Ken Palmer, and his girlfriend and co-worker, Courtney Tessler, misrepresented themselves, their…read moreknowledge, and the company. They performed far below subpar work, stole materials, failed to achieve permits, used non-English speaking laborers, and provided them with no supervision. I gave him a sizable deposit on our cost-plus project. He was non-communicative and, even upon termination, never contacted us in any attempt to amend issues. Nor did he submit any receipts breaching the most basic agreement of the contract. The list of code violations composed by a licensed engineer, RLC Engineering, is over five pages long. A few examples follow. He did not obtain a permit before beginning and failed to bring a dumpster or portable toilet on site until the third week of the project. Even though I attained a self-permit from Anderson County, he was legally required to obtain his own permit as the GC. His workers urinated all over the side of our home and threw their garbage around our property. When we confronted him, he told us he can't control his workers. Isn't that part of his job as a GC? To manage his workers? Also, we had pressure treated wood and OBS board on-site purchased for exterior work we were doing ourselves. He used it. When we confronted him, he said he would replace it, which he never did. We had to buy it twice after paying him for the wood he was supposed to have purchased for the interior work. Spectrum plumbed the bathrooms without installing toilet waste connections. The plumbing was also installed on a negative slope so that water and waste roll back towards the sinks, showers, and toilets. The pex was installed through splintered holes with no room for movement. So over time, the pex would have sliced opened and flooded into our walls. A warning: Ken Palmer got this mess approved by the inspector somehow. This is baffling to us since there are no drains for the sewage, and the vents are not aligned over sinks, among many other problems. There are literally pages of code violations. He miscut and omitted openings in the concrete masonry units that were supposed to be removed to make way for windows. Instead, he created rough cuts in the cement to the wrong size, then framed over them without removing the brick. This is hard to understand without seeing it, but it ridiculously expensive to amend and incredibly negligent. He promised all joints and holes would be filled in before painting our cement ceiling -- but instead, he sprayed it without prepping it. It has been less than six months, and the paint is already peeling off. The floor joists do not fit together. The carpenter did not use a saw with an angle -- when I told Ken I would not approve the work, he glued Advantech on top of it to not see it anymore. As though because he put it out of sight, we won't know how poorly our framing is put together. The floor is rocky and unstable. The plumbers were skinny men, and their modest walks over the floors made the joists collapse. When I told Ken of this issue, his response to me is "A shim is carpenter's best friend." Meaning, they'll prop it up. That may be, but he used stacks of metal pipe hangers as his shims. They spilled out -- sliding like stacks of slick cards from under our floor. The list goes on. This man does not understand construction. He is charming and talks a good game but does not communicate, execute with any acceptable level of quality, does not know plumbing or framing, does not provide documentation, and does not supply his workers' supervision. Additionally, he does not fill out paperwork, obtain permits, or promptly adhere to basic site needs like run-off fencing, dumpsters, and portable toilets. Every time and I mean every time we confronted him, his response would be, "This is how I do it in million-dollar houses." He is building homes on Lake Keowee. If you have hired Spectrum Builders for your million dollar home, please be aware of what is under the glued down Advantech and behind the sheetrock. Because you can't see your plumbing, framing, and electrical work, it does not mean its quality and adherence to the manufacturer's guidelines are not vital to every home's longevity and safety.

This guy is everything you have ever heard of in a bad contractor all wrapped up in one. Over-promising and under-delivering, coupled with zero communication, inability to follow instructions, poor quality workmanship (that violates county codes), and subcontractors that don't speak English and are given no work instructions. Further compounded by his lies and arrogance makes this an extremely disappointing company to do business with. Please don't bring problems to his attention. He wishes "to be judged at the end of the build and not before." Please give this man time to hide or bury the mistakes you will be left with long after he vacates your project. My advice is to steer clear of Spectrum Builders, Ken Palmer, James Palmer, J.K Palmer d.b.a Spectrum builders, or whatever alias he is currently using (as there are many..... ) Do your research. ignore the BBB rating, but read the complaints. Look up his bond status....

Ecos Paints - cracked semi gloss ECOS paint on window frame

    Ecos Paints

I was interested in the "healthiest" paint option for redoing the interior of my entire home and…read moreafter extensive research went with ECOS Paint (owned by Imperial Paints, based out of South Carolina but which does most of its business online). I also went with a very highly regarded painting company in my city to do the job. The painters I hired advised me against using ECOS and suggested several more established alternatives, but I ignored their advise. After all, I thought, it's just paint - how complicated could it be? My basic error was that instead of relying on the advice of real life experienced painters I thought I could Google and chatGPT my way to expertise. What I got in exchange for my hubris was a very painful lesson about the Dunning Krueger effect. This ended up being one of the most costly home renovation mistakes I've ever made. Everything started as expected on the first day. The painters prepped the dry wall surfaces and were careful with application, but after drying overnight it was clear something had gone wrong (see submitted pics). ECOS Paint's products cracked regardless of which product was used (primer, top coat, finishing, etc) or which kind of surface was painted. This persisted even after trying a second coating. My painters were horrified, and the owner of the painting company himself joined me to call up ECOS on a three way conversation to discuss what had happened. It took a few days to get them on the phone, and in the interim we repainted the surface with a standard Sherwin Williams base and coating and there were no issues with cracking, either immediately or in the long run (see side by side image of ECOS on right and Sherwin WIlliams on left on the same wall). We did similar comparisons with all of the paint lines and had the same result each time. ECOS came out as cracked garbage and Sherwin was smooth and flawless. When we finally could get ECOS on the phone, we spoke with two individuals at their company -- a British fellow by the name of Julian and his colleague. They were extremely insulting, first calling me a liar and scam artist attempting to extort money from them and calling my painting company incompetent and insulting their workers. Truly bizarre conversation considering what happened. At one point I literally had to say "Listen, you may be upset about the performance of your paint but please keep it professional. There's no need for personal insults." The Sherwin Williams (applied by the same painters on the same surfaces) had no issues. Just basic process of elimination suggests it was their paint that was the problem, not the painters themselves. We left the conversation without any resolution and I ultimately had to contact a lawyer and threaten to take them to small claims court to recompense even the cost of the paint itself. I was so mad after all the insults that I was willing to fly out to Spartanburg and face them down in front of a judge. They eventually begrudgingly gave me a refund after they received my notice of intent to sue, but the thousands of dollars to redo the paint job (ie. labor) came out of my own pocket. Not to mention the incredible stress and loss of peace of mind of the entire experience. It's unfortunate that this Yelp page is hidden in Spartanburg for a company that has screwed so many people across the country, but hopefully it comes up when their name is searched. In any case -- don't be an idiot like me. Trust the experts. Not some fly by night online company that just knows how to put up a website. Even though some time has passed since all of this went down, it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth when I think about it.
