redo it because this is not normally his quality. I said, "Yes". I went back five days later and Ryan tried to blame me for his poor quality work. I told him, "No. Even Rich agreed with me that your quality was poor." Then when I went to go pay for it, they tried to charge me an additional $10! I said it was $55 last week. The cashier said, "oh sorry, sorry!" and brought the price back down instantly. The store is neat. The people are generally helpful when they're not trying to push something more expensive on you, but that's another story.
